Good morning. It’s Friday, December 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The completion of the college football season handed CBS Sports with its best numbers ever for its SEC on CBS package. Coverage in 2013 averaged a 4.5/10, according to Nielsen, marking the highest average rating for a full season of SEC football on CBS since the network launched an SEC-only schedule in 2001. The package finished up 15% over last year, to rank as the highest-rated regular-season college football package on any network for the fifth consecutive season. At the top of the heap were Auburn over Missouri and Alabama besting Texas A&M, with both delivering an 8.6.
The NFL released plans for the first-ever Pro Bowl Draft, which is slated to be nationally televised during a live three-hour primetime broadcast on NFL Network on Wednesday, January 22 at 8p. The event will take place on January 21-22 in Kapolei, HI where all 88 Pro Bowl players are expected to be in attendance for Wednesday’s live show. On Tuesday, January 21, 22 players (11 per team) will be drafted from certain position while the remaining players will be drafted on Wednesday during NFL Network’s live broadcast. Players selected on Tuesday will kick off Wednesday night’s live primetime Draft show by walking the red carpet. Fans will be able to follow every pick at www.NFL.com/probowl.
Speaking of new approaches, the UFC is expanding its ties to women’s MMA with the launch of a second weight class for female fighters. The promotion is adding a 115-pound strawweight division after acquiring the contracts of 11 fighters from Invicta FC, according to UFC President Dana White. The weight class will compete next year on The Ultimate Fighter on FOX Sports 1, with the winner of the competition, slated for May, being crowned the UFC’s first strawweight champ.
NBC Sports Group will is slated to offer more than 32 hours of coverage of the Dew Tour Ion Mountain Championships this week, including four hours of live television coverage on NBC and NBCSN, as well as 32 hours of digital coverage live streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra and DewTour.com. The event will serve as the first official USSA selection event of the 2013-2014 season as well as the first ever USSA selection event for freeski and slopestyle disciplines. TV coverage starts Saturday at noon on NBC, and continues through the weekend on NBC and NBCSN. Veteran play-by-play announcer Todd Harris will lead coverage.
CBS Sports carried the 114th meeting of the Army/Navy football classic on Saturday at 3p. CBS Sports Network offers pre-game coverage of Army/Navy from noon to 2:30p, starting with a special telecast featuring the traditional “March On” procession when the Brigade of Midshipmen and Corps of Cadets make their entrance. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson call the action.
Pac-12 Networks are getting ready to celebrate the 100th Rose Bowl Game carrying several classic games and special programming celebrating the milestone. On Saturday, December 21 at 10p, Pac-12 Networks presents Road to the Rose Bowl, a 30-minute special celebrating the 100th game matchup and hosted by Mike Yam – that will look back on the 2013 season for Michigan State and Stanford. The program will also take a historical look back at some of the top moments, teams and all-time records from the previous 99 games.
Tennis Channel will revisit the epic, five-set French Open semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, dubbed to be the match of the year, on Friday, Dec. 13, at 8p and again on Saturday, Dec. 14, at noon. The match originally aired live on Tennis Channel Friday, June 7. In addition, on Saturday, Dec. 14, Tennis Channel will re-air Serena Williams’ 2013 French Open singles final victory over defending-champion Maria Sharapova at 8p.
BTN will air the Women’s Sports Report at 10:30p tonight with host Lisa Byington and analysts Kara Lentz and Michelle McMahon. The program will cover a tournament record seven Big Ten teams appearing in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament round of sixteen and offer highlights and post-match reactions.
Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel wraps up its 19th season with a special roundtable review of 2013 when the show’s 201st edition debuts on Tuesday at 10p on HBO. Host Bryant Gumbel leads correspondents Mary Carillo, Frank Deford, Jon Frankel, Bernard Goldberg, Andrea Kremer and Soledad O’Brien in a discussion of 2013, “touching on everything from favorite stories of the year to the interviews and segments that had the greatest impact on them.”

Hyundai gave details for its annual Super Bowl commercial, with a seventh straight appearance on the broadcast. The car brand will deliver two 30-second spots that will air in the first and fourth quarters, according to Bloomberg, that will promote the redesigned Genesis luxury sedan and a modified Elantra small car.
