IN THE NEWS

President-elect Donald Trump will keep his executive producer title on The New Celebrity Apprentice, premiering January 2 on NBC and now hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Faced with possible conflict of interest concerns, former Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN on Friday, “Presidents have a right to do things in their spare time.” Trump himself went a step further on Saturday, tweeting, “Will devote ZERO TIME!”, followed by a tweet labeling CNN’s “ridiculous & untrue – FAKE NEWS!”

In related news, the future POTUS’s earned media for the month of November was $752.6 million, up from $568.5 million in October, according to mediaQuant. Since the presidential campaigns began in July 2015, Trump has racked up $6.4 billion in earned media, versus $3.7 billion for Hillary Clinton.

UK’s Sky has agreed to 21st Century Fox’s offer price of $15 billion, adding “certain material offer terms remain under discussion and there can be no certainty an offer will be made.” Fox said it would announce a decision one way or another by January 6. Rupert Murdoch tried to buy Sky, which he’d created then lost control of, in 2010, but plans were scratched in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal.

Metadata vendor Gracenote is being sold to Nielsen for upwards of $500 million, reports Variety. What reportedly draws Nielsen to the company is Gracenote’s automatic content recognition technology, allowing Gracennot to match metadata with what’s onscreen. Tribune bought Gracenote from Sony for $170 million in 2013.

Do you think Donald Trump should remain an executive producer on The New Celebrity Apprentice?  Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

LEGAL BRIEFING

The “short, temporary leave of absence” of Gurney Productions founders Scott and Dierdre Gurney ended with their termination last week by owner ITV America. “Following a meeting with Scott and Deirdre Gurney, the Board of Gurney Productions has been left with no alternative but to terminate their employment and file a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California on the grounds of self-dealing, fraudulent concealment and breach of contract,” said a Gurney Productions spokesperson. ITV America alleges after selling a majority interest of their company, the Gurneys secretly formed a new production company, Snake River Productions, “as part of an unlawful plan to misappropriate the Company’s corporate opportunities for themselves and to artificially inflate the Company’s EBITDA,” according to a filing.

A U.S. magistrate judge on Friday recommended that a court order LMNO to hand over footage for season two of TLC series 7 Little Johnstons to Discovery Communications. The supplier held onto the shows since Discovery accused LMNO of deceptive business practices and canceled its contract after paying $2 million for the season. LMNO said the dispute hinges what they claim is a less-than-agreed-on price, not an unwillingness to release the shows, and will file its response and appeal this week.
