NBC is following up its The Sound of Music Live! special (18.6 million viewers) with a live performance of Broadway musical Peter Pan on December 4, announced NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt at the TCA. Sound of Music Live! producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are onboard. Greenblatt also announced another event program: mini-series The Slap, about how a child getting slapped turns into a court case, plus Wizard of Oz reboot Emerald City.
Ellen DeGeneres topped the new Harris Poll list of America’s favorite TV personalities. It was the second year in a row the talk show/upcoming Oscars host was number one, and third time overall. Mark Harmon (NCIS) took second place, followed by Jon Stewart (The Daily Show), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) and Jay Leno (The Tonight Show).
Not everything’s coming up roses for The Bachelor. At an ABC party on Friday night, Juan Pablo Galavis told The TV Page he didn’t think the dating show should feature a gay or bisexual bachelor, explaining that gay people are “more pervert in a sense.” An audio of the interview was later posted online. Saturday, ABC issued a statement saying the comments were “thoughtless and insensitive, and in no way reflect to views of the network, the show’s producers or studio.’ Galavis posted an apology on his Facebook page saying he had misused the word “pervert” because English is his second language. “What I meant to say,” wrote Galavis, “was that gay people are more affectionate and intense and for a segment of the TV audience this would be too racy to accept.’ Galavis also apologized to GLAAD, and announced plans to meet with gay and lesbian families. The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8p.
After his TCA panel last week, CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker said of his plans to freshen the news net, “The key for us is to make sure we remain true to what CNN is. We can’t look for a quick fix and we can’t look for a partisan show. What we’re looking for is smart, intelligent, CNN-branded programming that also has some passion… Things take time and they often happen by accident.”
ABC is cutting short low-performing drama Killer Women. Mind Games, originally scheduled to debut Tuesday, March 11 at 10p, will take its time slot two weeks early, on February 25, elbowing Women – which opened to a .9 A18-49 rating, and earned .7 its second week – off the lineup.
As Aereo prepares for its day in Supreme Court to battle broadcasters who label its service copyright infringement, the streamer-of-over-the-air TV launches in the Cincinnati area. Asked at the TCA on Friday what he thought about Fox‘s decision to ditch pilot season, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee said, “I am a gradualist.” While acknowledging that the net is “moving forward,” Lee said that when he was in the U.K., he was an overseas admirer of a system that produces so much in such a short period of time.
Swimming against the tide, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins wasn’t as enthusiastic as some at the TCA were about limited series. “I think it’s an interesting trend,” Nevins acknowledged Thursday, but “I still think the best thing for us is to get shows that we can really get people in love with then bring them back… I believe fundamentally in renewable resources.”
BET and ICON MANN, championing the accomplishments of Black men, are partnering for a Black History Month initiative that tells one personal story each day of a contemporary trailblazer. 28 Men of Change will air as 2-minute vignettes on BET and Centric; additional content, including interviews and videos, will be offered on BET.com.
A leaner cast will make for a better show, Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek said at the TCA. “We get to focus a little bit more on our existing characters because we’ve scaled back a little,” explained Kapnek of dealing with the departures of Rex Lee and Alan Tudyk. “We delve deeper into their backstories.” ABC comedy airs Wednesdays at 8:30p.
Will Smith will be the first guest, and U2 the first music guest when The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon premieres Monday, February 17 on NBC. As for “Starring” replacing “With” in the late night talker’s title, Fallon explained at the TCA, “It’s glamorous. It’s Hollywood. It’s kind of fun.”
Seth Meyers‘ first guest as host of NBC‘s Late Night will be Amy Poehler, announced Meyers at the TCA. Meyer, who starts his run Monday, February 24, leaves his Saturday Night Live Weekend Update chair after the February 1 show.
NBC‘s Bob Greenblatt revealed at the TCA Sunday that Poehler’s Parks and Recreation would get a seventh season renewal, but was candid about the net’s struggling Thursday comedy lineup. “We’re, obviously, not happy about a .6 for any show and especially for Michael J. Fox,” said Greenblatt. “It is a real, real uphill battle.”
Upcoming Fox drama Rake is giving potential viewers a free ride. Now through Thursday, January 23, the net is promoting the show via a partnership with car service Uber that hands out 200 rides a night for people who follow @FOXTV on Twitter and use the #dontjudge hashtag. Rake, starring Greg Kinnear as a criminal defense lawyer prone to bad behavior, premieres January 23 at 9p.

New Esquire docu-series Friday Night Tykes explores the intense world of Texas youth football – but it’s not about the game. “It’s about parenting,” exec producer Matt Maranz tells Cynopsis. “Every parent wants what’s best for their kids, and we’ve set up the youth sports system to help accomplish that. But how much is truly benefitting our kids? How hard should we push our kids? How young is too young? I think the series will resonate with Esquire’s audience because it actually joins a conversation already in progress.” Show airs Tuesdays at 10p.
