12.11.14

Good morning, back from vacation and many thanks to Joe Favorito for covering for me this past week.

It’s Thursday, December 11, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN is touting its record viewership for the college football season, with its FBS telecasts snaring nearly 200 million viewers this year for 453 exclusive regular-season games. ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNEWS combined to top 185,687,000 viewers for 272 telecasts, averaging 1,767,000 viewers, while the 517 FBS games on WatchESPN generated 1,200,000,000 live minutes viewed, for an 80% markup over 2013.

Saturday Night Football on ABC finished the season as the most-viewed and highest-rated weekly college football night game on television, according to the company, notching 5,106,000 viewers a game and a 3.2 rating for 7% YoY increases in each category. ESPN’s Saturday night games also generated spikes, averaging 4,397,000 viewers for a 24% rise. Top five markets in 2014: Birmingham with a 9.2 rating, followed by New Orleans, Knoxville, Greenville and Memphis/Atlanta (tie).

ON THE AIR

ABC is reportedly deepening its ties with the NBA, and is developing a scripted comedy with the league that has now drawn a put pilot commitment, according to Deadline. The series would be executive produced by Dan Fogelman along with Peter Guber, Mike Tollin and Aaron Kaplan. The half-hour show is being developed with cooperation from the league as well as the Golden State Warriors, which happen to be co-owned by Guber and would follow a fictional rookie who “doesn’t speak English and a translator who doesn’t speak basketball.”

ESPN also made its broadcast assignments for its 38-game college bowl slate, which will include the inaugural College Football Playoff format. The Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will see Joe Tessitore, Brock Huard & Shannon Spake on microphone duties at 12:30p, followed by the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl at 4p with Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman & Todd McShay calling the action and the Capital One Orange Bowl at 8p, featuring Brent Musburger, Jesse Palmer & Maria Taylor. New Year’s Day begins with the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at 12:30p, with Dave Pasch, Brian Griese & Tom Luginbill in the booth, followed by the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual at 5p with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Heather Cox & Tom Rinaldi and concluding with the Allstate Sugar Bowl at 8:30, and Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge & Holly Rowe making the call. The Jan. 12 College Football Playoff National Championship Presented by AT&T will see Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Heather Cox & Tom Rinaldi covering the historic game.

Speaking of college football, CBS Sports carries the 115th run of the Army/Navy football classic on Saturday at 3p. CBS Sports Network will deliver live pre-game coverage with a special telecast featuring the traditional “March On” procession when the Brigade of Midshipmen and Corps of Cadets make their entrance into the stadium. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the action.

Amid buzz about Chicago Cubs’ deal with free agent pitcher Jon Lester on Tuesday, MLB Network’s primetime coverage set a Winter Meetings record for the network, drawing 179,000 viewers and up 48% from the prior record. MLB Network’s Winter Meetings coverage continues on Thursday starting at 11a.

This week’s Monday Night Football telecast pushed the network to the top of the heap to win the night across all broadcast and cable networks among households, viewers and all key male and adult demos. The game averaged an 8.5 household score with 13,958,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. On ESPN Deportes, the contest averaged a 0.5 Hispanic Household US rating with 110,000 Hispanic P2+ impressions.

Spike TV is set to expand its offerings of combat sports, according to Sherdog.com, and will reportedly add boxing to the mix in 2015. The article states that fights would likely take place on Fridays, rotating with the likes of Bellator MMA for an action packed evening.

While news broadcasts may be holding steady, their credibility with young viewers isn’t. Linda Ong of TruthCo has some solutions: Check them out in Cynsiders.

A big congratulations to Dick Enberg, who was awarded the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting. Baseball’s Hall of Fame made the announcement on Wednesday.

The Atlanta Hawks and iHeartMedia locked in a deal to broadcast eight Hawks games on local Spanish language station El Patron 105.3 FM this season, it was announced today. This marks the first time Hawks contests will be aired completely in Spanish by an Atlanta radio outlet.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Translation has been named the “primary creative agency” for the NBA. The company confirmed the news on its social media channels, with reports stating that the league would be switching from Omnicom’s Goodby Silverstein & Partners. The news comes after the appointment of Pam El as the league’s new CMO.

Anheuser-Busch InBev will shift its U.S. sales and marketing forces from St. Louis to NYC in 2015. Company headquarters will remain in St. Louis.

Major League Baseball broke the $9 billion plateau in 2014, according to Forbes, marking an all-time high for the league. That is up sharply from the $8 billion made in 2013. The increase in revenues is largely due to new broadcast deals with their national network partners FOX, ESPN, and TBS.

CONCACAF locked in a new deal with Scotiabank, which will serve as the international bank as title sponsor of the CONCACAF Champions League and official bank of the Confederation. The deal spans multiple years, covering tournaments through 2018. In addition to title sponsorship of the Champions League, Scotiabank also becomes an official sponsor for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Collegiate Licensing Company inked an extension of its partnership with University of California to continue managing the school’s trademark licensing program through 2017. Through its relationship with CLC, the university has participated in select co-branded partnerships that include Victoria’s Secret PINK, Dockers, and the recently launched Star Wars themed college collection.
