Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Saturday’s MLS Cup Final made a historic milestone, as UniMas, whose broadcast of the game delivered an average of 514,000 total viewers and 245,000 Adults 18-49 for a 12% rise year-to-year, marked the first time a Spanish language broadcast of the final bested its English equivalent. ESPN delivered 505,000 for the same game. In fact, Univision is reporting that its broadcasts of the MLS regular season on UniMas beat out both ESPN2 and NBCSN in total viewers with an average of 223,000.

ON THE AIR

This week’s Monday Night Football telecast between the Cowboys and Bears marked ESPN’s highest-rated and most-viewed MNF game this season with a 10.2 US rating, representing an average of 11,815,000 households and 16,192,000 viewers (P2+), according to Nielsen. In Dallas, the game delivered a 19.9 rating on ESPN and a 5.8 on KTXD-IND, for a combined 25.6 rating in the market. Chicago delivered a 12.9 rating on ESPN and a 24.5 on WLS-ABC, for a combined 37.4 rating in the market. Through 14 weeks (15 games), ESPN’s MNF is averaging an 8.6 rating with 13,677,000 viewers in 2013 for upticks of 2% and 4% respectively over the same period a year ago. In addition, the telecast on ESPN Deportes scored as the most-watched NFL game ever on nationally broadcast Spanish-language television, averaging a 0.7 US Hispanic Household rating and 174,000 Hispanic viewers (P2+).

CBS Sports reports that, through 13 weeks of the 2013 NFL regular-season, The NFL on CBS is averaging 18.8 million to mark a 6% spike over last year’s 17.8 million viewers. That score ranks as the highest number of average viewers for the first 13 weeks of the season for the AFC television package in 26 years. So far, the league is pulling an average national household rating/share of 11.2/23, up 5% from last year’s 10.7/22.

Speaking of the NFL, NBC is flexing its week 16 option and will shift the Dec. 22 Bears/Eagles into primetime for Sunday Night Football. Meanwhile the Patriots/Ravens game now goes to 4:25p on CBS.

Cartoon Network revealed plans for the 2014 Hall of Game Awards, which will air in February. The fourth annual event will see two brand new categories debut in 2014. In the “MVC: Most Valuable Cartoon” category the nominees are Adventure Time, Ben 10, Steven Universe and Regular Show. The action starts Monday, Dec. 23 with a doubleheader every night at 11p.

Meanwhile, Discovery Channel announced a deal for a new boxing series from UFC President Dana White dubbed The Fighters. The reality series, from Pilgrim Studios, will debut on Jan. 23 at 9p and will focus on South Boston boxers as trainers from rival boxing gyms across Boston choose their top amateur fighters to represent their gyms in a bout. After seven days of intense training, the fighters will face off in the ring with their professional futures at stake.

CBS Sports Network will carry the presentation of the 2013 Phillips 66 Rotary Lombardi Award live tonight at 9p. This year’s finalists for the award, given to the best lineman on offense or defense, are Anthony Barr (UCLA), Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh), CJ Mosley (Alabama) and Michael Sam (Missouri). Barr, Donald, Mosley and Sam will all be in attendance for the live announcement. CBS Sports college football analyst Spencer Tillman and Rachel Boribeau host.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban will join team ESPN for the BCS title game on Jan. 6, according to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch.
