Pay-TV distributors are missing the boat with VOD, Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes warned at the UBS Global Media and Communications conference on Tuesday, saying they are relying on overly complicated interfaces and lackluster promotion. Bewkes singled out Comcast and Verizon for praise, but added, “frankly, a lot of other distributors haven’t moved fast enough or effectively enough to deliver.”

 IN THE NEWS

Also at the media conference, CBS CEO Les Moonves predicted “a lot more C7” in next year’s upfront, and pointed out that it’s not unreasonable for broadcasters to get paid for ads that are viewed even weeks after they first air because so much advertising is not time sensitive. “You’re selling Kraft Macaroni and Cheese,” said Moonves. “What’s the difference if you watch now or 22 days from now?”

Bette Midler will play Mae West in a project in development at HBO, reports Deadline. It seems bound for TV – not only is Midler attached, but William Friedkin is on board to direct and exec produce, and Harvey Fierstein to write.

During A&E‘s Duck Dynasty Christmas Special tonight, the net will kick off its collaboration with Twitter Amplify with content across social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram rolling out quote cards and memes in real time, and a “Retweet to Win” sweeps. Holiday ep airs tonight, December 11 at 10p.

UP and DISH are partnering on holiday initiatives. A free preview of UP is available for DISH customers through December 31, and UP will be one of the feature sponsors on DISH’s 25 Days of DISHmas campaign highlighting programming from partner networks. “This is win-win for UP and DISH,” Wendy McCoy, SVP of marketing for UP, tells Cynopsis. “We are increasing awareness of our network’s 400 hours of uplifting Christmas programming, while DISH is providing even more value for their subscribers.”

The NBCUniversal Foundation announced $1.2 million in grants for non-profit organizations in the 10 markets served by the NBCUni Owned Television Stations. Each of the stations promoted the initiative, to spur new ideas for addressing ongoing community challenges, and created a panel to select the recipients.

Ensequence announced partnership agreements with AMC Networks and Reelzchannel for AdConneqt+, its platform for national interactive TV advertising that allows advertisers to measure viewer engagement by including interactive features in 30-second ads. AdConneqt+ is aiming for a go-live date in the first quarter of 2014. “One of our goals early on,” said Ensequence COO David Kline, “is to demonstrate the value AdConneqt+ adds to independent as well as corporately owned networks.”

It’s going to be busy in Miami. NATPE president and CEO Rod Perth reported in a conference call that attendance for the January 2014 market event is up, with more buyers, exhibitors, station groups and advertisers. Every major American studio will have a presence, said Perth, and 44 percent of attendees will come from outside the U.S.
