An inauguration reality show? Well, sort of. Donald Trump is collaborating with Mark Burnett, his former producer on The Apprentice, on a special about the January 20 presidential inauguration in D.C. and the events leading up to it. The former colleagues reportedly met at Trump Tower on Wednesday to discuss ideas. Thomas Barrack Jr., an old friend of Trump’s who was at the meeting said, “The president-elect wants this to be simple,” reported the NY Times. “He wants this to be about the people. It’s not about putting on the most expensive talent and spending that kind of money to ingratiate himself.”
In other president-elect news, Variety reports that Donald Trump will remain an EP on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice, returning Monday, January 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger doing the firing. Trump’s status on the 15th season of the reality series had been a question since he launched his presidential campaign in 2015.
Lionsgate closed a $4.4 billion cash and stock deal, originally announced back in June, to buy Starz. “After planning the integration of Lionsgate and Starz for the past five months, we are more excited than ever at the value created by the combination of our two great companies,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer and Vice Chairman Michael Burns said in a joint statement. The deal leaves Lionsgate with a 16,000-title film and television library. At the end of September, Starz had 24.5 million subscription units and the Starz Encore Network had 31.5 million.
CBS News reached a long-term deal with Gayle King that will keep the CBS This Morning cast – King, Norah O’Donnell and Charlie Rose – intact. The New York Post’s Page 6 column reported the deal to be upwards of $5 million a year.
Add Candace Cameron Bure to the list of hosts leaving ABC’s The View. Bure shared the news on Thursday, calling it a “tough” decision based on the success of Netflix’s Full House reboot Fuller House and her commitment to Hallmark Channel movies.
NBC released its midseason lineup. New comedy Trial & Error, co-starring John Lithgow, bows at 9:30p on Tuesday, March 7, following a 90-minute telecast of The Voice. Great News, from EPs and 30 Rock Emmy winners Tracey Wigfield, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, debuts in an hour-long block with back-to-back episodes beginning Tuesday, April 25 at 9p. Powerless, based on characters from DC Comics, bows Thursday, February 2 at 8:30p, following Superstore. In addition, the network is debuting a powerful new Sunday lineup beginning March 5 with the return of Little Big Shots, Chicago Justice and Shades of Blue.
Viceland will present a special episode of Balls Deep with Thomas Morton highlighting the issue of veteran’s homelessness on Thursday, December 29 at 10p. The show features a guest appearance by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Vice Media is teaming with British newspaper The Guardian on a partnership that will give Vice access to original investigative news reporting from a unit of Guardian journalists. Meanwhile, the paper will tap into Vice’s video production skills and distribution platform to maximize revenue and exposure of its journalism. The pact includes co-branded special reports that will air nightly on Vice news offerings.
Niall Horan, Lukas Graham, Shawn Mendes, Emeli Sande and Fifth Harmony featuring Kid Ink and Ty Dolla $ign join the Billboard Hollywood Party on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2017. Fergie, set to host the event from Los Angeles, will perform two songs leading up to the 2017 countdown. Annual event airs Saturday, December 31 beginning at 8p.
Bruno Mars, Sting and The Weeknd are set to perform on the finale of NBC’s The Voice, airing Tuesday, December 13 at 9p. One of the four finalists Josh Gallagher from Team Adam, Billy Gilman from Team Adam, Sundance Head from Team Blake or We’ McDonald from Team Alicia will be crowned the season’s winner.
The American Film Institute’s released its annual list of the year’s 10 best TV shows. FX and HBO both snagged three spots, while only one broadcast network program made the cut. The full list of shows are: The Americans (FX), Atlanta (FX), Better Call Saul (AMC), The Crown (Netflix), Game of Thrones (HBO), The Night Of (HBO), The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (FX), Stranger Things (Netflix), This Is Us (NBC) and Veep (HBO). An AFI Special Award went to O.J.: Made in America (ESPN).
Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing, is being honored with the Writers Guild of America West’s 2017 Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement. He will receive the award, given in recognition of his career and body of work, at the WGAW’s 2017 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Sunday, February 19, at The Beverly Hilton.
CMT revealed “17 for 2017” artists for its Listen Up campaign, which recognizes and supports country music’s most promising new artists. NBC issued a pilot order to Good Girls, a drama from The Family creator Jenna Bans. The project, which hails from Universal TV, centers on three “good girl” suburban wives and mothers who suddenly find themselves in desperate circumstances and decide to stop playing it safe.
A reboot of Strike Back was greenlit by Cinemax and Sky. The action series, which begins filming in 2017, will have new characters and a new cast. Alin Sumarwata, Daniel MacPherson, Roxanne McKee and Warren Brown are set to star in the production.
Meryl Poster, EP of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, is developing two scripted series for Lifetime. The Power Playbook is based on La La Anthony’s bestseller. Molly centers around the prescription drugs business. Both projects hail from Poster’s Superb Entertainment, which has the financial backing of Lifetime parent A+E Networks.
New Form announced an $18M series B round of funding from ITV and Discovery Communications, with ITV taking a minority stake in the company and striking a strategic partnership with New Form. “This investment marks a significant validation of New Form’s focus and creative output over the last two years,” said Kathleen Grace, New Form CEO. we are thrilled to have ITV and Discovery as partners for New Form’s next chapter.”
E! renewed Botched for a fourth, 18-episode season. Plastic surgeons Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif’s surgical skills will once again be put to the test as they set out to correct damage done from plastic surgeries gone wrong.
The Brown family returns for a news season of Alaskan Bush People on Wednesday, January 4 at 9p on Discovery. Following a year of setbacks, the clan is determined to get back to their bushpeople roots.
TV One redefines the dating and game show genres with The Game of Dating, premiering Tuesday, January 31 at 8p. Hosted by comedian Tony Rock, the one-hour series takes a voyeuristic look at real-life dating, while teams watch, react and compete to win cash prizes.
MTV’s fifth season of Are You The One? bows Wednesday, January 11 at 9p. The matchmaking series features adventurous singles who turn their backs on dysfunctional relationship habits and surrender to a new process.
UP TV announced return dates for two series. Bringing Up Bates Season 5 premieres Thursday, January 5 at 9p. Growing Up McGhee bows Thursday, January 12 at 9:30p.
Professional contractor Mike Holmes teams with his son, home renovation expert Mike Jr., to transform the twentysomething’s bachelor pad into a proper home in upcoming DIY Network series Holmes & Holmes. Premiering Tuesday, January 3 at 10p, the 6-episode series follows the duo as they gut, renovate and expand the single-story 750-square foot bungalow into two-story home.
NBC set Thursday, February 23 for the premiere of spinoff The Blacklist: Redemption, which will air in the same 10p timeslot as The Blacklist for eight weeks. At the conclusion of The Blacklist: Redemption, James Spader and The Blacklist will return at 10p on Thursday, April 20 with a two-hour episode.
Friday Night Tykes premieres its fourth season on Esquire on Tuesday, January 17 at 9p. Series provide an authentic look at the cultural phenomenon that is American football at the youth level.
Investigation Discovery debuts Murder Chose Me on Wednesday, February 15 at 10p. Series stars Rod Demery, who reflects on his 14 years as a homicide detective a destiny he was drawn to after his mother was murdered.
Bravo Media bows First Family of Hip Hop on Sunday, January 15 at 9p. Series centers on The Robinsons, who rose to fame in the 1970s when they put rap on the map with Sugarhill Records.
Spike set Caraoke Showdown’s premiere for Thursday, January 12 at 10:30p. Series takes groups of passengers on a musical journey to win money by competing in a variety of karaoke-style challenges.

Reality format Grandpas Over Flowers, also known as NBC’s Better Late Than Never, was set for adaptation in Italy. The deal, brokered by Small World in collaboration with Endemol Shine Italy, will see a local version of the show making its Italian debut on RAI 2 in 2017.
Studiocanal concluded a deal in Russia for for Swedish-French drama Midnight Sun.Free-to-air broadcaster Channel One, secured the eight-part thriller to air in January 2017.
4K Media Inc. secured a new broadcast partnership for the Yu-Gi-Oh! television franchise in Latin America. Telenica Canal 8 in Nicaragua acquired Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Seasons 1 to 5) and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Seasons 1 to 3) to broadcast in Spanish on free TV in 2017.

Criminal Minds was the most watched regularly scheduled program in its time period, beating Empire for the first time ever in viewers and finishing in its closest competitive position in both A18-49 and A25-54, according to Nielsen preliminary live plus same day ratings for Wednesday, December 7. The CBS series averaged 7.73 million viewers, up 4 percent from last week and out delivering Empire (a healthy 7.0 million). It was the largest audience for Criminal Minds since October 12.
Season 3 of TV One’s Rickey Smiley For Real is up versus Seasons 1 and 2 through the first three episodes among P25-54. During the first three episodes, RSFR Season 3 posted two consecutive weeks audience gains across key demos (P25-54, P18-49, W18-49).
BBC America experienced consistent total day growth in 2016, most recently with November becoming the network’s most watched month ever among total viewers and A25-54. The channel enjoyed strong year-over-year growth across all dayparts, leading to total day gains of up 47 percent in total viewers and up 40 percent in A25-54.
CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on December 6, featuring special guest Vice President Joe Biden, was the top show in late night in viewers. It delivered its largest Tuesday audience since October 2015, according to Nielsen Live+SD ratings. The show averaged 3.39 million viewers. In key demographics, The Late Show averaged 0.8/04 in A25-54 and 0.6/03 in S18-49.
