TOP NEWS
 

AOL and A+E Networks have joined together in programmatic union. As part of a wide-ranging deal, A+E will be able to license ONE By AOL (AOL’s programmatic ad platform) to create its own private exchange marketplace. “[They’ll be] inviting their own partners into their own closed ecosystem,” AOL Publisher Platforms President Tim Mahlman explained to Adweek. As part of the deal, A+E has also agreed to an upfront ad commitment; the company will use AOL’s content brands­including TechCrunch, the Huffington Post, and Xbox­to drive awareness to the programs on its networks, which include Lifetime and History. AOL was acquired by Verizon earlier this year.
 
YouTube Red, YouTube’s recently launched subscription service, has already announced a handful of digital series set to roll out early next year. But in the long run, will those be enough to get users to pay-and keep paying-the $9.99 a month subscription fee? YouTube may not think so. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Google-owned company has been in active talks with major Hollywood studios and production companies in an effort to secure premium film and TV content to license for the service. Few details are known about which potential partners YouTube has been speaking with.
 
Watch out, Periscope. While Facebook made live-streaming features available to certain celebrities earlier this year, now the company is turning its sights to the teeming masses. Facebook is beginning a rollout that will eventually allow all users to broadcast live video to followers and friends. The feature has initially been made available to a select number of U.S.-based iPhone users. Facebook made the announcement in a blog post-check it out here.
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Gen-Z oriented interactive live-streaming platform YouNow has partnered with Roker Labs, the division of Al Roker Entertainment devoted to tracking live streaming talent. The news, first reported by VideoInk, was announced at the TV of Tomorrow Show in NYC. Beginning in early 2016, YouNow will introduce a series of Roker Labs-produced short pilots on its platform.  Food will be the initial focus.  
 
FamiLeague, the recently launched MCN focused on the intersection of sports and family, has partnered with NFL star Greg Jennings. Jennings Journey, a new series starring the wide receiver, his wife, and their four kids, will be the lead-in for a yet-to-be announced slate of family lifestyle content.

VIRTUAL REALITY
 

The holidays are coming, and there’s been a flood of news about virtual reality. ….speaking of which, Google announced the release of Cardboard Camera, a new Android app that allows users to create immersive 360-degree panoramas with their smartphone cameras, then view them using the Cardboard viewer. Google is billing the app as an opportunity to “step inside personal moments.” Check out the announcement here

 

Cable network Fusion has made a content deal with Littlstar, a relatively new virtual reality network. Fusion will create VR content to run across VR and mobile VR platforms, leveraging Littlstar’s platform, network, and apps for distribution.

 
 
OTT + SVOD
 

Seeso, the new ad-free comedy streaming channel from NBCUniversal, made its beta debut yesterday. Cynopsis Digital spoke with Evan Shapiro, EVP of NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, who calls Seeso a combination of the best features of linear TV and OTT. Check out what he had to say here.
 
And to think this is just a tiny fraction of the country. Chinese streaming provider iQiyi announced that, as of December 1, it had reached 10 million paid subscribers, the largest subscriber base of any Chinese streaming platform. Back in June, that number was 5 million. According to the company, the data comes from the China Netcasting Services Association and the China Internet Information Center
 
International film and TV streaming network DramaFever is rolling out a slate of “DF Minis” – short-form series with roughly ten-minute-long episodes. Starting today, five new Minis will make appearances throughout December. When a new series debuts, all of its episodes will be made available at once.
 
 

PLATFORMS + TECH
 

Vimeo has begun introducing adaptive bitrate streaming across its service, paving the way for 4K Ultra HD video streaming capabilities. Adaptive streaming and 4K capabilities will initially be available only to a select number of viewers, but the company says the features will roll out to everyone in Q1 of 2016. At launch, the adaptive bitrate and 4K support will be available on Vimeo.com, as well as the company’s VOD platform, iOS, and Apple TV. Amazon TV, Roku and Android will arrive in the coming months, according to Vimeo.
 
 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Digital studio Indigenous Media has announced several new hires. Ben Fast, most recently the Director of Scripted Television at The Weinstein Company, will now serve as Indigenous Media’s EVP of Development. Maira Nevarez, most recently the VP of Finance for NBCUniversal properties E! Entertainment and Esquire, will now serve as Indigenous Media’s EVP of Finance and Operations.

Yesterday, VR animation start-up Baobab Studios announced that it had raised $6 million in its series A funding. Comcast Ventures led the round, with participation from HTC, Samsung, and several others.  A sneak peak of Invasion!, the company’s first VR experience, is already available for Samsung Gear VR viewers through the Milk VR app. Take a look here.
