Medias First Morning Read
Monday December 19, 2022

Twitter suspended the accounts of several journalists without warning on Thursday, after some of the accounts had reported on the suspension of Mastodon. The account of the Twitter rival had been yanked after Mastodon linked to a bot that tracked the location of Elon Musk’s private jet. “Same doxxing rules apply to ‘journalists’ as to everyone else,” tweeted Musk. On Friday night, Musk restored the reporters’ accounts in response to a poll on his personal account that saw 59% of voters in favor of the move.

Then on Saturday, the Twitter account of Washington Post tech columnist Taylor Lorenz was suspended after she tweeted a request for a comment at Musk for a story she was working on. “Elon seems to be banning anyone who disagrees with him,” said Lorenz in a TikTok video. On Sunday, Musk tweeted that his action was a “Temp suspension due to prior doxxing action by this account. Will be lifted shortly.”

Two former Twitter employees are launching a new platform, Spill. “Most critically, we are focused on rewarding creators who frequently set new trends yet are routinely overlooked – especially Black women, the queer community and many other vibrant communities,” says the website. CEO Alphonzo Terrell, former global head of Social and Editorial at Twitter, and CTO DeVaris Brown, former product manager lead, expect the platform to launch in 6-8 weeks.

YouTube has removed the channel for sex site Pornhub for violating YouTube’s policy against linking to external websites that host content prohibited on YouTube. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation had flagged the channel on Friday for an alleged violation. Not so, argues Pornhub. “Pornhub maintains the absolute best trust and safety measures on the internet and takes special care to ensure it does not violate any of YouTube’s Community Guidelines,” said the company in a statement. “Unfortunately, this is just the latest example of discrimination against those in the adult industry.”

Jimmy Fallon, Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart are among the celebrities named in a class-action lawsuit alleging that Yuga Labs, parent company of NFT series Bored Ape Yacht Club, used A-listers to artificially inflate the value of NFT tokens and engaged in misleading promotions. A Yuga Labs spokesperson labeled the allegations “opportunistic and parasitic.”

An outage on Wednesday that resulted in many FuboTV subscribers missing the World Cup semifinal match between France and Morocco, “was not related to any bandwidth constraints on Fubo’s part,” said the streamer. “We were instead the target of a criminal cyberattack.” FuboTV said it has reported the incident to authorities and enlisted a security incident response company to investigate.

Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics have struck a deal under which Crystal Dynamics will develop a new multiplatform title in the Tomb Raider series. Amazon Games will provide “full support” and publish the game globally.

Super League Gaming and advertising agency DMA United are collaborating to deliver new discovery and monetization avenues for fashion, style, and luxury IP, with a fashion-centered launchpad for brands and creators. The collaboration will use DMA’s polycultural platform of clients, partners, individuals and brands, and Super League’s expertise, relationships, publishing and audience development capabilities in the metaverse.

Cloud-native database SingleStore announced the general availability of its 8.0 release. “The need for real time is here, but it doesn’t just happen through sheer will,” said Raj Verma, CEO, SingleStore. “Real time has been baked into our foundational design from very early on, and the continued innovation with the latest announcement sets us apart as the world’s only unified database that allows you to transact and reason with data in real time in a multi-cloud hybrid distributed environment.”

Omens Studios is launching the “Omens Multiverse” to take animation and movie-based IPs into virtual reality and interactive experiences. The studio has two projects currently in development – “Circle Line” and “Oasis” – which will both be available as VR experiences and have NFT collections. Omens Studios is also creating a Roblox experience based on series “Leo the Wildlife Ranger”, coming 2Q23.

To encourage people to try +play, its free subscription management platform in beta, Verizon is offering a free year of Netflix’s premium plan with the purchase of another subscription (options include AMC+, NFL Plus and Calm, among others). “The platform reflects Verizon’s core commitment to serve the changing needs of consumers, who are empowered – more than ever – to choose the kinds of content and experiences they want, and the platform is a marketplace for content partners to leverage even broader direct-to-consumer reach and engagement,” said Verizon Chief Content Officer Erin McPherson.

DirecTV Stream’s offerings now include Peacock for $2.99/month, $2.00 off the regular price. Customers are able to manage Peacock and other subs purchased via DirecTV through a single bill.

MotorTrend Group programming is now available on Freevee, via MotorTrend FAST TV. “MotorTrend FAST TV is the perfect bridge to help casual viewers become devoted gear heads, which in turn will allow them to delve deeper into MotorTrend’s unparalleled catalog of premium automotive content,” said Mark Jocson, Head of Distribution, MotorTrend Group.

More than 60% of its subscribers have watched Korean content in 2022, revealed Netflix, and Korean content was included in the streamer’s Weekly Top 10 chart in more than 90 countries. Korea’s “Squid Game,” “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” and “All of Us Are Dead” all made Netflix’s Top 10 most popular non-English shows ever, with “Squid Game” topping the list of all shows regardless of language.

The household penetration levels of the major subscription streaming services held mostly flat YoY, with the exception of Paramount+, which has jumped up to 17% from 11% driven by “Yellowstone.” That’s according to the latest DASH study from ARF, which noted Disney (41% up from 39%) and HBO Max (29% up from 27%) have risen slightly, while the market leaders, Netflix (66% down from 69%) and Amazon Prime (56% down from 58%), have declined slightly. Netflix and Disney remain the most shared services among both friends (12% and 13% respectively) and relatives (36% and 33% respectively).

Music video network Vevo has extended its partnership with Amazon with the launch of 24/7 Vevo channels on Freevee. Each Vevo channel features linear programming dedicated to a specific decade, genre, or theme. “Amazon has already been a critical partner for Vevo in bringing on-demand, premium music video content to music fans via our Vevo app on Fire TV and Echo Show. We are excited to now expand our distribution footprint with Freevee in the FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) space, which is a major growth area for Vevo,” said Rob Christensen, SVP, Global Sales & Distribution, Vevo. “For our brand partners, this launch creates even more CTV advertising opportunities on the Vevo network.”

Dateline 24/7, Just for Laughs GAGS, Localish, and BET Pluto TV have joined Samsung’s offering of 250 premium channels. Samsung TV Plus is available in 24 countries and 465 million devices.

Outdoor Sportsman Group’s MyOutdoorTV is adding “Angler Stream,” the 24/7, ad-free streaming channel that features fishing shows.

Cadent Aperture Platform announced a partnership with 605 to understand the full impact of campaigns and measure business outcomes. Inscape, a provider of ACR data from VIZIO Smart TVs, has unveiled a proprietary TV audience weighting solution designed to build an ACR dataset that is nationally representative of the US population, called the National Representative Panel (NRP). The NRP calibrates a significant subset of smart TVs within the Inscape TV panel and balances it to the US Census, removing variances across audience segments such as age, gender, income, location, cable subscription, antenna usage and ethnicity.

A custom survey of group viewing found the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day games had an average-minute audience of 44.1 million viewers, up 31% from Nielsen’s original report. “Quantifying the exact number of people watching NFL games on Thanksgiving presents additional challenges due to the fact that so many people gather in different group settings with family and friends,” said Paul Ballew, Chief Data and Analytics Officer of the NFL. “As was the case with our study around the Super Bowl, we feel this Nielsen custom survey helps provide a more complete picture of the total viewership for this unique day on the NFL calendar.”
