Sinclair Broadcast Group is dropping its political commentary segments , and expanding its local investigative footprint. “We have to shine a light on our value proposition every quarter hour, in every newscast,” said the company in a memo to staff. “We are excited to dedicate more time in our newscasts to report on critical and relevant issues. To allot additional airtime for this storytelling, we will be ending the commentary segments this Friday, Dec. 13, featuring Ameshia Cross, and Boris Epshteyn.” A former President Trump aide, Epshteyn was known for right-wing commentary; Cross was hired to offer a liberal perspective.
Entertainment Studios announced nationwide distribution of two original weekly series from The Weather Channel. Procedural/true crime show Storm of Suspicion examines how weather played a part in crimes, while Weather Gone Viral features videos of extreme weather events shared online. “Weather is the number one news driver for local television stations,” said Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Entertainment Studios. “These shows are exceptionally compelling and appeal to all demographics. Our station partners realize the enormous value these series offer to complement their local weather coverage.” Both weekly series have clearances with group-owned television stations including FOX O&Os, Scripps, Nexstar, Meredith, Gray, and Hearst for broadcast syndication’s 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

A cyber attack hit Spokane NBC affiliate KHQ-TV on Sunday , targeting technical software. Workarounds included fewer on-screen graphics and video. “It’s very late ‘90s all of a sudden in here,” Traci Zeravica, director of content and communication for the station, told the Spokesman-Review.
Website ET Online and streaming network ET Live are merging , leading to the layoffs of at least 12 people. “We have integrated the ET Online and ET Live teams to create one content group that will support and drive the ET brand across all digital platforms,” said a CBS Television Distribution Digital spokesperson. “As a result, some positions were reduced.” ET Live hosts Tanner Thomason and Jason Carter were let go, while host Melicia Johnson moved to ET Digital.

HGTV gave a season three renewal to Bargain Mansions , with an order for eight new episodes. The Kansas City-based series attracted more than 11.2 million Total Viewers during its sophomore run.
Marvel Television is shutting down , with current TV projects continuing but development on new shows discontinued. Karim Zreik, SVP of current programming and production, and his team will move to the Marvel Studios group, but the change is expected to mean the elimination of other positions. Word of the impending exit of Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb came out in October;
Glasgow-based Synchronicity Films is partnering with music executive Steve Buchanan (Nashville) on scripted project Shepherd’s Retreat. Series is a mystery thriller set in a small Scottish village, featuring original songs covering a range of musical styles from Scottish folk to its American musical descendants.
An upcoming scripted series from Netflix will follow the story of music streamer Spotify. Yellow Bird UK (Young Wallander) is producing.

In new Discovery Channel series Reclaimed, homesteaders who purchased mining claims for pennies on the dollar enlist two experts to help unearth hidden treasure. Launching Thursday, January 9 at 9p, the series is part of Discovery’s new “Off the Grid Thursdays” block, along with Homestead Rescue (premiering January 2) and Building Off the Grid, beginning a new season January 9.
Miz & Mrs will be back for season two on USA on Wednesday, January 29 at 10p. Docu-series follows the family lifestyle of married WWE stars The Miz and Maryse, and complements USA’s five hours of live WWE programming each week.
Also picked up for a sophomore run is Comedy Central interview show Good Talk with Anthony Jeselnik. “Anthony has a knack for wit and irony in the flow of conversation, which makes him a hilarious and great interviewer,” said Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, Co-Heads of Original Content at CC. “It’ll be a treat to see him continue to push boundaries with an all-new lineup of comedian friends.”

With no lack of grist for the mill, Showtime’s The Circus returns for season five on Sunday, January 26 at 8p – a week before the Iowa caucuses. Season four had its finale on November 10.
Disney and France Télévisions ordered two more seasons preschool hit Gigantosaurus from Cyber Group Studios. The CGI-animated series will add 104 new episodes, to be made available worldwide on both Disney Junior and Disney+ as well as France Télévisions and Germany’s Super RTL.

FreeWheel and DISH Media are teaming to enable linear inventory allocation and a holistic view of TV advertising performance across both traditional, demo-based buys and household- level, addressable TV campaigns. FreeWheel, a Comcast company, developed the solution to meet a growing need among distributors and programmers. “Making addressable advertising more viable is important to the industry,” said FreeWheel General Manager Dave Clark. “Distributors need to maximize inventory value, while also reducing manual workflow and improving operational workflows. This ensures marketers’ campaigns are optimally paced and reach their targeted audiences in the most efficient way possible.”
Smart TV company Vizio announced the launch of business unit Vizio Ads, enabling agencies and advertisers to buy premium TV ad inventory across the Vizio SmartCastTM platform. “One of the best ways to improve the TV viewing experience is to improve the state of TV advertising,” said VIZIO founder and CEO William Wang. “The launch of direct advertising across our TV platform isn’t just good business for us, it’s an investment we’re making to help the industry at large.”
SpotX is teaming with TiVo to power the monetization of TiVo+ and TiVo’s connected TV inventory . S potX will help programmatically manage, sell, and optimize TiVo’s video ad inventory, and its demand facilitation services will connect advertisers to TiVo’s inventory running on its TiVo+ and CTV platforms. “We see hardware and software platforms as the next important player within the advertising ecosystem because they aggregate audiences, retain a big chunk of the inventory pie, and hold proprietary audience data which is highly coveted,” said Geoff Spence, RVP of platform at SpotX. “The growth of free, ad-supported, streaming TV services and changes in viewership has positioned TiVo as a formidable player in the marketplace by offering advertisers new ways they can reach a premium audience.”
Verizon Media introduced a unified digital-out-of-home solution for DOOH publishers, giving them one provider to host, manage, stream, and monetize content. “The DOOH opportunity has exploded,” said Iván Markman, Chief Business Officer at Verizon Media. “But DOOH publishers face an increasingly convoluted content management process plagued by rising costs and inefficiencies. Unlocking their content’s monetization potential is also a challenge, requiring them to build a pipeline to quality DOOH advertisers and to manage an ad tech stack. In unveiling an integrated SSP that syncs with our Verizon Digital Signage platform, we can be a powerful partner for the DOOH industry.” 
Kantar and IRI announced the launch of a new closed-loop growth solution for CPG brands that combines IRI’s sales data and Kantar’s brand data, to enable clients to more effectively measure and optimize marketing programs against two business success drivers: long-term brand health and short-term sales. “Our new collaboration will strengthen our ability to help clients see what people buy and why, both short-term and long-term,” said Jen Bukich, VP of Global Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Kantar. “By combining Kantar’s behavioral data with IRI’s purchase data, we can offer brands custom segmentation that will help them realize their advertising objectives.”
Comcast and wearable technology startup NuEyes are teaming to bring the Xfinity Stream entertainment viewing experience to visually impaired customers through NuEyes’ virtual reality technology. The Xfinity Stream app is now available on the NuEyes e2 smartglasses and VR magnifying device that enhances the usable vision of a person who is visually impaired. Xfinity Stream is pre-installed on NuEyes e2.
Audience intelligence and data-management platform Tru Optik announced a partnership agreement with JamLoop, a streaming TV and video advertising buying platform, to offer audience-based targeting capabilities for media buyers. “With OTT fast becoming the main form of professionally produced television consumption in the U.S., local and national advertisers are developing new media buying strategies to reach consumers within this landscape,” said Frans Vermeulen, COO of Tru Optik. “JamLoop’s proprietary buying platform – which now integrates Tru Optik Identity Resolution and OTT Data Marketplace – provides these advertisers with the ability to buy targeted, measurable and brand-safe premium video inventory, as well as offering transparency regarding audience reach and frequency during and after campaigns have run.” 
Hotstar, the Indian market’s Disney-owned streaming platform , now counts over 400 million app downloads, with twice as many downloads this year than in 2018. Hotstar credits its coverage of the Indian cricket league IPL as a big audience driver.
CuriosityStream announced it is now serving over 10.5 million paying subscribers . The new “bundled” carriage model includes a rapidly-growing distribution affiliate base with distribution partners including Millicom in Latin America, StarHub in Singapore, Altice and Suddenlink in the US, Airtel in India, Liberty Global/Flow in the Caribbean, Multichoice’s DStv in Africa, Sky TV in New Zealand and Totalplay in Mexico.

NBCUniversal has already drawn over $1 billion in national TV advertising for the Tokyo Summer Olympics, and is on pace to top the $1.2 billion it totaled for the 2016 games in Rio. “There’s less and less big places where people gather. Sports is one of those places where people absolutely do gather,” said Mark Marshall, President of Ad Sales and Partnerships, on a conference call with journalists. “Sports continue to bring large audiences together.” NBC began selling inventory during the upfront sales period.

Univision was the #2 broadcast net last Thursday for the entire night among A18-34, with live coverage of the 2019 Liga MX Apertura Semifinals averaging 1.8 million Total Viewers 2+, 937,000 A18-49 and 410,000 A18-34. It was also the third most-watched program on broadcast television. 
Fox News Channel had its highest-rated year in primetime in its 23-year history , with 2.5 million viewers, finishing the year as the most-watched network in basic cable for the fourth consecutive year in both primetime and total day (1.4 million) among total viewers, according to Nielsen.
In syndication ratings for the week ending December 1 , many, but not all, shows were able to exclude the very low-rated Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday from their averages. Game shows were hit hard, with Jeopardy (5.9, down 6%), Family Feud (new season low 5.3, down 10%) and Wheel of Fortune(new season low 5.2, down 17%) all losing ground. Among the major rookies, The Kelly Clarkson Show (1.4, up 8%) was the highest rated new show of the season for the 12th week in a row, drawing approximately 2.0 million daily viewers.
The premiere of the Bounce original movie Greyson Family Christmas reached over one million Total Viewers on Sunday, December 8. The premiere telecast at 9p also delivered 388,000 HHs, 173,000 P18-49 and 178,000 P25-54. The net’s Every Day But Christmas on Sunday, December 1 also topped one million Total Viewers.
The week of December 8, UniMas for the seventh consecutive week delivered double-digit year-over-year audience growth during primetime among Total Viewers 2+ (+42% to 571,000), A18-49 (+48% to 267,000) and A18-34 (+26% to 103,000).
