After twelve high-profile seasons as an American Idol sponsor, AT&T cut bait for season thirteen of the Fox singing competition, launched Wednesday. Ford and Coca-Cola are still onboard. The show’s season thirteen premiere was a solid number one in viewers (15 million) and A18-49 (4.7 rating/13 share), up from last season’s finale but a premiere low.
NBCUniversal is friending Facebook for the Olympics. “Building off our successful collaboration for the London Olympics, we have expanded our relationship to better serve Olympic fans’ insatiable appetite for Games’ content,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics. The NBC Olympics Facebook page will feature video content, up-to-date info, polls and photo galleries.
Discovery Communications made the 2014 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list. “While each company is unique,” said China Gorman, Global CEO of Great Place to Work, “what they have in common are strong cultures that support positive workplaces.” Among the perks at various Discovery locations: an on-site child care center, Wellness Centers staffed by doctors and an employee stock purchase program.
A+E Networks‘ AETV.com has been relaunched as a “first of its kind digital experience,” developed with a focus on TV Everywhere, mobile consumption and social TV. Said Dan Suratt, EVP, Digital Media and Business Development, “The new AETV.com is an original site unlike anything a cable TV network has ever produced. It’s a great representation of A&E’s new brand promise to ‘Be Original’.”
CBS is the first major broadcaster to sign on for Rentrak‘s Advanced Demographics Ratings Service. “As more advertisers move beyond age/sex demographics for their media buying, there’s been a shift to combine viewing data with product-purchase data to create comprehensive evaluation tools,” said David F. Poltrack, Chief Research Officer, CBS Corporation. “Rentrak’s analytical solutions provide a single-source framework that will lead to more effective use of the television medium and, more importantly, to the documentation of that effectiveness.”
In line with its plan to move to a skyscraper planned for NYC’s Hudson Yards area, Time Warner announced the $1.3 billion sale of the space it owns in the ten-year-old Time Warner Center. “By consolidating our space to Hudson Yards,” said TW CEO Jeff Bewkes, “we will be able to reallocate substantial savings to our primary business of creating and sharing great storytelling in television, film, and journalism with audiences around the world.”
The Governor of Georgia, Nathan Deal, declared this Sunday, January 19, “The Town That Came A-Courtin’ Day” in his state. The UP movie, premiering that night at 7p and based on a novel by Georgia native author Ronda Rich, “depicts the tradition of Georgia storytelling at its best,” reads the commendation. UP Network is headquartered in Atlanta.
ABC‘s Jimmy Kimmel Live is hitting Austin, Texas for a week of shows starting Monday, March 10. The visit is timed with the 28th annual South by Southwest (SXSW) music, film and interactive festival. Said Kimmel, “I’ll be the guy covered in BBQ sauce.”
Also seeing Austin action will be Andy Cohen, with Bravo‘s Watch What Happens Live for five shows. “We love Austin and can’t wait to return,” said Cohen. “Texas forever!”
Showtime‘s Years of Living Dangerously debuts Sunday, April 13 at 10p. Produced by James Cameron, the docu-series features A-listers like Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Matt Damon traveling the world to explore the issue of climate change.
New Showtime series Penny Dreadful, starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett, premieres Sunday, May 11 at 10p. The psychosexual thriller reimagines iconic figures from literature like Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula.
Bravo is serving up another helping of Top Chef: the net greenlit Top Chef Extreme, with former chef’testants competing against each other. Expect to be served the Magical Elves production in summer 2014.
Season six of Showtime‘s Nurse Jackie debuts Sunday, April 13 at 9p, followed by the seventh and final season of Californication at 9:30p.
Hot properties: HGTV has a slew of new episodes ready for real estate junkies. Love It or List It returns Monday, February 17 at 9p; the Renovation Raiders are ready to turn spaces from drab to fab on Thursday, March 6 at 8p; fresh Property Brothers come back starting Wednesday, March 12 at 9p, and House Hunters Renovation returns Saturday, March 22 at 10p.
The second seasons of FXX comedies Legit and Ali G: Rezurection bow Wednesday, February 26 at 10p and 10:30p.
Mexico’s Canal Once is premiering season two of political debate show Habla de Frente on Saturday, January 18 at 5p.
Ovation brand restaurants are partnering with comedy The Middle for a “Lights. Cameras. Vacation!” sweepstakes promotion (prize: a VIP trip to Hollywood). “We see this as a true win-win opportunity for our local stations, to garner increased visibility and viewership for the show in their market,” said Susan Kantor, EVP, Marketing, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, “and for Ovation Brands to offer their consumers a VIP experience at the legendary Warner Bros. Studio.”
Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order) has joined the cast of Fox event series 24:Live Another Day. Bratt will play the commander of the CIA operation pursuing Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland). Spy thriller premieres Monday, May 5 at 8p.
Season four of MTV‘s Awkward will include four new faces: Elizabeth Whitson (Pretty Little Liars), Kofi Siriboe (Prom), Evan Crooks (The Carrie Diaries) and Monty Geer, as recurring players. Teen drama bows Tuesday, April 15 at 10p.
Joan Allen will appear in the fourth and final season of Netflix drama The Killing, as the head of a military academy.

NBC is sending three comedies to pilot: Mission Control, a 1962 workplace comedy with Will Ferrell exec producing through Gary Sanchez Productions; True Jack Productions‘ Ellen More of Less, about a woman who lost 100 pounds, and relationship comedy Love Is Relative, with Tom Werner (Roseanne) exec producing. The net also ordered a pilot for Universal Television drama Salvation.
Showtime ordered two series, 10 eps each: Happyish, a comedy starring Philip Seymor Hoffman as a 42-year-old whose bosses are half his age (“and say the words ‘digital’ and ‘social’ far too often”), and drama The Affair, showing two sides of the effects of an extramarital affair, starring Joshua Jackson.
NickMom signed a development deal with Wanda Sykes (Alpha House) and producer Page Hurwitz of Push It Productions for a comedy project. Also on the roster for the mom-centered block on Nick Jr. (10p-2a) is a hidden camera series, Undercover Cupid (wt).
Canada’s Bell Media has signed local development rights for Banijay International reality property Opposite Worlds. A U.S. version launches on Syfy Tuesday, January 21 at 10p.
Competition from the American Idol premiere was evident in soft ratings for ABC‘s The Middle, which hit a season low 1.8/6 in A18-49, and a lower-than-usual Modern Family (3.2/9, still the night’s top scripted program in the demo). NBC‘s Revolution (1.3/4) and Law & Order: SVU (1.4/4) also posted lower ratings than the week prior.
The season five premiere of A&E‘s Duck Dynasty on Wednesday was the number one cable program of the night with a healthy 8.5 million viewers and 4.2 million A18-49, down from its fourth season average of 9.4 million viewers and 5.1 million A18-49 but up from the 8.4 million for its October finale.
A+E Networks’ Digital achieved new highs in 2013 in all key metrics. Across A&E, History, Lifetime and Bio websites and apps, Digital averaged 58 million monthly video views (+48 percent vs 2012), 30 million monthly unique visitors (+36 percent), and 46 million monthly visits (+43 percent). TV Everywhere Video Apps across iOS, Android, Kindle, Xbox and Roku were downloaded 10+ million times (to date); top performing series included Bates Motel, Duck Dynasty, Vikings, Pawn Stars, Project Runway and Dance Moms.
ABC daytimer The Chew returned from a two-week hiatus to record all-time weekly highs in total viewers (3.28 million) and W25-54 (774,000/1.3 rating tied week of 12/9/13). Versus a year ago, the cooking talker was up 41 percent in viewers, 38 percent among W18-49 and up 44 percent among W25-54.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX grabbed the most A18-49 viewers Wednesday with 4.7/13, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Fox’s American Idol averaged 4.4/14 in the first half of its two-hour premiere to top 8p, followed by a 1.7/6 average for ABC comedies The Middle and Suburgatory. Idol jumped to 5.0/14 at 9p, with CBS’s Criminal Minds taking second (2.4/7). CBS’s stepped into first at 10p with CSI (2.0/6), versus 1.5/4 for NBC’s Chicago PD.

Mark H. Cohen, former Executive Vice President of ABC Broadcast Group and former Vice President of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., died on December 31. He was 81. Cohen joined ABC in the company’s clearance department in 1958.
Actor Russell Johnson died January 16 of kidney failure. He was 89. Best known as the Professor on Gilligan’s Island, also appeared on shows such as The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
