The Supreme Court has agreed to settle the matter of broadcasters versus Aereo, which streams live over-the-air programming for a fee. If broadcasters succeed in shutting down Aereo, said CEO Chet Kanojia, “the consequences to consumers and the cloud industry are chilling.” Broadcasters, of course, have different take. “We believe that Aereo’s business model, and similar offerings that operate on the same principle, are built on stealing the creative content of others,” said a CBS statement. Fox‘s statement, on behalf of several nets, declared,“We are confident the court will recognize that this has never been about stifling new video distribution technologies, but has always been about stopping a copyright violator who redistributes television programming without permission or compensation.”
Limited series The Assets was more limited than planned – ABC has yanked the eight-ep spy drama after just two airings. The show’s Thursday, January 2 premiere had a .7 rating in A18-49, falling to a .6 and 2.9 million viewers in week two. Go-to fill-in Shark Tank encores will take its place for three weeks, starting January 16.
The weather war is getting bitter. With its carriage deal with The Weather Channel set to expire Tuesday at 12:01a, DirecTV placed WeatherNation channel next to WC on its lineup, claiming it had gotten “numerous customer complaints” about WC’s reality programming. On Saturday at the TCA press tour, WC’s David Clark hit the hard ball back, warning against counting on information from a “fly by night alternative… You’re going to be putting your audience at risk.”
The White House responded on Friday to a petition denouncing a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live in October, in which a child jokes about killing Chinese people to erase the U.S. debt (and for which Kimmel and ABC apologized). “The Federal government cannot force ABC to remove this show,” said the administration’s statement. “The First Amendment of the Constitution protects free speech.”
The State Department issued a travel advisory Friday, warning Americans planning to attend the Olympics in Sochi to take precautions, particularly on public transportation. The alert comes after three suicide bombings, two in December, targeting public transport in Volgograd. Five NBC Universal nets will be carrying 539 hours of live coverage from the Winter Games starting Thursday, February 6.
The 45th Annual NAACP Image Awards, honoring diversity in the arts and celebrating the promotion of social justice through creative endeavors, has 21 categories for television nominees. BET scored the most noms (19), followed by CBS (16) and ABC (15). Outstanding comedy series nods went to Real Husbands of Hollywood, Modern Family, The Game, House of Lies and The Soul Man. Drama nods went to Scandal, Grey;s Anatomy, Boardwalk Empire, Treme and The Good Wife. Awards will be telecast on TV One Saturday, February 22 at 9p.
Speaking of the Image Awards Not only did BET‘s first original scripted series, Being Mary Jane, get off to an impressive ratings start with an average 3.3 million viewers tuning in Tuesday to the Mara Brock Akil drama, on Friday the show received three NAACP Image Award nominations (Brock Akil’s The Game received five nods). Mary Jane airs Tuesdays at 10p.
Ahead of its Kitten Bowl, a Super Bowl counter-programming event, Hallmark has launched Feline Fantasy League. The app, housed on Hallmark Channel USA’s Facebook page, offers a live kitten cam, digital interactive playing cards and adoption stories. Kitten Bowl airs Sunday, February 2 at 12p.
Don’t tell the kittens: Nat Geo Wild is getting into Super Bowl Sunday action with Fish Bowl, starring… a goldfish, swimming around its bowl, “without filters and with remarkable candor.” Four-hour special airs February 2 from 6p-10p.
FX is relaunching its DVD On TV as FX Movie Download, delivering interviews with filmmakers, insider quotes and exclusive material not always available on DVD. “This series is a natural extension of the FX Has the Movies brand,” said Chuck Saftler, FX Networks COO, “and acknowledges consumers’ greater adoption of enhanced viewing experiences.”
More special FX: the net is sponsoring a contest for aspiring rappers, now through Wednesday, January 15, in support of tonight’s 10:30p launch of animated comedy Chozen, about “a gay white rapper fresh out of prison.” Winner gets the chance to record tracks in an NYC music studio.
Pivot renewed Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s HitRecord on TV for a season two, announced net president Evan Shapiro at the TCA winter press tour Saturday, a week before the variety show’s January 18 premiere. Shapiro also reported Meghan (daughter of John) McCain will co-host late-night series TakePart Live with Jacob Soboroff, but told The Wrap that McCain’s show, Raising McCain, is going off the air, along with docu-series Jersey Strong. As for Strong, “We felt we told a complete story,” Shapiro told The Wrap, and more seasons would require falling into the “trap of reality television, which is scripted manipulation in order to make it dramatic.”
Syfy and Google+ are offering fans a chance to interact with the net’s Being Human stars at the Google+ Hangout tonight from 8:30p-10:30p. Season four of the supernatural series debuts at 9p.
