Good morning. It’s Monday, November 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
William Shatner (Brown Bag Wine Tasting) kicked off the second annual Cynopsis Model D Digital Awards in New York City on Friday via video. The show awarded 46 of the best and most innovative content, branded campaigns and digital technology in the industry today, with honors going to companies as diverse as Tiny Riot, Corbis Entertainment, OMD, and PBS Digital.
The energy in the room was lively, thanks to the presenters which included Buzz60 host Jen Markham, YouTube’s Mark Malkoff, Fandango’s Reel Kids host Dan Perrault, and Teachers Lounge stars and creators Ted Alexandro and Hollis James. “Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it,” Alexandro opined, quoting David Lee Roth in a random homage that continued throughout his segment. Augie, Alone series creator Augie Praley tried to recapture the Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie with the audience, later joking that only his mother favorited his Tweet. On the other hand, Mark Malkoff brought a video in which he quizzed Times Square tourists on everything from ROI to vanity metrics, while Perrault’s video had him begging an 11-year-old girl for help in preparing to be a presenter. Her only piece of advice? That he enter and exit the stage to Taylor Swift’s hit Shake It Off, which he did.

Conde Nast Entertainment signed YouTube celeb Kandee Johnson (2.4 million subscribers) as its lead beauty contributor. CNE will be in charge of her ad sales and will seek out branded content opportunities for Johnson as well, including multiple series on CNE’s The Scene platform. She was featured in CNE series Beauty ReCovered for Glamour earlier this year.
Netflix is reportedly about to save another cancelled TV series, Longmire, according to Deadline. The streaming service is negotiating with Warner Horizon for a fourth season of the crime drama, which originally aired on A+E for three seasons until being cancelled earlier this year. The series garnered 5.5 million viewers on average, who tuned into the second and third season. Netflix also revamped Arrested Development and AMC’s The Killing.
AOL is looking for the next host of an unnamed sports show, and asking for video auditions through Vine, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #AOLSportsSearch. Those interested can also attend an in-person audition in Los Angeles or New York City today: submissions will close at noon online. Finalists will be announced tomorrow, Nov. 18, with a winner named on Nov. 19. The show will stream on the AOL Sports channel.
Digital talent management company Big Frame announced the addition of 11 creators to its stable of YouTube talent. They are: StyleHaul beauty and fashion gurus That’s Heart, Arden Ricks (aka Arden Rose) and Aspyn Ovard along with comedy and lifestyle creator Lauren Luthringshausen (aka Lauren Elizabeth), Ava Gordy and Kevin Droniak (aka This Kid Needs Medicine); SDK sketch group members Josh Sobo, Jonah Green and Ryan Abe; artist Mary Doodles and Maker Studios gamer Lisa Malambri. “These key signings deepen our roster of female lifestyle creators and also establish a cornerstone for comedy talent at Big Frame,” Co-President Larry Shapiro said.
Hasbro has called off the possibility to acquire DreamWorks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As previously reported, DW wanted $30 a share, a sharp increase from the stock originally trading at $22 a share. The companies collaborated on the Shrek and Kung Fu Panda movie franchises and toy merchandise in the past. Additionally, DW is talking to Hearst to sell a 25 percent stake in its YouTube channel AwesomenessTV, which would cost Hearst $81.25 million.
BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders third season will come exclusively to U.S. Netflix subscribers after premiering on the British network. The first season of the gangster period series hit Netflix on Sept. 30, and the second season was just made available on Friday.
People Now, the daily live online show presented by Toyota on People.com, announced that Willow Shields (The Hunger Games), basketball icon Yao Ming, Bella Thorne (Shake It Up), artist Chris Young, Bethenny Frankel (The Real Housewives of New York City) and others will make guest appearances this week. The 20-minute program offers exclusive interviews, celebrity and entertainment updates, and news and human-interest stories Monday-Friday at 8:30a ET.
A new online video and entertainment focused industry body called the Streaming Video Alliance, formed on Friday to “facilitate the creation of architecture, standards, and best practices that will scale the infrastructure for online video and improve efficiency for all providers” and provide consumers with quality programming. Launch members include: Charter Communications, Cisco, Comcast, Epix, Fox Networks Group, Level 3 Communications, Liberty Global, MLB Advanced Media, Telstra, Ustream, Yahoo and others. However, Netflix and YouTube platforms that account for half of all web traffic in North America (Sandvine) have not yet joined the board.
Disney is ramping up its mobile efforts and announced the Disney Movies Anywhere app will be available on Walmart’s VUDU web service this Tuesday and Maker Studios’ biggest creators will get their own stand-alone video apps. Disney Movies Anywhere is also available on iTunes, Google Play Roku, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with the ability to view a purchased title on all platforms now including Walmart’s platform. PewDiePie, Shay Carl, Stampy Cat and seven other Maker big players will get their own apps for their vids that will begin rolling out soon.
Facebook announced in a blog post Friday that it will reduce the number of organic brand posts in users’ newsfeeds in January, if they “feel too promotional,” according to specific criteria:

The movie comes as a way to keep users happy by getting rid of clutter not relevant to them. A brand can still continue to reach consumers without the FB paid option if a user opts in by liking the company.
