IN THE NEWS

Sony Network Entertainment International unveiled cloud-based TV service PlayStation Vue, allowing users to access live TV and on-demand content without cable or satellite service. An invite-only beta starting this month will offer content from 75 networks, from companies including Discovery Communications, CBS, Fox, NBCUniversal, Scripps and Viacom. Commercial launch is slated for 1Q15.

A musical based on the Duck Dynasty clan is in the works. (Really.) The New York Times reports The Duck Commander Family Musical, with actors playing members of the Robertson clan featured on the A&E reality show, is being developed by Broadway producer Michael David (Jersey Boys), for a Las Vegas run. “The Robertsons are so unusual, their story so juicy, and theater shouldn’t be limited to telling stories about people you resemble or revere,” David told the Gray Lady. Said Willie Robertson, “We’ve enjoyed the process of making a musical alongside the team who is interested in telling the Robertson family story from an outside perspective.”

Elisabeth Hasselbeck will return to her Fox &Friends seat bright and early this morning, a month after an abrupt exit to recover from surgery. “Full of #gratitude to be back,” the co-host tweeted yesterday.

Perception won’t make it to season four on TNT. Star Eric McCormack tweeted Thursday, “A sad day: Daniel will lecture no more. Thank you #Perception fans, and our great crew, for 3 amazing seasons. Shoulda been more….”

Noting that the growing penetration of devices are “fundamentally changing the industry,” Nielsen global digital product leader Megan Clarken acknowledged in a blog post Thursday the need to create total measurement of all content and all ads, regardless of how they are accessed. A new set of ratings standards would include Total Audience, combining the audience regardless of mode of access, including SVOD, and Total Commercial, measuring the ad campaign “regardless of where and how it’s consumed, providing flexibility for dynamic ad insertion.”

Industry standards about neutrality and professionalism have led to a sameness that reads as generic, according to a new study released by TruthCo., “The Next News Industry.” Said TruthCo. CEO Linda Ong, “News has been an integral part of people’s every day lives since the first broadcast in the early 1900s. The need for news never changed, but the ways we consume and relate to it are constantly evolving.” Ready, set, CBSN?

The ATX Television Festival will feature cast members, creators and writers from Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003) and Gilmore Girls (2000-2007). Event takes place June 4-7 in Austin.

Latin Grammy winner Juan Fonseca and jazz virtuoso Jon Batiste have collaborated on “Rise Up,” a song for Fusion that serves as the official anthem of net’s cross-platform RiseUp coverage. The net hosts its RiseUp summit November 19 in Washington, D.C.; proceeds from the song will be donated to Unicef.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The first season of Netflix’s $100 million drama The Crown will premiere in 2016. The plan: Each season will chronicle the intrigues in a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. “The Crown is storytelling that lives somewhere between television and cinema from Britain’s foremost chroniclers of modern politics, class and society,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content.

UK’s Arrow Media announced production of a special for Channel 4 to air later this year. Britain’s Wildest Weather 2014 tells the stories behind hurricanes, tornados, sink holes and sea foam.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 24 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. Hallmark Channel is counting down to Christmas with two original holiday premieres this weekend: Northpole on Saturday, November 15 at 8p, and Angels and Ornaments Sunday, November 16 at 8p.

Former Mythbusters Kari Byron and Tory Belleci return to Discovery to four-peat as hosts of Punkin Chunkin: Superchunk!, simulcast on Science Channel on Saturday, November 29 at 8p. RETURNING SERIES

Netflix
will launch season two of The Fall in the U.S. on Tuesday, January 6. The crime drama began its sophomore run across the pond last night on BBC Two.

CASTING

Kathryn Hahn
(We’re the Millers) has been cast as the female lead in the new pilot for Showtime comedy Happyish. Hahn had the same role in the original pilot, opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose shocking death in February put the project on hold. Steve Coogan (Philomena) stepped into the role Hoffman was to play. The pilot will be shot in New York next month.

Poppy Drayton (When Calls the Heart) will star in upcoming MTV drama Shannara, based on the fantasy book series by Terry Brooks. Sonar Entertainment is producing.

Lizzie Brochere (American Horror Story: Asylum) joins FX thriller The Strain, prepping for season two.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Tylenol and GSN are teaming for a cross-platform campaign celebrating memorable moments from game shows past. As part of the six-month effort, which includes short-form on-air and digital content, brand micro-site and social extension, Tylenol is exclusive sponsor of “Throwback Thursday” programming and a “Game Show Flashback” special. “The unique content that we created as part of this partnership is a fun way for us to connect with our consumers who have relied on our brand and cherished this type of programming throughout their lives,” said Jennifer Callaghan, senior brand manager for Tylenol.

Peace Point Rights acquired worldwide sales rights to documentary feature In Space, chronicling the last 50 years of space exploration. Included: first footage of the Rosetta Space Mission comet landing.
