The comedy Expelled, starring Vine creator Cameron Dallas (6.1 million followers, 2.8 million on YouTube) will make its theatrical debut on Dec. 12, courtesy of AwesomenessTV. Dallas plays a character who’s kicked out of high school for pulling too many pranks. The cast also includes other YouTubers and Viners, such as Andrea Russett, Lia Marie Johnson, Marcus Johns, Michelle Glavan and Teala Dunn. The film will then quickly move to cable and VOD, on Dec. 30.

National CineMedia rolled out the Shazam music discovery service on 20,000 movie screens across the country during NCM’s FirstLook pre-show program. Moviegoers can turn on the Shazam app in theaters during FirstLook spots featuring Maria Menounos for a chance to win Movies for Life, see the extended version of the latest RadioShack campaign featuring Weird Al, and download songs from AEG artists.
Over the weekend, YouTube celeb Shane Dawson (12 million subscribers) took the top prize on Starz reality competition series The Chair for his feature film Not Cool. Starting today, the ten-episode season will be sold on iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play and other digital platforms. The crown, however, didn’t come without controversy. Viewers chose between two versions of the same script: Dawson’s and one by fellow filmmaking contestant Anna Martemucci. But Chair producers and mentors Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story: Asylum) and Christopher Moore (American Pie) had earlier yanked their support from Dawson’s production, deeming it too “raunchy”; Quinto also called the film “a vapid waste of time.” Dawson sloughed off the criticism. “People are out of touch with what teenagers are interested in,” he said. “I wasn’t making a movie for middle-aged people writing about TV.”
The American Music Awards pre-show, aka Coca-Cola Red Carpet LIVE! @ The 2014 AMAs, will stream online on Yahoo at yahoo.com/live, as the official digital distributor of the AMA’s. The red carpet preshow starts at 5p ET, before the AMAs in Los Angeles on Nov. 23 at 8p ET on ABC. The show is hosted by Lance Bass, Chelsea Briggs, Kandi Burruss, Gavin Degraw and others and features performances by artists including Becky G, Ella Henderson, Katy Tiz, Mary Lambert, and R5.
People Now, the daily live online show presented by Toyota on People.com, announced that Biz Markie (Yo Gabba Gabba!), Nelly (Nellyville), Fred Savage (The Wonder Years), Gail Simmons (Top Chef), Donald Faison (The Exes) and others will make guest appearances this week. The 20-minute program offers interviews, celebrity and entertainment updates, news, and human interest stories Monday-Friday at 8:30a ET.
Why did Facebook make its 1.3 billion users download a separate messenger app last month? “On mobile, each app can really focus on doing one thing well, we think, and the primary focus of the Facebook app today is News Feed,” Mark Zuckerberg explained at a meeting at FB headquarters last week. “We saw that the messaging apps that people were using and relied on most were dedicated, focused experiences.” FB also launched a SnapChat-esque photo-sharing app called Slingshot, and more recently introduced Rooms, an online interest community.

For Veterans Day, Dreams Resorts & Spas and digital creative agency Forge Apollo (a Cynopsis Model D Awards nominee for their series Technium) rolled out a YouTube and Facebook campaign called Wounded Warriors. Ten veterans’ mothers were interviewed and then surprised with free vacations to thank them. Dreams is now extending the promotion to ten more people; stories can be submitted to Dreamers Giveaway online.

Entertainment marketing and rewards platform Viggle and Opera Mediaworks partnered for a new mobile ad technology called Add-to-DVR, for viewers to set up DVR recordings in real time by clicking on banner advertisements. “When DVRs were first introduced, they were seen as a threat to TV advertisers, because they allowed users to skip ads,” Opera Mediaworks President of Global Advertising Sales Scott Swanson said. “The Add-to-DVR ad unit enables networks to promote and drive consumers to view their programming easily, right from the ad itself.”
Viewers watched branded video programming more than 2.9 billion times in Q3 2014, according to a new report from Visible Measures. The views are in part due to the World Cup and the launch of Apple’s iPhone 6. Almost 484 million views in Q3 were the results of campaigns from electronic brands, representing 16 percent of total views. The top five are:
1. Samsung’s “Original Introduction” (49.3+ million views)
2. Always’ “#LikeaGirl” (42.3 million views)
3. Visa’s “Checkout” (31.3+ million views)
4. Nike’s “The Last Game” (30.8+ million views)
5. Samsung’s “Milk Music: A New Way to Discover Music” (29.5+ million views)
Code and Theory hired three new senior executives: Kaplan Thaler as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer (formerly of Publicis) and Matthew Anderson as Partner and Global Chief Marketing Officer. Ross Maupin, the former Creative Director at Victoria’s Secret PINK, was appointed Group Creative Director; Laurent Pierre joins as Head of Engineering from DigitasLBi France.
Jessica Schell joined Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Film. She was previously executive Vice President of New Media and Digital Entertainment at Universal.
