AMC is bringing back Hell on Wheels for a fifth and final season of 14 episodes, but the series isn’t racing to the finish line. Seven eps launch in summer 2015 and the rest premiere the following summer, a strategy AMC also used to conclude Mad Men and Breaking Bad. In season four, the Western period drama is averaging 3.4 million total viewers in Live+3 and 965,000 among A18-49, Saturdays at 9p.

IN THE NEWS

On a different note: Buoyed by the success of Sound of Music Live!, NBC has Peter Pan Live! prepping for a December 4 telecast, The Music Man on deck for next year and is now mulling another live presentation, this time minus the music: military court drama A Few Good Men. The Broadway play by Aaron Sorkin-turned-1992-hit film focuses the trial of Marines accused of murder…

…But don’t count on Sorkin to write. “Never say never,” Sorkin told the Los Angeles Times about the final three episodes of HBO’s The Newsroom, “but I’m pretty certain I’m about to write my last three episodes of television.” Really? “I’ve loved every minute I’ve spent in television,” Sorkin told the paper. But “I’ve had much more failure, as traditionally measured, than success in television. I’ve done four shows, and only one of them was The West Wing.”

ABC put in a full-season order for freshman procedural Forever, but isn’t taking any more Selfies. The comedy, which had an initial 13-ep order, is slated to air on Tuesday; after that, its slot will be taken up by holiday specials through much of the season.

The autism community applauded Jerry Seinfeld for an interview on Friday’s NBC Nightly News in which he said he thinks he’s on the autism spectrum. “You’re never paying attention to the right things,” the comedian told Brian Williams. “Basic social engagement is really a struggle….I don’t see it as dysfunctional, I just think of it as an alternate mindset.” Hailing Seinfeld as a champion of people with autism, a statement from Autism Speaks, for which Seinfeld has done benefit work, said, “There are many people on the spectrum who can relate to Jerry’s heartfelt comments.”

The fifth season of NBC’s The Sing-Off will air as a two-hour holiday special, airing Wednesday, December 17. Nick Lachey returns as host of the a cappella competition, launched in 2009 as a four-part series. Last year’s champs, Home Free, had their album “Crazy Life” jump to number one on the country iTunes chart.

YouTube star Shane Dawson was pronounced the winner of Starz reality series The Chair on Saturday, but the crown didn’t come without controversy. Viewers chose between two versions of the same script: Dawson’s and one by fellow filmmaking contestant Anna Martemucci. But Chair producers and mentors Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story: Asylum) and Neal Dodson (American Pie) had earlier yanked their support from Dawson’s production, deeming it too “raunchy”; Quinto also called the film, “a vapid waste of time.” Dawson sloughed off the criticism. “People are out of touch with what teenagers are interested in,” he said. “I wasn’t making a movie for middle-aged people writing about TV.”

WGN America is breaking into the unscripted space next year with two new series. Wrestling with Death launches Tuesday, January 13 at 10p, focused on a family of morticians by day, and wrestlers by night (truly!). Outlaw Country follows clashes between two brothers in law enforcement, and two sibs suspected of crime sprees, starting Tuesday, February 24 at 10p.

Kroenske Sports & Entertainment, owner and operator of Outdoor Channel, acquired InterMedia Outdoors, where Sportsman Channel hangs its hat. Touting the transaction as  “highly complementary,” KSE said it plans to continue to operate the outdoor enthusiast nets separately, and “welcome the former InterMedia Outdoors team to the KSE family.”

Velocity’s live SEMA Show, a convention that attracts a crowd of 70,000 people from the auto industry and serves as a kind of Upfront event for the net, took place in Vegas last week. How’d it go? Velocity GM Bob Scanlon’s ready for a victory lap. “Our second year of Velocity Live proves we have the overwhelming support of the car community and viewers alike,” Scanlon tells Cynopsis. “Velocity’s top experts generated enormous fanfare from the sold out crowd.” Also on hand: NASCAR legends Ray Evernham and Jeff Gordon, who announced they reunited to restore a Busch Series car for a special ep of Velocity’s Americarna.

The Big Bang Theory is shrinking. Lego announced it’s releasing a set of figures from the CBS comedy, “geeky details” and all, part of its Ideas project. Legos fans post suggestions on a company web site, and projects with 10,000 voters are guaranteed an official review.
