NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
The executives behind Camp Takota and YouTube’s Fine Bros. formed Supergravity Pictures, a film studio specializing in full-length features and premium specials starring YT and digital celebs. Supergravity started shooting its first project, The Chosen, with YT creator Kian Lawley (2.8 million subscribers), Elizabeth Keener and Dayna Devon. Fine Bros. manager and producing partner Max Benator recently sealed deals with Nickelodeon and the Sundance Channel, and was the former head of production and development for Collective Digital Studio. Marc Hustvedt produced Camp Takota last year, in which top YT creators Hannah Hart, Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart topped the bill.

Netflix will adapt the A Series of Unfortunate Events book series by Lemony Snicket into an original series. The author, known for his elusive persona told The Hollywood Reporter (from an undisclosed location), “After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”
 
RLJ Entertainment
revealed a new subscription digital service, called Urban Movie Channel, to bring “urban-themed movies” content of various genres to the channel. RLJ’s One Village and Image independent feature film library will be included on the service; stand-up comedy from Kevin Hart and Charlie Murphy and documentaries will also appear on UMC. Subscribers can snatch a free trial until February; the monthly sub will go for $4.99 or $49.99 a year.
 
CBS News
will launch a video streaming service today. Expected to be called CBSN, the product will be headed by CBS News correspondents Jeff Glor and Elaie Quijano.
 
The Wall Street Journal debuted a daily series powered by TouchCast video technology called WSJ: Interactive, Driven. The show will offer relevant graphics, articles and websites to help guide viewers through the show, which covers trending and breaking news. WSJ Anchor and Reporter Sara Murray will host.

TV4 Entertainment rolled out a new digital channel called Motorland for auto enthusiasts. Motorland curates programming related to classic and modern cars, motorbikes and those personalities and characters prevalent throughout the history of car culture. The launch includes documentary titles Hunt Verus Lauda, Pike’s Peak- Race to the Clouds, Grudge Race, Dakar Rally – Frontline to Finish Line and car-themed TV series Magnificent Motorcars, Reality Rides and TT Legends. The channel will also contain original programming as time goes on. TV4’s Television Four Networks offers nine other digital channels.
 
Rooster Teeth premiered a new interactive web series, Ten Little Roosters, a murder mystery starring the RT staff. The first episode, released yesterday, asks viewers to pick out the killer. Participants must have a TR account; they can vote until the next ep is released on Nov. 11.
 
 

CONTENT MEDIA

 
Hulu
debuted exclusive interviews for the new Christopher Nolan movie Interstellar. The 13-minute ‘featurette’ includes Q&A’s with stars Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain.
 
The Weather Channel is holding a Winter #PrepRally today to prepare viewers for storm clouds ahead. The initiative spans all the net’s programming, with content like cold weather tips, advice for protecting pets and dressing the family for winter (sponsored by L.L. Bean).

Fox Networks launched the Stream It and Dream It Sweepstakes to promote its Fox Networks TV Everywhere platform. During the two-week promotion, viewers authenticate their service to sign into any Fox app and watch programming, which will enter them for a chance to win $25,000. The TVE platform includes FOX Now, FXNow, Nat Geo TV, BTN2Go and FOX Sports GO.

ADVERTISING
 

The Interactive Advertising Bureau launched the Digital Video Center of Excellence, a research and development arm focusing on digital video with Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Ad Sales Peter Naylor as Chairman. The group will produce research projects, digital-video advertising case studies, technical standards, creative showcases and best-practice guidelines. “Digital video is only in its infancy, and yet the combination of sight, sound, and motion has already taken the interactive marketplace by storm,” Naylor said. “The broader ecosystem needs a central organization that will be able to steer the digital video movement on a pathway toward even more expansion, and inspire greater commitment from marketers to both the video medium, as well as cross-screen campaigns.”

RESEARCH

 
Despite the industry buzz around digital entertainment downloads, consumers spent less on bringing TV and movies into their homes and on mobile devices this year. According to data from DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, people coughed up $3.92 billion on digital downloads in Q3, down 1.2 percent from the 3.97 billion the year prior. Overall digital spend on home entertainment decreased from $12.62 billion in 2013 to $12.5 billion in the first nine months of this year. However, consumer spending on subscription VOD services, like Netflix, increased 26 percent in the first nine months of 2014 from $2.33 billion last year to $2.94 billion.

IAB promoted Anna Bager to Senior Vice President, Mobile and Video. She will continue to supervise the IAB Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence.
 
ADARA appointed Jie Cheng as Chief Analytics Officer. She was most recently the Chief Analytics Officer at Acxiom Corporation.
 
InPulse Digital moved its U.S. offices to Miami to better serve its Latin American clients. InPulse manages social media accounts for popular Latino entertainment stars like Luisana Lopilato and soccer star Rafa Marquez.
