A+E Networks chairman Abbe Raven is retiring after 33 years at the company. In a letter to employees, Raven said she has decided to step down February 2. “My years here have been truly rewarding and exciting,” said Raven, who started as an assistant. “Together with many of you, I have had the privilege of helping to build what I believe to be the finest, most distinctive and most successful brands in the media landscape.” As “Chairman Emeritus,” the highly-respected Raven said she will serve when called upon as “ambassador and advisor,” as well as continue in the TV industry and on corporate and non-profit boards. Nancy Dubuc, who was promoted to president and CEO of A+E in April 2013 when Raven took the role of chairman, takes the reins.

IN THE NEWS

Fox
is pulling the plug on ratings-challenged Utopia. The $50 million social experiment format from John de Mol’s (Big Brother) Talpa Media tied a series-low .5 among A18-49 and 1.56 million viewers on Friday. MasterChef Junior repeats will air in the 8p timeslot.

AMC Networks
took their DirecTV case to the people on Sunday night. During The Walking Dead, AMC directed the satellite company’s customers to its KeepAMC.com website and hotline, where viewers were notified that AMC Networks’ carriage agreement expires midway through the current season of the monster hit. “Our goal is to continue our partnership, by renewing our agreement and extending our business relationship well into the future,” said a statement from AMC. “Unfortunately, DirecTV has not engaged in meaningful negotiations with us, which leaves us to doubt whether a timely renewal is possible.” Countered DirecTV, subscribers “will not miss any of this year’s new season of The Walking Dead or any other shows. AMC is contractually obligated to provide all its programming for several more months and we intend to renew our AMC partnership at a price that’s fair to our customers.” The last 2014 ep of Dead airs November 30; season five picks up in February.

Jay Leno will guest on NBC’s Tonight Show Friday, November 7, his first spot outside of a cameo since signing off as host in February. Leno receives the Kennedy Center’s “Mark Twain Prize for American Humor” in a broadcast Sunday on PBS. Leno’s next act: a 2015 primetime series for CNBC, Jay Leno’s Garage.

Censorship overseas continues, with Chinese media posting a draft of rules by the State Administrator of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television stating that the rules for foreign TV shows, which include a requirement that entire seasons of shows be approved by censors before any episode can air, apply to streaming content as well. Until now, shows have appeared just a day after foreign airing, if not sooner.

Telemundo
stations launched new half-hour early evening newscasts yesterday, part of a major investment by NBCUniversal that also included hiring 160 new employees, primarily in the news departments. “We want to be at the forefront of delivering Hispanic-Americans all across the United States the local news, weather and information they want,” said Valari Staab, president, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations.

Starz is offering multiplatform sampling of the first episode of upcoming limited series The Missing starting Saturday, November 8. Starz subscribers will also  be able to catch every new episode a week early, via On Demand and Starz Play app, with the final two shows available two weeks ahead of schedule. “This new scheduling strategy optimizes the value of our digital platform offerings as we increase viewer flexibility for viewing,” said David Baldwin, EVP, program planning, network operations for Starz.

PBS is adding 20 more hours of British drama to Masterpiece in 2015, some airing at 8p and some at 10p, in addition to the franchise’s regular Sunday-at-9p slot. ITV’s six-part mystery series Grantchester bows January 18 at 10p after Downton Abbey, and BBC Two/Masterpiece historical drama Wolf Hall debuts April 5. Also upcoming: The Manners of Downton Abbey, series three of Mr. Selfridge, a new adaptation of Poldark, starring Aiden Turner (The Hobbit) and drama Indian Summers. PBS said the audience for the 2014 season of Masterpiece is up over 100 percent from 2010 (thank you, Downton Abbey).

Travel Channel
launched its search for the next “Travel Channel Star!” on Monday. First prize in the three-round competition show, set for 2015 on Travelchannel.com, is a five-part series on the net’s digital platforms; entrants can attend a casting call in NYC or LA, or submit a video online at TravelChannelStar.com.

Canadian SVOD Shomi launches today, with shows including American Horror Story, Modern Family, Sleepy Hollow and The Strain. The streaming service from Shaw Media and Rogers Media has an $8.99/month price tag, and an eye towards beating Netflix to the punch with binge-worthy offerings.

Nat Geo Wild announced the second annual “Wild To Inspire” filmmaking competition, with the winner getting the opportunity to travel to Africa and document wildlife for the net. Submissions will be accepted on Vimeo through January 16.
