Facebook has petitioned the Supreme Court to decide whether tracking logged-out users via the “like” button violates the federal Wiretap Act. The act prohibits companies from intercepting electronic transmissions without the consent of at least one party. A lawsuit by users was dismissed in 2017, then revived after a ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Facebook said the battle over tracking “presents a question of critical importance” regarding “certain ubiquitous practices in the technology industry.”

With Georgia on their minds, a group of Democratic senators wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey urging them to ramp up efforts to combat political misinformation ahead of the Peach State’s runoff elections. The companies should “learn from” and improve on their prior efforts to stem the spread of false claims, said the lawmakers.

Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency could launch in January, according to the Financial Times. Libra will launch in the form of a US dollar-backed digital currency, eventually adding more fiat currencies to the basket of assets that back Libra’s value, said the report. The launch date will depend on when the Libra Association receives regulatory approval by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority.

Snap Inc. is adding a feature to Snapchat that promotes the posts it determines most “entertaining.” The social platform is encouraging users to adopt the new Spotlight feature by awarding $1 million a day through the end of 2020 to the top picks.

TikTok was handed another extension, until December 4, to arrange for a sale of its US operations to an American company. President Trump previously signed an order requiring a sale by Chinese owner ByteDance by November 12 – later extended to November 27 – citing concerns about privacy and national security. Lawyers for TikTok have called the order unlawful, and asked that it be overturned in court.

Elton John will take part in a livestream on TikTok starting at 11a PT on World AIDS Day, December 1, as part of a campaign to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. “HIV may seem a disease of the past, especially with COVID-19 in the headlines but it still affects everyone,” said John. “There’s a great line-up for our TikTok Live to break down the myths around HIV, talk about safe sex and ensure that young people know how to protect themselves and others.” The livestream is part of a partnership between TikTok and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

TikTok is also rolling out a “Skip All” option that enables users with photosensitive epilepsy to skip videos with effects like flashing lights that can trigger seizures. TikTok has already been placing warning screens on videos that could potentially be harmful. A statement from the Epilepsy Society, an organization that worked with TikTok on the feature, said it hopes “other platforms will follow TikTok’s lead in ensuring greater inclusivity.”

Tech entrepreneur Tony Hsieh died November 27, from injuries sustained in a house fire while he was visiting family. He was 46. “The world has lost a tremendous visionary and an incredible human being,” said Kedar Deshpand, CEO of Zappos, formerly headed by Hsieh. “We recognize that not only have we lost our inspiring former leader, but many of you have also lost a mentor and a friend.” Hsieh continued to run Zappos until earlier this year after selling it to Amazon in 2009, using some proceeds from the sale to regenerate the neglected Downtown area of Las Vegas.

National Geographic unveiled its Reimagining Dinosaurs AR activation on Instagram. The interactive feature enables people to see what dinosaurs looked like based on dozens of recent discoveries and is the first Nat Geo AR activation to take place underwater, with a deep dive into the Spinosaurus, the first known swimming dino.

Checkmate: with 62 million households in the game during its first 28 days, chess drama “The Queen’s Gambit” is the biggest scripted limited series to date on Netflix. The Scott Frank adaptation of the 1983 Walter Tevis book has been in the streamer’s top 10 in 92 countries, from Russia and Hong Kong to Australia.

Netflix is boosting its presence in New Mexico by expanding its ABQ Studios and committing to an additional $1 billion in production spending. The move will render ABQ Studios one of the largest high-tech and sustainable film production facilities in North America.

Hallmark Movies Now, Crown Media’s SVOD service, passed the 1 million subscriber milestone. Its annual holiday programming event, Movies & Mistletoe, launched October 23, has seen a 128 percent increase in installs.

Subscription streaming outlet AMC+ launched on Roku, bringing its $9/month bundle including programming from AMC, BBC America, IFC, Shudder, Sundance Now and IFC Films to the service.

Also at Roku, Estrella TV and Estrella News are now streaming on the Roku Channel. Both networks are operated by Estrella Media, the vertically integrated, multi-platform, Spanish-language media company.

Viant, a people-based advertising software company, has been granted a patent for “Internet Connected Household Identification for Online Measurement and Dynamic Content Delivery.” The technology, which has been integrated into its Adelphic Platform, enables Viant to identify an internet connected household. Once Viant has identified the ICH, it is able to associate which devices belong to that internet connected household. “With many devices and browsers limiting user signals and Connected TV becoming critical to media plans, the identification of the household is becoming even more important in the digital ecosystem, something we anticipated years ago when we filed for this patent,” said Tim Vanderhook, Co-Founder and CEO, Viant.
