IN THE NEWS

The Vikings saga will live on… on Netflix. The streamer has greenlit Vikings: Valhalla, a sequel to History’s Vikings. The new series will be set 100 years after the conclusion of the original show, which is set to debut its sixth and final season on December 4. Valhalla will be executive produced by Vikings creator Michael Hirst; Jeb Stuart will serve as writer and showrunner.

Spectrum Productions is evolving its brand identity. On Tuesday, Founder, CEO and Executive Producer Guy Nickerson announced that the studio is changing its name to Remedy Television + Branded. “Since we began 30 years ago, we’ve evolved as a company,” said Nickerson. “But one thing’s remained the same – our commitment to delivering great solutions through honest storytelling. This philosophy, along with our team’s passion and motivation to create and tell intriguing stories for our clients, is why changing our name to Remedy Television + Branded made the most sense.”

Ahead of the Democratic presidential primary debate airing on MSNBC , candidates Senator Cory Booker, Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren signed a letter, organized by leading national women’s organization UltraViolet, urging Tom Perez and the DNC to demand that Comcast/NBCUniversal outline concrete steps to address the culture that exists in newsrooms and corporate culture.

As part of Friends’ 25th anniversary celebration, Warner Bros. Television is teaming up with the Prop Store for Giving Tuesday. Props, costumes and production materials from Friends will go up for auction for the first time, with proceeds going to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. Joey’s original Hugsy doll will be up for grabs, as well studio-edition reproductions of the Holiday Armadillo costume, Central Perk couch and ten copies of Monica’s peephole door frame.

Netflix is headed towards all original programming – eventually. That’s what Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, told attendees at the Paley Center for Media’s International Council Summit in New York. “There is a lot of viewing that comes from licensed content from other people, because there is a lot of it. And for a while, it was all we had,” said Sarandos. As for original programming? “I think one way or the other, we end up there,” noted Sarandos.

With the 2020 election around the corner, MTV is launching the “+1theVote Campaign.” The year-long initiative will target first-time voters to help make voting a part of their identity and an experience to be shared with friends. The initiative sets its sights on the 60% of eligible voters who have never been invited to register. It will also be the first national effort to open new polling sites on college campuses and in local communities.

Female and minority TV directors reached a milestone this year, directing half of all episodic TV shows for the first time. According to the Directors Guild’s latest diversity report, that’s up from 2018’s record high of 42.5% and up from just 21% five years ago. “Inclusion has been a priority of our guild for a very long time as we’ve pushed the studios, networks and producers to do better in their hiring,” said DGA President, Thomas Schlamme. “While change had been glacial in past years, we’re pleased and incredibly encourage to see the recent commitment undertaken by the industry.” The percentage of episodes directed by women grew to a record 31%, while those directed by people of color rose to new high of 27%.
