11/20/19: NBC tapped Solomon to oversee production of the Olympics

 

Wednesday November 20, 2019
NBC Sports Group named Molly Solomon as Executive Producer and President, NBC Olympics Production & Executive Producer, GOLF Channel. She will report to Pete Bevacqua, President, NBC Sports Group. Solomon, who has worked 10 prior Olympics for NBC Sports, including as coordinating producer of the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony and primetime show, will oversee all day-to-day editorial production of NBC Olympics’ coverage of the Games, as well as Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA. She will continue to oversee production of NBC Sports Group’s GOLF Channel as well, a position she has held since 2012.
 
“As a broadcast partner at the PGA of America, and now as a colleague at NBC Sports, I’ve had a front-row seat watching Molly skillfully and creatively lead a tremendous GOLF Channel production team,” Bevacqua said. “We are excited to put oversight of our Olympic presentation into her exceptionally-qualified hands, and are especially proud to see a long-time and well-liked member of our NBC team return to her roots.”

PROGRAMMING

Monday Night Football out of Mexico City averaged 12,677,000 viewers on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, according to Nielsen to help ESPN win the night among all networks, broadcast or cable, in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos (18-34, 18-49, 25-54 and 55+). Through 12 games, MNF’s average audience of 12,604,000 viewers is up 6% season-to-date. ESPN Deportes Monday Night Football average audience of 101,000 viewers is up 22% season-to-date.
 
Catching up on NFL viewership numbers:
  • NBC Sports saw the Bears/Rams matchup on Sunday Night Football average a Total Audience Delivery of 17.2 Million Viewers. Through 11 weeks (12 games), NBC’s SNF is averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 20.5 million viewers – the highest 11-week average for the series since 2015, and up 4% over the same point last season.
  • FOX Sports is reporting that its season-to-date NFC package is averaging 18,386,000 viewers to rank as the network’s best since 2016. FOX NFL Sunday is averaging 4,811,000 viewers, up 4%.
  • CBS Sports’ national 4:25p game window scored in Week 11 on Sunday with the highest-rated NFL game telecast on any network this season with a 14.0/29 average national household rating/share, up 4% from last year. Through 11 weeks of the NFL season, The NFL on CBS’ season-to-date viewership hit its best in three years, up 7% compared to last year.
ABC’s presentation of Saturday Night Football featuring Oklahoma’s epic comeback over Baylor propelled the network to gains as the Big 12 battle averaged 6,785,000 viewers for a 74% audience markup over last year’s window. Keeping it in the family, ESPN’s telecast of LSU/Ole Miss averaged 2,626,000 viewers. All four of ESPN’s Nielsen-rated networks saw audience increases in the noon window: ABC up 29%, ESPN 18%, ESPN2 44% and ESPNU 25%. The two biggest audiences across these networks were on ABC and ESPN, as Indiana at Penn State (ABC) generated 2,934,000 viewers, while Alabama at Mississippi State (ESPN) earned 2,489,000 viewers.
 
The SEC on CBS scored with Georgia/Auburn as the matchup drew a 4.0/10 average national household rating/share, up 208% over last year’s comparable game. Through the first 12 weeks of the 2019 college football season, the SEC on CBS is averaging a 4.0/11 household rating/share, the Network’s best for college football at this point in the season since 1990, and up +38% vs. 2018.
 
FOX Sports’ punched up its viewership numbers for Sunday’s PBC Fight Camp : Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz Ep. 4 and Inside PBC Boxing, which nabbed all-time highs on FOX. PBC Fight Camp drew 2,438,000 viewers, up 8% over Ep. 1, while Inside PBC Boxing his 1,344,000 viewers, up 70%.
 
AXS TV named Max Bretos to serve as play-by-play announcer and Julianna Pe na for color commentary for the network’s English-language broadcasts of the world’s Hispanic Mixed Martial Arts franchise Combate Americas. The network also announced that it will present a trio of Best Of Combate Americas specials kicking off on Dec. 6 at 10p with a 60-minute preview of Tito Vs. Alberto – What Side Are You On? AXS TV is slated to air 35 live Combate Americas events in 2020 as part of the AXS TV Fights Friday Night primetime block. 
 
ESPN detailed plans for coverage of the NBA G League Games , running across ESPN+, ESPN2, ESPNEWS and ESPNU. ESPN+ will stream over 200 regular-season games live on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the season. ESPNU and ESPNEWS will broadcast games from the 2019 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase on Dec. 19 & 20 beginning at 3p and Dec. 22, at 2p. The showcase spans four days and features 28 regular-season games in a tournament format. The championship game will air on ESPN2 on Dec. 22 at 7p. In addition to the Winter Showcase, ESPNU and ESPNEWS will combine to televise the 2020 NBA G League Playoffs and Finals. The playoffs begin on Mar. 31 with the first round doubleheader broadcasting on ESPNU.
 
The Masters are changing their approach , and will have a new home in the UK. The Mirror reports that the tournament will shift fully to Sky Sports away from the BBC starting next year. The BBC will still show TV highlights and provide radio and online coverage.

ESPORTS

ESL is bringing ESL One powered by Intel to LA from March 20-22, 2020 at the Shrine Auditorium in Downtown Los Angeles, marking the first time that ESL will host a Dota 2 tournament on the West Coast. ESL One Los Angeles will also be the first Dota 2 Major in the United States since 2016. 16 teams will compete over their share of $1,000,000. In addition to the competition, fans will have the opportunity to experience side activities, including signing sessions with the teams and talents, a Dota artist area, and more.
