Good morning! It’s Thursday and this is your weekly Esports Brief.
Amid ongoing allegations and investigations against executives and staff members at Activision Blizzard, the Wall Street Journal published news this week that – despite claims to the contrary – company CEO Bobby Kotick was directly aware of harassment allegations against company leaders and did not inform the Board of Directors of the claims nor his role in dealing with them. In addition, subsequent reports claimed that Kotick also had multiple harassment claims against him. More recently, the article also states that despite touting moves to improve corporate culture, the news of newly appointed Blizzard co-lead Jennifer Oneal announcing her departure earlier this month was a result of being paid less than her male counterpart while being “tokenized, marginalized, and discriminated against” at the company.

As a result of the report, backlash grew as employees staged another walkout on Tuesday in protest of the news (an Activision response states that claims in the WSJ article were misconstrued) while a group of shareholders, led by union pension group the SOC Investment Group, called for the resignation of Kotick and the retirement of two other members of the board of directors: Brian Kelly and Robert Morgado. The board, meanwhile, issued a statement that they supported Kotick’s actions and recent decisions to change company culture. According to the corporate site, board members also include names such as Casey Wasserman, Dawn Ostroff, Peter Nolan, Barry Meyer, Hendrick Hartong III, Reveta Bowers and Robert Corti. Meanwhile, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan expressed his disappointment at Activision’s response. In an email sent to PlayStation staff, Ryan said he felt “disheartened and frankly stunned,” according to Bloomberg, and notes that Activision “has not done enough to address a deep-seated culture of discrimination and harassment.”

COMPETITION
A monster week for Halo fans as 343 Industries released a well-received game in Halo Infinite as well as its global plans for its competitive players, laying out plans into 2022, in partnership with Esports Engine, for a “global community of all different shapes and sizes, as well as various needs and characteristics that are endemic to that region.” Play begins with the previously-announced HCS Kickoff Major in Raleigh on Dec. 17. The Halo Championship Series will operate in four regions – North America, Europe, Mexico and Oceania with each region getting its own tournament organizer: Europe-DreamHack; Oceania/ESL Australia and Mexico/Gaming Partners. Each region will offer five tiers: online tournaments, Pros Series, Supers or Regional tournaments, Majors and the Halo World Championship. The new HCS format will offer two splits across regions that will include a regional in every region followed by a Major. A $3,000,000 prize pool will be up for grabs and supplemented by crowdfunding. Faceit will serve as host for all Official HCS online tournaments for Halo Infinite, integrating Faceit’s tournament APIs into Halo Infinite in the future. Faceit will also be investing in and launching the Faceit Pro League for Halo Infinite, in an effort to support the Halo community further and increase the depth of competition in the scene. Play will be simultaneously streaming to both Twitch and YouTube, with the main broadcasts being shown on the Halo channels.

Ubisoft revealed that the sixth edition of the World Championship of Rainbow Six Siege is returning to Montreal, running Feb. 8-20 next year. The company noted that it “will continue to monitor the global situation over the coming months and will reevaluate the option of a limited on-site audience in January 2022, should the local requirements and restrictions allow it.”

The NFL announced its 2nd annual Madden NFL 22 x HBCU Tournament with EA in a move to get all 48 HBCU colleges and universities in the SWAC, MEAC, SIAC and CIAA conferences to get involved and represent their schools with competition and networking. 16 finalists will participate in an “experienceship” by spending time with the EA staff to engage them in various departments, and they will tour the NFL’s new west coast headquarters and shadow NFL leaders for a day to provide development and networking experiences to the students. The NFL will partner with GCN to manage all operations including registration, online tournament execution, player communications, competitive integrity and a professional broadcast during the week of Super Bowl LVI.

SteelSeries revealed the inaugural SteelSeries Apex Legends Prime Cup. 20 teams from throughout the Americas (15 invited pro teams and 5 qualifier teams) will compete, live streamed on Twitch.TV/SteelSeries. Invitational teams include: SpaceStation Gaming, 100 Thieves, BenchWarmers, Complexity, Cloud9, Esports Arena, G2 Esports, Ghost Gaming, Noble, NRG, Sentinels, SignUsPlease, Team Liquid, TSM, and XSET.

Garena announced that the Free Fire World Series FFWS 2022 will take place in May 2022 after being cancelled to run this month due to pandemic issues. Qualifiers for FFWS 2022 will be held across multiple regions in the coming months, with play-ins starting May 14, while top teams qualifying for the finals begins on May 21.

Red Bull Flick announced a partnership with BLAST for the November pro-am Red Bull Flick Invitational, Helsinki. The culmination of the 2021 circuit, the event will give the top amateur duos from over 30 countries the chance to face CS:GO legends in a LAN event. BLAST will support the global finale of Red Bull Flick as the official production partner.

Next month sees the JBL Quantum Cup gaming tournament return, running Dec. 17-19. JBL once again partnered with ESL, as fans will be able to see the top names in esports, go head-to-head and will get the chance to play in the JBL Quantum Cup’s global Fortnite tournament. live on JBL’s Twitch channel and IGN.com (U.S. only) as well as IGN’s new, dedicated esports channel IGN Compete. “We are continually looking for ways to bring fans together with the best names in esports. Now in its second year, JBL is taking the JBL Quantum Cup to the next level by giving amateur gamers even more chances to play alongside the pros,” said Ralph Santana, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at HARMAN. “Fans wanted larger lobbies in the JBL Fortnite competition, so we delivered.”

STREAMHATCHET
A relatively new video game genre has risen in popularity lately: auto battlers. An auto battler is a strategic, chess-like game where players place characters on a grid-like battlefield during a preparation phase. Then, the characters battle enemies during a battle phase without any direct input from the player. Teamfight Tactics has been the predominant auto battler since its release in 2019. With the launch of the latest set (character update) for TFT, the game has now eclipsed its highest ever weekly viewership. So, should brands be looking at TFT as a promising opportunity to reach a different category of the video game audience?

· Riot Games, the developer/publisher of Teamfight Tactics, have created the game using the same characters from their MOBA title, League of Legends. Producing multiple titles with familiar characters allows Riot Games to expand on their growing universe and create affinity within their broader community. The Riot Games universe will likely continue to grow, generating parallels to something like the Marvel universe in the movie industry.
· Brands looking to target strategic, intelligent gamers might want to consider Teamfight Tactics as content during campaigns. And, of course, the best time to activate would be during new set launches when viewership is peaking.

Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro, announced two new Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drops in a crossover with Riot Games celebrating the launch of Arcane: League of Legends, the new animated series set in the League of Legends universe. “In RiotX Arcane, we looked for ways to bring the fandom of Arcane beyond the digital screen and into something you could hold in your hands,” said Brandon Miao, Cross-Product Experiences and Partnerships Lead, Riot Experience (XP) at Riot Games. “This was an amazing opportunity to collaborate with Secret Lair as we’re huge fans of Magic and admire the long-standing, deep relationship Wizards of the Coast has established with their fanbase.”

Speaking of which, Bud Light is officially partnering with Riot Games to support Netflix’s Arcane series. Ahead of the show’s finale, Bud Light gave away 30 limited-edition kits, including limited-edition Bud Light bottles, glassware and swag via the brand’s Twitter. ONE Esports entered into a partnership with global investment management organization, Franklin Templeton to introduce its brand and build awareness within the esports community. After nearly eight years off the air, G4 is back on linear television. Verizon Fios, Cox, Comcast and Philo are carrying G4 on their programming lineups at launch, bringing the network’s reach to more than 70 million homes including streaming outlets, with more than 10 million more to be added by year’s end.

Overwolf announced a $75 million Series D round, led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Previous investors including Griffin Gaming Partners, Insight Partners, Intel Capital, Liberty Technology Venture Capital, and Marker participated. The funding will be used to strengthen and grow the in-game creator ecosystem primarily through CurseForge Core, a “UGC as a Service” solution that enables game studios, IP owners and in-game creators to prosper with game creations.

Dubit, the games studio and developer of virtual worlds, raised $8 million to launch the world’s “first live esports league in the metaverse, starting in Roblox.” The funding round was led by Metaventures and French investor Jean-Charles Capelli, valuing Dubit at $55 million. The company will now expand its existing metaverse activity, introducing Metaverse Gaming League to pioneer branded gaming events and esports tournaments. Metaventures and Dubit are also creating consumer lifestyle experiences such as concerts and fashion shows for the metaverse.

INDUSTRY
The Game Awards announced its 2021 nominees with Deathloop, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, It Takes Two, and Psychonauts 2 leading nominations across the categories. This year’s list of nominees includes 107 different games, individuals, teams and events spanning across a multitude of gaming genres and platforms. In 2020, The Game Awards saw a record-setting 83 million livestreams, up 84% year-over-year. After taking a fully virtual format last year, The Game Awards will return as a live, in-person ceremony at the Microsoft Theater on Dec. 9, including the return of The Game Awards Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Valfe. The Game Awards will once again be distributed as a free global 4K UHD livestream to fans around the world across more than 40 global video, social and gaming platforms.

TEAMS

FlyQuest officially moved to offer more sustainable merchandise, fueling the move with a revamped website and a video detailing the reasoning behind the shift. All FlyQuest merchandise will now be made from 25% or more recycled and sustainable materials.

American professional poker player Dan (Jungleman) Cates became the latest name to invest in esports organization QLASH. Cates recently won his first World Series Of Poker bracelet. The move sees Cates become the latest poker personality to invest in the squad, joining Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Jeff Gross. QLASH was founded in 2017 by two former professional poker players: Luca Pagano and Eugene Katchalov. “The gaming and esports industry is constantly growing and, with further reflection, I believe it can be used for people to learn experientially,” said Cates. “It’s a business with a lot of potentials. I believe QLASH is a strong investment and I’m sure there are many strategic partnerships we can do and provide value”.

Following the recent merger of OpTic with esports and entertainment organization Envy Gaming, the combined company revealed the previously announced Envy Halo team set to compete in Microsoft’s Halo Championship Series launching in December will be rebranded as OpTic Halo. Envy was one of nine esports organizations initially invited to the HCS team partnership program, which is part of a relaunch for Halo esports competition coinciding with the Halo Infinite video game releasing December 8.

Complexity Gaming is returning to Rocket League, inking last year’s RLCS South American champions, True Neutral to its roster. The Complexity Rocket League team will make their official debut today in the RLCS Regional #3, which will be simulcast on Complexity’s official Twitch channel. “Signing this top-tier roster is the ideal way to make our return to Rocket League,” said Sören Vendsahm, General Manager and VP of Talent, Complexity Gaming. “The squad has proven their dominance in South America and amassed a wildly passionate fanbase. We’re looking forward to building on that foundation and helping the team to evolve into a top contender in North America.”

Complexity also announced a collaboration with Champion to launch a new streetwear line. The drop comes out today and will feature a limited-edition collection hoodie and sweatpants.
