Fenway Sports Group is reportedly about to buy controlling stake in the Pittsburgh Penguins, pending approval from FSG board members and the NHL according to multiple reports yesterday. FSG, led by billionaire John Henry, will assume ownership from Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, although Lemieux could reportedly retain a small portion of his equity. If the deal is approved, the Penguins would join sports brands that include the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park, Liverpool FC and Roush Fenway Racing in FSG’s portfolio.

In ratings news, the NFL continues its drive this season as CBS Sports’ NFL coverage saw the network’s national window – featuring Seattle and Green Bay – rank as the most-watched television program of the week with 22.705 million viewers. Overall, the doubleheader average was up 6% over last year’s comparable week, with Paramount+ also laying claim to its second-most streamed regular season week ever. Season to date, the network’s offering is averaging 17,357 million viewers, up 8%,
Meanwhile, FOX Sports reports that its singleheader this past week delivered 17.6 million viewers, up 69% over last year’s week 10 performance. In addition, week 10 ranked as the best performing week 10 in FOX Sports history, with an AMA of 589,454 for the franchise, up 23%.
In college football, week 11 saw ABC/ESPN lay claim to multi-year viewership highs to mark ESPN’s most-viewed week of the year. Overall, viewers watched 5.3 billion minutes of live games on Saturday, making it the most-watched day of the college football season across ESPN networks. ESPN platforms were responsible for 64% of the minutes watched in Week 11 and aired four of the top six most-watched games on Saturday. Michigan at Penn State was the most-viewed game of Week 11 across all networks with 5,942,000 viewers. It ranks as ABC’s most-viewed noon or afternoon game of the season and fifth-best game overall, while the 3:30p matchup of Purdue and Ohio State recorded 4,739,000 viewers on ABC, ESPN networks’ most-viewed game in the afternoon window since Week 1. Texas A&M at Ole Miss (3.5 million viewers, ESPN) and Notre Dame at Virginia (3.3 million viewers, ABC) helped ESPN and ABC rank as the top two networks in primetime among all viewers and all key male and adult demos for a second consecutive week.
CBS Sports’ presentation of Georgia’s 41-17 win over Tennessee averaged 5.781 million viewers, the second-most watched game in the series on record. It marked the fourth time Georgia-Tennessee surpassed five million viewers and the second year in a row. Paramount+ saw double-digit year-over-year growth in total streams, minutes streamed and unique viewers versus last year’s game.
Univision and Combate Global announced that the organization’s event last Friday garnered 679,000 Total Viewers 2+, including 340,000 viewers in the coveted A18-49 demographic, on Univision to generate the second-highest viewership for Combate Global in its four-year history with Univision. The live show on Friday was the highest-rated program on Spanish-language television in the U.S. in the timeslot, and the second-highest rated program on television in the timeslot, behind only NBA programming on ESPN.
ESPN2’s telecast of Friday night’s FIFA World Cup qualifying match – a 2-0 US Men’s National Team victory over Mexico – was seen by an average audience of 1.315 million viewers; making it the most-watched FIFA World Cup qualifying match on ESPN2, according to Nielsen Media. In addition, the audience for USA-Mexico ranks fourth overall in the history of World Cup qualifying matches on ESPN networks, behind USA vs. Panama on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, seen by an average audience of 1.437 million viewers on ESPN.
HBO acquired Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off, a feature documentary about the skateboarding legend from Mark and Jay Duplass’ Duplass Brothers Productions and director Sam Jones. The film will debut on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max in 2022. The show is directed by Sam Jones and executive produced by Mark Duplass, Mel Eslyn and Jay Duplass.
Telemundo kicked off its one-year countdown to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, with a preview of its coverage plans as the exclusive Spanish-language home of the tournament. The network is preparing to present the most ambitious multimedia coverage in Spanish-language history, with all 64 matches broadcast live, including 56 games airing on Telemundo and eight on Universo. For the first time, there will be in-venue presence for all 64 games, leveraging the proximity of the stadiums with commentators calling multiple matches in one day. There will also be more pre-game, halftime, and post-match coverage from onsite studios as well as all positions across the city of Doha. In addition, Telemundo will add more dedicated crews with a special emphasis on the most relevant teams for the U.S. Hispanic audience. Andres Cantor will return as chief commentator marking his 12th World Cup and his 10th as play-by-play announcer. Coverage will be anchored by Telemundo Deportes’ renowned teams who hosted the World Cup in Russia and Women’s World Cup in France: Miguel Gurwitz, Ana Jurka, Carlos Hermosillo, and Carlota Vizmanos.
Spotify announced that on Nov. 23, the podcast studio will debut an all-new original series “The Last Days of Maradona” – a new investigation into what happened during the last days of the iconic Argentinian footballer, Diego Armanda Maradona’s life. The investigation was led by Mariano Pagella from Adonde Media and accompanied by Spotify Studios. the series marks the first-ever Spotify launch in 6 markets simultaneously, each with their own host who will work with the investigative team to tell the story for Diego Maradona in their own words. The 11th Annual NFL HONORS – the primetime awards special that recognizes the NFL’s top players, performances and plays from the 2021 season – will run live on Feb. 10 at 9p on ABC, coming from YouTube Theater at the SoFi Entertainment District in Los Angeles. In addition to airing on ABC, the two-hour award show will be simulcast on ESPN+ and NFL Network.
CBS Sports announced its college football Saturday showcase for Nov. 27 at 3:30p, picking up the Iron Bowl, pitting Alabama and Auburn. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and reporter Jamie Erdahl will call the action from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.
The Cowboy Channel officially announced broadcast plans for the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as the event returns to Las Vegas. For 10 nights, the NFR, the “Super Bowl of Rodeo”, will showcase 10 rounds of professional rodeo competition with the top 15 cowboys and cowgirls in each event as they compete for their chance to win the gold buckle. Jeff Medders and Butch Knowles will return as the main hosts.
Athletes Unlimited announced that season two of its women’s professional volleyball league will kick off on March 16 and run for five weeks through April 16. In addition, the first 24 players of the 44-player roster have been signed, headlined by Athletes Unlimited champion Jordan Larson. In 2022, Athletes Unlimited Volleyball will return to the Fair Park Coliseum in Dallas, the site of season one, with matches to be played in front of fans for the first time. USA Volleyball will once again serve as a Strategic Partner of the league, while Starlings Volleyball, USA, will remain a Charitable Partner.
The NBA will play games in the United Arab Emirates next preseason, the league announced Tuesday. The NBA and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi have agreed to a multiyear partnership, starting with two preseason contests that tip off in Abu Dhabi in October 2022. The participating NBA teams and host venue will be announced at a later date.

Swerve TV announced the launch of Swerve Sports, a free movie network devoted to sports and the films that share stories behind the world’s most inspirational athletes. Swerve Sports is available free on channel 234 on The Roku Channel’s Live TV Guide. The channel will feature sports films such as When We Were Kings, which documents the epic 1974 Muhammad Ali heavyweight championship bout in Zaire as well as the acclaimed Murderball. Swerve Sports will feature premium movies at 8p every night. ESL Gaming locked in a partnership with 343 Industries to flesh out the international esports ecosystem for Halo: Infinite. ESL Gaming, through DreamHack and ESL Australia, was selected to be one of the tournament operators responsible for competitions within the Halo Championship Series (HCS) in 2021 and 2022. This HCS will feature four competing regions — North America, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. With a prize pool starting at $3 million (which will increase through crowdfunding). The DreamHack brand will produce the Regionals and Supers competitions in Europe in addition to hosting a North American competition on-site at DreamHack Anaheim, from Feb. 11-13. ESL Australia will operate the Regionals and Supers competitions in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ).

The NFL announced its 2nd annual Madden NFL 22 x HBCU Tournament with EA in a move to get all 48 HBCU colleges and universities in the SWAC, MEAC, SIAC and CIAA conferences to get involved and represent their schools with competition and networking. 16 finalists will participate in an “experienceship” by spending time with the EA staff to engage them in various departments, and they will tour the NFL’s new west coast headquarters and shadow NFL leaders for a day to provide development and networking experiences to the students. The NFL will partner with GCN to manage all operations including registration, online tournament execution, player communications, competitive integrity and a professional broadcast during the week of Super Bowl LVI.
