IN THE NEWS

Julie Bowen will headline and exec-produce a comedy for NBC. The “Modern Family” star also signed a first-look deal with Universal Television for her production company, Bowen & Sons. The series, an untitled project under a put pilot commitment, centers on a woman who, after losing her PR business in a divorce, returns home to help her father, an aging magician, save his storied Magic Manor from cancellation. Written by Steve Basilone (“The Goldbergs”), series will be exec-produced by Justin Willman, the magician from Netflix’s “Magic for Humans” alongside Basilone, and Bowen and her production partner Rachael Field. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Another podcast is making its way to television—this time from Dick Wolf. “Dark Woods,” a scripted podcast series from his Wolf Entertainment, is being adapted by Universal Television. The podcast, which stars Corey Stoll, Monica Raymund and Reid Scott, details the story of the suspicious death of a young park volunteer in the California Redwood Forest. Universal Television sister company UCP has adapted several podcasts to TV, including “Dr. Death” and “Joe Exotic” for Peacock, “Sam Esmail’s Homecoming” for Amazon and “Dirty John” for Bravo.

Simply Marvelous: Although a firm date for the series return in 2022 hasn’t been announced, Amazon released first photos of season 4 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Images depict a pensive Midge, played by Rachel Brosnahan, and more jovial Abe (Tony Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle) as they enjoy dinner in front of the television.

After heated negotiations that began six months ago, IATSE members ratified their new television and film contracts under its electoral college system—although Los Angeles locals rejected the deal in the popular vote. Among LA locals, the Basic Agreement was rejected in the popular vote with 49.6 percent voting yes to 50.4 percent voting no.

NBC’s “AGT: Extreme,” the spinoff of the longtime NBC hit, is headed back to the air in midseason. Production was halted after an on-set accident injured stuntman Jonathan Goodwin. (Correction from yesterday’s report: While Goodwin suffered serious injury, saying he had been “to the very brink,” he survived the 40 foot fall.)

Prolific TV producer and multi-hyphenate Chuck Lorre’s Chuck Lorre Family Foundation committed to donating $1.5 million to fund STEM education in public schools. The donation is earmarked for low-income communities and focused on middle school applied science classroom projects in celebration of the fifth season of “Young Sheldon,” currently airing on CBS.

Dish Network and Sinclair Broadcast Group, the second-largest TV owner in the US, finally reached a carriage agreement that keeps 144 stations on the air in 86 markets. The deal also includes the Tennis Channel, but as of yet does not include the 19 Bally regional sports networks operated by a group of investors led by Sinclair. Dish dropped those RSNs in summer 2019.

The ATX Television Festival will return to in-person programming after being virtual the last two years. Dubbed “TV Camp for Grown Ups,” the event will run June 2-5, 2022 in downtown Austin.
