IN THE NEWS
Fox News and NBC News are among the thirteen media organizations that issued a joint statement supporting CNN’s lawsuit against the Trump administration for revoking the White House press credentials of correspondent Jim Acosta. Said Jay Wallace, president of the Fox News, a frequent supporter of Trump, “Secret Service passes for working White House journalists should never be weaponized.” CNN requested a restraining order to have Acosta’s credentials restored; the government contends it “was lawful” to bar Acosta.
In an initial hearing yesterday, during which CNN and Acosta alleged the suspension violates the First and Fifth Amendments, CNN attorney Theodore Boutros called the suspension “the definition of arbitrariness and capriciousness,” and asked, “Where are the standards? Rudeness is not a standard. If it were, no one could have gone to the press conference.”
In another lawsuit filed in February, over President Trump’s move to terminate special protections shielding certain immigrants from deportation, lawyers are seeking unaired footage from The Apprentice during which the then-TV host “uses racial and/or ethnic slurs.” Subpoenas have been issued to MGM Holdings and Trump Productions; Trump has maintained no such tapes exist.
PBS announced its Winter/Spring 2019 schedule. Among the highlights: the season three premiere of Masterpiece’s Victoria on Sunday, January 13, at 9p, followed by two-part special, Victoria and Albert: The Wedding at 10p. Another royal two-parter, Margaret: The Rebel Princess, premieres Sunday, February 10, at 10p. Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. does double duty, as host of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., launching season five on Tuesday, January 8, at 8p, and limited series Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, arriving Tuesday, April 9, at 9p.
Irin Carmon, co-author of “Notorious RBG” and a writer on legal and gender issues, is now a contributor to CNN. The net’s Brian Stelter announced the news in his newsletter.
MTV is going wild again, bringing “MTV Spring Break” back to Cancun in 2019 with performers, surprise celebrity guests, and thousands of (maybe-not-on-their-best-behavior) young people. In a nod to the current cultural climate, the net will also concurrently host alternative Spring Break events for young activists who use their free time to give back. The news comes on the heels of MTV’s acquisition of SnowGlobe Music Festival, an expansion of its live events business.
Univision announced 3Q18 financial results that included a decrease in total revenue of 17%, to $628 million, and operating income down 34%, to $231 million, but a double digit gain in subscriber revenue. The numbers were impacted by headwinds including Univision’s carriage dispute with Dish, the World Cup’s impact on advertising, lower ratings and the 2018 Televisa PLA rate increase, said CEO Vince Sadusky, who sounded rosier about the future. “Our teams are rededicated to the Company’s core mission of serving Hispanic America and with many structural and organizational changes now in place, I am optimistic about our strategy going forward,” he said. “We have a great base to build from.”
Breakthrough With Dr. Steve Perry landed a limited run on Fox Television Stations. The syndicated talker from CBS Television Distribution, starring educator and advocate Perry, will get a two-week try-out beginning January 7 in eight markets. “We think Breakthrough has potential,” said Frank Cicha, SVP of Programming for Fox TV Stations. “And being able to present it in January, when there isn’t much going on in syndication, makes it that much more compelling. Our goal is to deliver fresh programming year-round.”
