The 2019 midseason schedule for CW is starting to gel, with new series Roswell, New Mexico arriving Tuesday, January 15, at 9p, and Black Lightning shifting to Mondays after Arrow starting Monday, January 21, at 9p. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns to Mondays in April after the season two finale of Lightning. MTV is expanding its global live events business into the U.S. with the acquisition of SnowGlobe Music Festival, the annual three-day outdoor New Year’s Eve event in South Lake Tahoe, California. “With SnowGlobe, MTV is taking the natural next step in its resurgence by expanding deeper into live events, as we continue to reach our fans and capitalize on our strong brand in new ways,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo. “In a festival space where many events have become indistinguishable, SnowGlobe stands out with a unique mix of music, sports, and art.”
After Fox Business Network senior correspondent Charlie Gasparino reported that “pressure is mounting on the Department of Justice to investigate alleged antitrust violations committed by Comcast,” President Trump weighed in. Gasparino said that the American Cable Association sent a letter demanding an investigation, citing “substantial competitive harm” Comcast provided to consumers, prompting Trump to tweet that the ACA “has big problems with Comcast” and that the 2011 Comcast-NBCU merger has “much more potential for damage to consumers” than the AT&T/Time Warner deal. Comcast responded to the ACA’s letter, saying it is without merit “and constitutes an inappropriate attempt to gain leverage in the commercial marketplace.”
Cinedigm Media struck a content partnership with Bridgestone Media Group for family-friendly programming for its faith-based Dove Channel. The deal includes 60 titles.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Digital studio Portal A has greenlit two pilots, part of a program aimed at bringing show formats directly to fans. “Some of the most groundbreaking series in recent memory – from Insecure to Broad City – have come as a result of creative talent bypassing the traditional gatekeepers and taking an idea directly to the audience,” said Nate Houghteling, EP at Portal A. Pilots include horror/comedy Hey Guys, told in Instagram format, and Alt Web, a docu-series dedicated to stranger-than-fiction stories born on the Internet.
Marti Noxon (UnReal, Sharp Objects) struck an overall deal with Netflix to produce new series programming through her Tiny Pyro. All of the first nine episodes will be available to watch in any order. “Interrogation pushes the boundaries of what a television series can be with its truly unique format,” said Julie McNamara, EVP, Original Content [Lynn: note” Uc here], CBS All Access. “It’s also a series that could only be executed with the technical capabilities of a streaming service.”

DIGITAL
YouTube’s creator economy is endangered by the EU’s efforts to revise its copyright directive, which holds internet companies directly responsible for any copyright infringement in the content shared on the platform, said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki in a blog post Monday. “While we support the goals of article 13, the European Parliament’s current proposal will create unintended consequences that will have a profound impact on the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people,” writes Wojcicki. “The parliament’s approach is unrealistic in many cases because copyright owners often disagree over who owns what rights. If the owners cannot agree, it is impossible to expect the open platforms that host this content to make the correct rights decisions.”
Barbra Streisand and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro are onboard the movement to #SaveFilmStruck, WarnerMedia’s streamer of classic, independent, cult and art house films that’s set to fold on November 29. Turner and WB Digital Networks said, in explaining the shuttering, that while FilmStruck has a very loyal fan base, “it remains a niche service.” Argues Kevin Bahr, creator of the petition, on Change.org, “This was not about creating the next Netflix of Hulu, this was about preserving the art of film from all walks of life through the years.” At press time, the petition was about to hit 50,000 signatures.
Students who cut their daily use of Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram to ten minutes per day in a recent study from the University of Pennsylvania experienced significant declines in loneliness and depression. “It is ironic, but perhaps not surprising, that reducing social media, which promised to help us connect with others, actually helps people feel less lonely and depressed,” said the study.
Many users found themselves unable to access or post to Facebook services including WhatsApp and Instagram at one point on Monday. The cause was a routine test, explained Facebook. “We quickly investigated and restored access for everyone,” said Facebook.

Football stars past and present Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Harris Burton, Ronnie Lott and Marshawn Lynch are appearing in PSAs supporting Common Sense’s #DeviceFreeDinner campaign. “Research shows that kids and adults alike feel addicted to their devices, and our need to constantly check them undermines family connections,” said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense, a nonprofit dedicated to helping kids thrive amid media and technology. “Family interaction, including eating meals together, is critical for children’s social and intellectual development.”
