IN THE NEWS

The media needs to show more complex portrayals of Black people onscreen, according to 93% of respondents in a survey from OWN and National Research Group. Ninety-five percent of those surveyed said they want to see more stories about Black joy, versus pain and struggle, and 71% said diversity in media “has the biggest influence” on making them feel more confident and proud.

Get smart: “Jeopardy!” will hold its first-ever Professors Tournament, beginning Monday, December 6 and running weeknights through Friday, December 17. Instructors from 15 colleges and universities compete for a $100,000 grand prize and a spot on the upcoming Tournament of Champions. “There was a sense of kinship and academic camaraderie among the group, along with a healthy dose of competitiveness,” said host Mayim Bialik. “That energy made this inaugural Professors Tournament incredibly special.”

While Republicans are objecting to President Joe Biden’s FCC nominee, consumer advocate Gigi Sohn (“I will do everything in my power to convince colleagues on both sides of the aisle to reject this extreme nominee,” posted Sen. Lindsay Graham), Sohn has a friend in the president of conservative news network One News America. Wrote OAN’s Charles Herring, “I’ve found myself advocating for more open markets in an environment that is arguably a quasi monopoly. I’ve fought in the trenches side-by-side with Gigi Sohn for a number of years on multiple issues. I’m fully aware of Gigi’s personal views, yet I’m even more knowledgeable on her strong belief and advocacy for diversity in the programming lineup, especially in news, regardless of conflicts with her personal views.” The Senate Commerce Committee is holding a hearing on Biden appointee Jessica Rosenworcel next week, but is holding off on Sohn’s hearing.

Dominion Voting Systems filed a new lawsuit against Fox Corp., looking for access to documents that would indicate how much awareness Rupert Murdoch and CEO Lachlan Murdoch had when it came to coverage of the 2020 election. “This lawsuit is a continuation of Dominion’s efforts to hold accountable all Fox entities that participated in the harmful defamation campaign against Dominion,” said the company. Fox News has filed a motion to dismiss an earlier suit filed by Dominion.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Paramount+ gave a series order to “Fatal Attraction,” a reimagining of the 1980 film. Lizzy Caplan (“Masters of Sex”) will play Alex, the obsessed lover (“I’m not going to be ignored”) played by Glenn Close in the movie. The Paramount Television Studios series is written by Alexandra Cunningham (“Dirty John”), who will serve as showrunner and EP.

TLC renewed three reality shows. “Extreme Sisters” will be back for season two, “I Love a Mama’s Boy” landed a season three order, and “sMothered” will return for season four. “Each of these returning series deliver fresh twists on family and relationship programming,” said Howard Lee, President of TLC Streaming and Network Originals. “Sometimes, loving someone can go a little too far and these docuseries offer a front row seat.”

Cyber Group Studios (“Gigantosaurus”) and Grilled Cheese Media (“Uncle Dave’s Laugh Emporium”) are developing “Yum-Yum,” an animated comedy-adventure series for preschoolers. Grilled Cheese Media is led by Dave Coulier (“Full House”) and animator/executive producer Bob Harper (“The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!”), who are co-creators and executive producers of the new series.

HGTV is expanding its “Home Town” franchise with “Home Town Kickstart,” presented in partnership with People. Slated to premiere in 2022, the series will give six small towns a boost to their revitalization efforts. “The staggering success and positive impact of ‘Home Town Takeover’ showed us that the idea of small town revitalization resonates with America,” said Jane Latman, President, HGTV & Streaming Home Content, Discovery, Inc. “To keep this incredible momentum going with ‘Home Town Kickstart,’ we went back to the thousands of submissions we received for ‘Home Town Takeover’ and identified six more towns to support with HGTV’s star power and expertise.”

Harrison Land has launched a new production company, OverUnder. Land, Jupiter’s former SVP and executive producer, will develop and produce nonfiction programming with a focus on feature-length documentaries, true crime and talent-driven titles across all platforms. Joining Land in the new venture is Katherine Grandy, who worked alongside him at Jupiter and has been appointed as VP of Production and Development.

Scott Sternberg (“On the Case With Paula Zahn”) has announced his expansion into the digital realm with three new companies: Resort Livestream, Crimestream, and TodayLive. Sternberg plans to continue producing for television, but will also generate new shows for digital streams and platforms, as well as creating exclusive content to support the existing TV franchises he produces.

Ruth Wilson (“The Affair”) will play mob wife Anna Genovese in HBO limited series “Mob Queens,” based on the Stitcher podcast. Lena Dunham (“Girls”) will co-write, direct, and executive produce under her Good Thing Going banner, while Wilson will exec produce via Lady Lazarus. Author Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island) will co-write and executive produce. Michael Seligman and Jessica Bendinger, creator and hosts of the pod cast, will also executive produce.

Netflix dropped a Latina housekeeper character from upcoming comedy “Uncoupled” after an actress who was up for the part said the description of the character was “hurtful and derogatory.” Actress Ada Maris (“Nurses”) told Variety she was offended by the stereotypical depiction, including broken English. In response, Netflix told Variety, “We’re sorry that Ms. Maris had a negative experience, and this character will not appear in the series.”

STREAMING

Disney+’s addition of just 2.1 million subscribers during Disney’s fiscal fourth quarter may not have impressed Wall Street, but Disney CEO Bob Chapek said it’s not cause for concern. “We’re real pleased with where we’re sitting, but …it’s not going to be a linear rate quarter to quarter,” said Chapek during an earnings call. Between jumping from about 60 countries now to 160 and an influx of fresh programming, next year’s third quarter “will be more like what we expect to see from an ongoing standpoint,” said Chapek.

Streaming growth has stalled and the fight for streamers is now to retain subscribers, according to Kantar’s Q3 Entertainment on Demand Barometer. The proportion of US households who have a video subscription has dropped to 85% (down 1% points QoQ, and up 2% points YoY), noted the report. Other findings include:
. Video streaming QoQ penetration decline is driven by paid SVOD , which declined 1.5% points.
. 85% of penetration losses in Q3 2021 are those who accessed just 1 video streaming service in the previous quarter.
. Amazon Prime Video is the #1 destination for new subscribers for the second consecutive quarter, but subscriber churn is higher than acquisition, resulting in overall loss of penetration of 2.4% points QoQ.
. Netflix subscriber base continues to sit at 2/3 of US subscribers, but penetration continues to decline QoQ by 1.8% pts.
. Despite QoQ penetration decline, the number of households taking out/accessing new services is up as stacking continues to grow among current streamers.
. With the success of “Ted Lasso,” the top most enjoyed and recommended content in Q3 2021, Apple TV+ gained share of new SVOD subscribers (now at 7% of new subscriptions).

Lou Dobbs, whose Fox Business Network show was canceled last February, is back, with podcast “The Great America Show.” “I hope you will join me on this new journey, it’ll be a hoot!” Dobbs tweeted. In a clip, Dobbs says, “This podcast will take account of both political parties and do its best to keep America great.”

TECH TALK

Gamut is expanding its measurement capabilities via a partnership with iSpot. Gamut, which recently integrated iSpot’s unified, cross-platform measurement featuring location data from PlaceIQ, can now measure the ability of local OTT and linear TV campaigns to drive visits to retail locations. “Showing advertisers the unique reach and additional exposures we provide, coupled with actual data showing how often these ad exposures resulted in foot traffic, enables our clients to invest confidently in locally targeted OTT,” said Soo Jin Oh, President at Gamut. “We now have the technology to run hyper-local targeting and personalized messaging at massive scale.”

NBCUniversal has struck a new partnership with conversational media company, Holler, to drive new marketing and advertising experiences for brands within messaging. “At NBCUniversal, we have a longstanding commitment to investing in partnerships that connect our clients and audiences in meaningful ways,” said Krishan Bhatia, President & Chief Business Officer, NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships. “Holler is a unique partner, dedicated to content innovation in the rapidly growing digital messaging space.” For starters, NBCUniversal and Holler will partner to create shareable stickers within Venmo’s P2P payment platform that link brands to tentpole moments from the red carpet to the sports arena and more.
