This week Showtime Sports, and Showtime Basketball, take another bold step forward with Friday’s premiere of “Kevin Garnett: Anything Is Possible.” The film, which explores the journey of Basketball Hall of Famer Garnett, is executive produced by independent filmmaker Marc Levin, Brian Bennett and Kevin Garnett and produced and directed by Daniel B. Levin and Eric W. Newman and produced by Mike Marangu. We caught up with Eric Newman, who in also Executive Producer of the Showtime Basketball platform, to look at the success both of the entire platform and why KG’s amazing story is ripe for where we are today.
Newman on how and why has the Showtime Basketball platform is a winner…Led by the vision of Brian Daily (SVP, Showtime Sports) and Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza, the platform is the perfect convergence between a network with a vision and an impressive catalog of basketball documentaries, a committed production partner in Malka Media, and incredible talent starting with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson and “All the Smoke.” Their realness, authenticity and relatability along with the trust they put in us and in turn the trust our guests already had in them, has been key to creating a content ecosystem that spans from social media, digital content and a presence on the network.
On what fans should expect from “Kevin Garnett: Anything is Possible”…The impact KG made and continues to make on the game, basketball culture and the business of basketball is quite remarkable. He is also an elite storyteller as you feel his passion and emotion with every story, as at times he was clearly reliving moments right in front of our eyes. One other thing that really stands out are these life-long bonds that are formed through the game as so many of our “complementary voices” gave us so much insightful and meaningful material, which showed how much they care about KG and the impact KG made on them.
On KG The Brand…He is passionate, authentic, extremely thoughtful and incredibly entertaining. He has a unique and dynamic presence that takes over a room, captivating people who have never been around him before or seen him off of the basketball court. He channels that energy and passion into creative conversations, and wanting to both share and soak up as much knowledge as possible, is very special to witness.
On the evolution of athlete storytelling…It is easier because of both the demand and more emerging platforms than ever but the challenge of telling a dynamic story that can differentiate itself both in and out of sports is only increasing as the volume of the content released continues to skyrocket. But for KG specifically it was about finding the right partner both on the network side and production company side, and thankfully it happened the way it did with Showtime, Blowback Productions and Content Cartel. We wanted to create something both impactful and cinematic around an incredible subject. I think we achieved that.
On what’s next for the platform…We are continuing to build one step at a time as we are now in season 3 of “All the Smoke,” with the return of the NBA What’s Burnin is back for its second season, along with the second season of Best Of All The Smoke now airing weekly on Showtime. We are developing KG’s upcoming show “KG Certified,” along with growing partnerships with the Iverson Classic and adding more talent to the team with Paul Pierce joining us in front of the camera and Jelani McCoy joining us as a senior producer. The most important thing is to keep telling great stories and making sure the talent we work with, hosts and guests, all continue to feel comfortable knowing their stories will be produced and presented properly and truthfully.
