IN THE NEWS
Fox News set a record for the most-watched election night coverage ever on a cable news network, according to early Nielsen data. Primetime coverage averaged 13.6 million total viewers and 4.9 million among A25-54, topping ABC, CBS and NBC as well as cable networks.
Twitter put a warning label on tweets from President Trump the morning after Election Day that attacked vote counting process. The content could be “misleading,” warned Twitter. Among others slapped with a warning label was Wisconsin Democratic party chair Ben Wikler, who claimed Joe Biden won his state before all ballots were counted. “Our teams remain vigilant and will continue working to protect the integrity of the election conversation,” said Twitter.
Amid all-day post- election coverage – and after the Trump campaign said it would request a recount in Wisconsin – Al Gore, who lost his recount battle in the 2000 election, tweeted, “In America, no one person or political party can alter the unassailable principle that the rule of law prevails. Every vote must be counted in this election, and the will of the American people will determine the outcome. We must remain calm. Democracy will win the day.”
Eight videos out of the top 20 in the YouTube search results for “LIVE 2020 Presidential Election Results” showed the same fake results graphics, apparently an attempt to get views, reported Insider. None were affiliated with political organizations, but were “hip-hop and music-related channels … usurping outlets like CBS News and NowThis News in YouTube search results.” The top four search results for “Presidential Election Results” also featured fake election results, found Insider.
Third quarter revenue for Sinclair Broadcast Group was $1.5 billion, up 37% from the same quarter in 2019, but the company took a $4.2 billion write-down on the RSNs it acquired last year. Political revenues during this election year were a strong $109 million in the third quarter, while distribution revenues were $1 billion versus $679 million in 3Q19. “There has been a dislocation in the market because of COVID. There’s no doubt about that. But our inventory still is highly valuable,” said President/CEO Chris Ripley during an earnings call. “In fact, it’s only getting more valuable as advertising-based content shrinks and the amount of avails that you can get in front of people – as people migrate to more ad-free platforms – continues to get more scarce.
Canada is considering an amendment to its Broadcasting Act that would require streaming services to invest a portion of their revenue in local production. According to the CBC, if the same law for broadcasters applied to streaming services, online platforms could contribute upwards of $830 million of Canadian content by 2023.
Ruth Wilson left her role in Showtime’s “The Affair” ahead of the fifth and final season because there were things “she didn’t feel safe about,” the actress told Stylist. While she didn’t specifically reference problematic sex scenes she told The Hollywood Reporter about last year, Wilson said in her Stylist interview, “What’s important to say is that I did speak up. I did have a voice. I did stand up for myself. There was a situation on ‘The Affair’ where things didn’t feel right, and I dealt with them, and I managed to protect myself.”
Univision New York has launched “Comienza en Casa” (It Starts at Home), a digital campaign created to start conversations about discrimination and stereotypes in the Latino community. “‘Comienza en Casa’ is an employee driven initiative created to help better understand the racial inequalities and biases within our own communities,” said Roberto Yañez, President and General Manager, Univision New York. “I applaud our employees’ courage and willingness to share their stories of discrimination in order to unlearn, learn and educate our colleagues and community.”
Horizon Media inked a deal with iHeartRadio to integrate iHeartRadio’s SmartAudio platform with Horizon’s connected marketing platform, blu. The combined asset is intended to build more specific audience demographics and find individuals that present the highest potential value for clients.
Global video gaming revenue is projected to rise 20% in 2020 to $174.9 billion, according to Newzoo. That’s $15.6 billion higher than Newzoo’s previous forecast, early in the pandemic. The estimate reflects increased sales for physical and digital games, as people shelter at home.
Kanye West, who had been set to appear on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, canceled. “Well, we’ll try to get one of the other presidents to come,” said Kimmel. West collected only about 60,000 votes in his presidential bid, but hope springs eternal – he conceded defeat with the tweet, “KANYE 2024.”
Foo Fighters will serve as musical guests for SNL’s post-election episode, their ninth appearance on the NBC sketch comedy show. Dave Chappelle will host. |

The BBC said it will look into fresh evidence relating to the methods Martin Bashir landed an exclusive interview with Princess Diana in 1995. While Bashir was cleared in a 1996 internal investigation, Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, said he has uncovered new evidence of journalistic malpractice, including forged bank statements. The BBC said it is “hampered” by the fact that Bashir, now BBC News’ religion editor, is “seriously unwell” with COVID-19.
