IN THE NEWS

The National Labor Relations Board has received accusations of “unfair labor practices” against Netflix. In the wake of the controversy over comments in Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special, “The Closer,” about the trans and LGBTQ+ communities, two employees have files complaints alleging they were fired over “false and pretextual reasons” and “retaliation.” “Netflix engaged in the above activity to quell employees from speaking up about working conditions including, but not limited to, seeking to create a safe and affirming work environment for Netflix employees, speaking up about Netflix’s products and the impact of its product choices on the LGBTQ+ community, and providing support for employees whom Netflix has treated in an unlawful and disparate manner,” reads the charge. Responded the streamer, “We recognize the hurt and pain caused to our trans colleagues over the last few weeks. But we want to make clear that Netflix has not taken any action against employees for either speaking up or walking out.”

Kelly O’Donnell has been named senior White House correspondent at NBC News. White House correspondent Geoff Bennett is leaving his position, but will remain a contributor.

Carley Shimkus starts as co-host of “Fox & Friends First” this morning at 4a. Shimkus replaces Jillian Mele, who is returning to Philadelphia to focus on her MBA program. Shimkus is no stranger to FNC viewers – she’s served as a reporter for Fox News Headlines 24/7, a substitute anchor on FNC and a co-host for Fox Nation.

Even if he wins one of the two awards for which he’s nominated, Morgan Wallen won’t be giving any speeches at the 2021 American Music Awards. After a video surfaced of Wallen using a racial slur surfaced in February, he was not invited to the Billboard Music Awards in April, and won’t have a ticket to the Country Music Awards on November 10. Now he’ll have to cross the AMAs, airing November 21 on ABC, off the list, too. Wallen has apologized and promised “to do better.”

Charter Communications reported 3Q21 results of $6.50 a share, handily beating analysts’ estimates, and up from $3.90 in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 9% to $13.15 billion. The company lost 133,000 residential video customers in the quarter, versus an increase of 53,000 in 3Q20, but gained 243,000 residential internet customers. As of September 30, Charter had 15.3 million residential video customers.

Jim Bob Duggar, father of 20 and star of TLC’s “19 and Counting” (2008-2015), announced he is running for the Arkansas State Senate. Before he rose to reality TV fame, Duggar served in the Arkansas House of Representatives.

Nielsen reported 3Q21 revenue of $882 million, up 5.5 %. Net income was $103 million, a jump from $10 million in 3Q20. “Growth in the U.S. was led by national media clients and digital-first clients, and we saw particular strength in digital products from our national media client base,” said DEO David Kenny. Talking about the MRC’s suspension of its accreditation for Nielsen’s national and local TV services due to undercounting issues, Kenny said, “We believe in accreditation and fully support the audit process. In fact, we continue to be the only service audited across our products. We are in continuous dialogue with the MRC, and we’ve also engaged an external firm to support our efforts toward remediating outstanding issues.”

STREAMING

Locast has been ordered to pay $32 million in fines and shut down operations to settle a copyright lawsuit by ABC, CBS, Fox and NBCU. Locast, which provided free streams of local broadcast feeds, suspended operations in September. While Locast positioned itself as a non-profit, which would qualify it as exempt from copyright rules, the court saw things differently.

TECH TALK

The Senate unanimously passed the Secure Equipment Act, which requires the FCC to ban new equipment licenses for any technology company the government concludes poses a national security threat, including China’s ZTE and Huawei. “In today’s increasingly connected world, we must animate our technology with our values,” said Senator Ed Markey, a co-sponsor of the bill. “Our bipartisan legislation will keep compromised equipment out of U.S. telecommunications networks and ensure our technology is safe for consumers and secure for the United States.”
