Lookalike Audiences: In social media advertising, the phrase Lookalike Audiences refers to consumers who are likely to be interested in a brand or business because data indicates that they’re similar to the business’s existing customers. The phrase is most prominently used in reference to Facebook advertising, but some people have also begun to use it in reference to other social platforms, including Snapchat
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

On Thursday, Twitter announced that it would soon be shuttering Vine, its six-second video app’s. Shortly afterward, Vine co-founder Rus Yusupov issued a cautionary tweet to his followers: “Don’t sell your company!” No matter – now he’s co-founded a new company. Yusupov’s new project, also announced Thursday, is Hype, a new mobile live-streaming app. Hype will have plenty of competition in the mobile live-streaming space (particularly Twitter’s Periscope and Facebook Live), but it’s got some unique features. Most notably, Hype allows users to add pre-recorded videos and photos to its live-streams. Hype has been available as a private beta-test since this past March. On Thursday, the company stripped the app of its required registration code, opening the app up to anyone who wants to try it.
 
Amazon Prime is coming to China – but not its video and music content. Instead, Chinese customers will only have access to the service’s unlimited free shipping. It’s not surprising: Western streaming services have found it nearly impossible to break into the Chinese market, largely because of China’s strict regulatory practices. The country favors domestic media, largely to the exclusion of foreign content. Even Netflix recently acknowledged that it has little hope of breaking into China anytime soon.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

 
FOTV Media Networks Inc., an interrelated group of digital media companies that produces and distributes video, hologram, VR and 360-degree content, now has a Roku app. In addition to Roku devices, the FOTV app is also available for iOS and Android, and comes pre-loaded on Lenovo PCs.
 

CYNOPSIS SNAPCHAT BOOT CAMP

 
“Snapchat gives people the opportunity to see and experience what other people are doing…in real-time, day to day…It represents a massive opportunity [for advertisers] to reach people who are actively looking for and consuming the things that are happening that day.” That was Alec McNayr, Co-Founder and CCO of McBeard, at Cynopsis’s Snapchat Boot Camp last week. DIGITAL INFLUENCERS
 

Over the past year or so, we’ve seen a number of digital stars ink deals with traditional media companies and agencies. The latest on that list is YouTube comedian Grace Helbig, who just signed onto an overall deal with Lionsgate. (The news was first reported by Variety.) Under the pact, Helbig will develop movies and TV series for the studio. That includes an upcoming romantic comedy feature, which Helbig will star in alongside fellow YouTuber Mamrie Hart. Lionsgate is also looking into creating two other films with Helbig, and exploring other TV opportunities.
 
 

POLICY
 

The FCC just made life harder for the likes of Comcast and Verizon. The regulator voted to prohibit broadband providers from using subscribers’ behavioral data in ad targeting. (Behavioral data includes info gleaned from web activity and app use.) “It is the consumer’s information,” said FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. “It is not the information of the network the consumer hires to deliver that information.” The rules don’t apply to web publishers, search engines or social networks. Not surprisingly, privacy advocates supported the decision, while ad industry groups and broadband providers fiercely opposed them. Like many of its more controversial recent decisions, the FCC’s vote was 3-2.
 
 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) has made a new hire. Dennis Buchheim, most recently Yahoo’s VP of Product Management for advertising platforms, will hold two titles at the trade org: SVP of Data and Ad Effectiveness and GM of IAB Data Center of Excellence. Buchheim will develop business cases and executive programs promoting effective advertising. He’ll also oversee the education of 3MS (“Making Measurment Make Sense”), a cross-industry initiative focused on improving the way digital media is measured, planned, and transacted.
 
Adbrain, a cross-device technology provider that maps consumer behavior for advertisers and agencies, has opened up a new office in Fremont, Seattle. (The company already has offices in San Francisco and New York.) Adbrain CTO Jason Atlas will head up the Seattle office, which will serve as Adbrain’s engineering hub. The company has also made some new hires to fill out the Seattle team. Those include Chief Architect Poul Costinksy and VP of Global Engineering Manu Manianchira (both formerly of Microsoft), as well as cybersecurity expert Chris Curwood

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT
 

Remember Instagram Husband? The digital spot, about aggrieved husbands who are forced to act as their wives’ Instagram photographers, went viral last December. (5.7 million views and counting.) Now those same husbands are back, and just a little less put-upon, in a new spot for Fossil. The big change? The husbands can now use the selfie button on their smart watches to make their picture-taking a little easier. Called Just Husbands, the ad was created by digital marketing agency 360i. It’s pretty darn funny, and you can check it out here.
