IN THE NEWS

Yesterday was a big day for Raven-Symone: She started her morning announcing on The View that she’ll be exiting the talk show by the end of the year. “I have an announcement to make. No, I’m not pregnant… We’re doing a That’s So Raven II,” she said on air. She’ll be heading back to LA, where she’ll develop the as-yet-untitled  spinoff for Disney Channel and reprise her That’s So Raven character. The actress also will serve as an exec producer on the series. She and Disney Channel are beginning preliminary casting for the new family sitcom, which will continue the story of her character from the network’s first original multi-camera production, which told the story of Raven Baxter, a teen whose ability to glimpse flashes of the future often got her in hot water. Longtime writer/producer partners Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff (Best Friends Whenever) are also working on the development of the spinoff. As the pilot story goes, Raven is now a divorced mother to two preteen kids, a son and daughter, one of whom has inherited her ability to catch glimpses of the future.

As conversation swirls around her upcoming contract negotiations and her most recent on-air anti-Trump clash, this time with Newt Gingrich, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly will co-host Live with Kelly alongside Kelly Ripa on November 9, the morning after the Presidential election. Kelly is the latest guest host for Live since Michael Strahan left the program earlier this year to join Good Morning America.

The Peabody Awards is growing its advisory board. Joining the nearly two dozen existing board members are: Kevin Reilly, president of TBS and TNT and chief creative officer at Turner Entertainment; Zack Van Amburg, president of Sony Pictures Television; Craig Erwich, SVP and head of content at Hulu; and Wendy Clark, CEO of ad agency DDB North America.

In the “you can’t make this stuff up” department, Donald Trump is blaming the Access Hollywood hot mic for catching him boasting about his ability to forcibly kiss and grope women because he’s famous. In an interview scheduled to air last night on Catholic net EWTN, Trump is reported to say, “The microphones, I mean to be honest should, you know, should never have been on.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ABC is developing The Zipcovers, a ‘60s-era family comedy that hails from Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions. Written by Marshall Todd (Barbershop), series is about a divorced mother of three who moves her family to Austin, Texas, soon after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in an effort to be closer to her estranged sister. In Austin, her teenage son forms a Beatles-esque rock band, to the bewilderment of friends and family. Davis and Tennon executive-produce through JuVee, and Todd co-executive produces. ABC Studios, where JuVee has an overall deal in April, is the studio.

Fox has given a put pilot commitment to an untitled project from Ian Brennan, Glee and Scream Queens co-creator, and Juno scribe Diablo Cody that’s produced by Simon Cowell. The comedy centers on Marion Lolo, who has 26 synchronized swimming medals, one restraining order against her and a sum total of zero friends. 20th Century Fox TV is producing with Cowell’s Syco Entertainment.

Bravo gave the greenlight to three new and three returning series. New additions include First Family of Hip Hop and Relative Success with Tabatha, as well as a franchise expansion with Southern Charm Savannah. Additionally, the network confirmed new season orders for Real Housewives of Dallas season 2, Southern Charm season 4, as well as Shahs of Sunset season 6 and Million Dollar Listing New York season 6. Season 3 of Southern Charm averaged 1.7 million total viewers, up 18 percent year-over-year.

Freeform picked up a fifth season of its original comedy series Young & Hungry. The new season will kick off production next week and will premiere in 2017. Young & Hungry wrapped its fourth season August 3 with strong season-to-season gains in Total Viewers and A18-49.

Pop ordered a 10-episode second season of its original scripted comedy Nightcap ahead of the series premiere next month. Ali Wentworth stars as an overworked talent booker on a fictitious late-night talk show; each ep features celebrity guests and the antics that go on behind the scenes. The series will premiere November 16 with back-to-back episodes on Pop.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

CMT will bring back Director’s Guild of America Award-winning competition show Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge on Sunday, November 13 at 10p. The series stars sports and entertainment icon “Stone-Cold” Steve Austin, and attracted nearly 4 million weekly viewers last season.

AT&T’s Audience Network will debut the series Religion of Sports on Tuesday, November 15. Executive producers for the show are Michael Strahan, Gotham Chopra and Tom Brady.

Season 3 of Rickey Smiley For Real returns to TV One on Tuesday, November 15 at 8p. This season Smiley will continue to struggle to maintain his sanity by juggling his hectic business, family and personal schedules, while the camera also will follow the hijinx of his family and co-workers.

Food blogger Ali Khan will continue his search for the best Cheap Eats for breakfast, lunch, a snack and dinner with the season premiere of his series on Cooking Channel on Thursday, December 1 at 10p. With only 12 hours and $35 in his pocket, Khan is on a different quest each episode.

WE tv will launch paranormal docu-series Ghosts In the Hood on Thursday, January 5. Series blends humor with the supernatural and follows a group of diverse ghost hunters as they investigate unexplained phenomena across LA with their team O.P.O. (Official Paranormal Operations).

Fox is shaking its Bones for a final time. The longtime series, which has seen several schedule jumps in recent years, will premiere its final season on Tuesday, January 3, following the time slot debut of New Girl and premiere of new comedy The Mick.

“Destination Fridays,” a reality-based programming block, launched last week on INSP, includes Cash Cowboys, at 8p, State Plate at 9p, and season 2 of Handcrafted America at 9:30p.

COMING UP

CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will broadcast two live shows during the week of the Presidential election – Monday, November 7 and Wednesday, November 9 at 11:35p. Colbert will host both shows from the Ed Sullivan Theater in NY, and they will air in addition to the previously announced live election night special on Showtime on Tuesday, November 8 at 11p. For the Monday show Colbert will be joined by Don Cheadle, Katherine Waterston and Drive-By Truckers. On Wednesday, he welcomes Miles Teller, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog.

In other election week live programming news, Lifetime and ABC’s The View are teaming for a live 2½-hour primetime edition of the talker to air November 8 at 9p. The View Live Election Special will feature the show’s co-hosts from their set with a live studio audience, election-themed topics and activities and live reports from Times Square. Lifetime is encouraging voters to be heard through election-themed on-air interstitials made in partnership with theSkimm, the media company behind the popular email newsletter. UnReal star Shiri Appleby conceived, directed and exec-produced the interstitials.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. For the 20th year, Freeform returns with its 25 Days of Christmas programming event, December 1-25. This year’s holiday cheer will include the network television premiere of Holiday Joy and the Freeform premieres of Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups, Snow Buddies and Just Friends.

More additions to the 2016 American Music Awards lineup. James Bay and Fifth Harmony, as well as special duets from The Chainsmokers and Halsey, and Carlos Vives with Shakira, have been added to the show, which will broadcast live on Sunday, November 20, at 8p on ABC.

Halloween-themed episodes of Rosanne air Monday October 31 starting at 8p on Laff, with the show taking its regular Monday-Saturday 9-11p slot starting Tuesday, November 1.

Friday Fun Fact: Election Day wasn’t on a fixed day until the mid-19th century. Congress set a uniform day for Presidential elections in 1845 as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This allowed people to observe the Sabbath, travel to vote, and return home for Wednesday, which was observed as Market Day.

This Day in History: 1636 – Harvard College was founded as the first school of higher education in America. Its original name was Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
