CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.27.14 Good morning. It’s Monday, October 27, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
AOL debuted the first four episodes of the show Zoe Saldana Presents: My Hero. Executive produced by actress Zoe Saldana, Ellen Rakieten Entertainment and Relativity Television, the show follows celebrities as they honor the important people in their lives. Guests include Maria Menounos, Julianne Hough, Nick Cannon, Additionally, Zaldana hosted a Twitter chat on Friday through the @AOLOriginals handle.
Citi Private Pass, Live Nation Entertainment and Yahoo announced a new behind-the-scene web series called Backstage with Citi. In the show, Yahoo News Global Anchor Katie Couric will interview artists, with the band Lady Antebellum kicking things off. The next ep will feature O.A.R, which will premiere in early November. Citi is now the official sponsor of Yahoo Live, aka Yahoo’s music vertical with Live Nation. Segments of the interview will be available exclusively on citiprivatepass.com two days before it’s released on Yahoo.
Producer Mark Ciardi (Million Dollar Arm, Miracle) and former Youtube strategy and corporate executive Tom Duterme formed a multiplatform premium content company called Aspire Entertainment, together with venture capitalists William Chang and Ash Vasudevan. Aspire will create scripted and unscripted programming for multiple platforms, with an emphasis on feature film productions. Ciardi said, “People are still hungry for stories that inspire and move them, no matter if they enjoy them in a movie theater or on their phones. Aspire’s goal is to find and produce those stories for a global audience.” Chang will also join the company as Chairman and co-Founder.
Ora.TV launched Queen Bee, a new reality-competition series with Tonya Lewis Lee (Director Spike Lee’s wife), in which she will help discover the next big female entrepreneur. Contestants are challenged to create a new consumer brand, and incorporate audience feedback by urging viewers to back their favorite ideas through crowdfunding. The show will debut on Oct. 28. Ora.TV is known for digital series like Larry KING Now and Cynopsis Model D-nominated Brown Bag Wine Tasting with William Shatner.

The tenth annual New York Television Festival wrapped up the week of events with the Digital Day, which focused on panels including the ins and outs of getting digital projects greenlighted, the next generation of content development, and more. On the panel Supply and Demand: Why Indie TV will be the New Independent Film, participants discussed distribution versus the huge amount of content available. “It’s a horrifically out-of-date system, and you have an entire generation [millennials and the generation behind them] not engaging with traditional media,” Vimeo Vice President of Content Acquisitions and Business Development Sam Toles said. “It’s about reaching your audience through the Internet. Curating also becomes hugely important – for us, instead of going the traditional route of building out VOD systems, we recommend content to our consumers from the creators, artists and influencers themselves.”
Shakira will star in a new series from Mattel Inc., which focuses on millennial moms. The show will include 12 3-5 minute episodes, and debut on Fisher-Price’s YouTube channel today (Monday). The pop star will also launch a line of baby toys with Fisher-Price.
Speaking of kids, how do programmers partner with brands to deliver messaging that appeals to children, and satisfies both parents and the FTC? Find out during the Oct. 30 webinar “The New Secrets of Kids Branding: Hot Marketing Success Stories.” Speakers include Jennifer Giddens, VP of Marketing for Sprout Cable Entertainment; Kara Rousseau, SVP of Ad Sales Marketing for Disney Media Sales and Marketing and more. CBS is feeling social. Performers from all 21 of the net’s primetime shows are participating in #CBSInstagramTakever, today through Sunday, November 2, by sharing photos and videos from their sets. It’s CBS’s eighth week-long social media event, and the first time a broadcast net has launched a week-long Instagram takeover.

Brand marketers are increasing their use of online video advertising, according to the MediaRadar Online Video Advertising Index. The study found sports and news websites attracted the most online video advertisers: sports sites feature 855 different brand ads, and news sites feature 813 different brands ads. The most dominant were 15 (42 percent) and 30 (37 percent) seconds long, with only ten percent lasting longer than 30 seconds. Consumers opted to skip an ad 85 percent of the time if given the option, with 30-second ads being the most skipped (10.7 percent). “Considering the high click-through rates of online video ads, we expect marketers to continue investing in this highly effective form of advertising,” said MediaRadar CEO Todd Krizelman.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
A new web series parodies the awkwardness that can come along with swiping right for love – also known as the dating app, Tinder. The show, Local Attraction, released one episode a year ago as an experiment; since then, it raised more than $15,000 via a Kickstarter campaign, and is now returning with five new eps. The show portrays just how bumpy an encounter between two strangers can be when they’ve only seen each other’s social media photos. Check out the first episode at www.cynopsis.com/#video.
