10/24/14: Royals’ win lifts Game 2 for FOX; CBS Sports Network slates first bowl game; The NBA proclaims Todos Arriba


Good morning. It’s Friday, October 24, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Game 2 of the World Series showdown between the Giants and Royals picked up the pace for FOX, delivering another primetime win and posting a 7.9/14 household rating/share with 12.9 million viewers on FOX, according to Nielsen fast nationals. That was up 8% in rating and 6% in audience over Game 1 and marks the biggest percentage increase from Game 1 to Game 2 in eight years. Meanwhile, FOX Deportes delivered 279,000 viewers for World Series Game 2, its second most-watched Game 2 ever, surpassed only by Game 2 in 2009 (286,000).

The Orlando Sports Foundation is teaming with CBS Sports Network in a move that will see the channel carry its first-ever college bowl game on Dec. 19, 2015. AutoNation is on-board as the title sponsor of the AutoNation Cure Bowl, a new post-season NCAA football game whose net proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “Bowl Season is one of the most exciting times of the year for college football fans and we are happy to bring the AutoNation Cure Bowl to our viewers,” said Dan Weinberg, Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports. “We are pleased to team with our partners at the American Athletic Conference, as well as the Sun Belt Conference and Orlando Sports Foundation for CBS Sports Network’s inaugural postseason college football game as we showcase the action on the field and help raise funds for breast cancer research.”

The NFL reports that its telecasts took the top two spots among all television programs last week with the FOX national telecast, anchored by Giants/Cowboys, topping the charts with 27.0 million average viewers, followed by the 49ers/Broncos showdown on NBC’s Sunday Night Football with 23.8 million average viewers. This marks the seventh time in seven weeks that two NFL games have topped the weekly viewership charts, according to Nielsen. Overall, 13 NFL games have averaged more than 20 million viewers this season.

HBO Sports announced plans for an all-new special when Under the Lights: Pacquiqo-Algieri hits the spotlight on Nov. 5 at 11:45p. The special is hosted by Max Kellerman and will examine the upcoming HBO PPV on Nov. 22 pitting the two fighters.

FOX Sports will pay tribute to the tenth anniversary of the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash on Sunday at 10:30a on NASCAR Raceday. The episode will feature Jimmie Johnson sharing his memories of the tragic day at Martinsville that saw all ten people traveling on the plane perish, including Rick Hendrick’s son, Ricky Hendrick; brother John Hendrick; Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick, John Hendrick’s twin daughters; head engine builder Randy Dorton; DuPont executive Joe Jackson; Hendrick Motorsports General Manager Jeff Turner; Tony Stewart’s pilot, Scott Lathram; and pilots Liz Morrison and Dick Tracy.

espnW is producing a three-episode documentary series that will run on ESPN2 and spotlight University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma. The series starts Nov. 16 at 10p with espnW Presents: The Geno Auriemma Project and offer “an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at Auriemma via interviews with the coach and the important people around him.”

MSG Network unveiled a new half-hour original series Nothing But Knicks and set to feature Head Coach Derek Fisher, assistant coaches, and players as they take fans on a behind-the-scenes look at the New York Knicks with “special access to practice, film sessions, and exclusive interviews.” The series is hosted by MSG studio analyst Alan Hahn and debuts on Oct. 29 at 8p.

Pac-12 Networks’ original documentary franchise The Drive will go from the field to the court, with the premiere of The Drive: Pac-12 Basketball. The series will debut in January and, like its football counterpart, will go behind-the-scenes to offer fans a special look at their favorite teams and student-athletes with exclusive all-access footage.

After debuting its new Everybody Up campaign featuring Common, the NBA has now unveiled its Spanish-language counterpart Todos Arriba. The 2014-15 marketing campaign will feature Latin artist Henry Santos in a Roll Call spot. Throughout the season, Spanish-language spots will air nationally on ESPN Deportes, Telemundo, Fox Deportes, EstrellaTV, Discovery en Espanol, nuvoTv,  Azteca America, and Mun2.
NASCAR driver Greg Biffle added a new primary sponsor for the 2015 Sprint Cup Series season, with Cheez-It now on board the No. 16 Ford. The deal serves as a piece of the multiyear partnership with Kellogg’s.


Derek Jeter’s new digital venture The Players’ Tribune added another high-profile player to its roster, announcing that NBA All-Star Kevin Love has been named Senior Editor of the site. Love marks the fourth senior editor to be named, following the previous announcements of fellow NBA All-Star Blake Griffin, NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and NFL quarterback Russell Wilson. His inaugural contribution discusses his summer, which left him for a while in “NBA purgatory” as he waited to hear whether or not he’d be traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Cleveland Cavaliers. 
NBCSportsRadio.com will debut its first-ever digital-only show, The 2 Robbies “Football” Show, Saturday at 5p. The Premier League-focused program features NBC Sports Group analysts Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe and will stream live from NBC Sports Group’s state-of-the-art International Broadcast Center in Stamford.

Pac-12 Networks is offering samplers, announcing the on Nov. 14, when 10 of the Conference’s 12 men’s basketball teams open their season live on Pac-12 Networks for Full Court Friday, the platform will offer free online access on Pac-12.com to all games that day, as well as pre, half and postgame coverage, starting at 4:30p.
