Good morning. It’s Monday, October 20, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Cord cutters, be careful what you wish for. With CBS and HBO planning stand-alone streaming services, al a carte viewing is getting more attainable, but  “you are going to have to pay more for less choice,” RBC Capital Markets analyst David Bank told the Wall Street Journal. That’s a sentiment echoed at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit last Thursday. “A la carte is not as cheap as people might think,” said Evan Silverman, SVP, Digital Media at A+E Networks. “The cable bundle might be ripe for price adjustment, but for most people, it’s a pretty good deal.”
 
 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Pop Sugar
announced its first scripted series, called Seriously Distracted. Starring Amy Sedaris, the online comedy will debut on Oct. 21 with eight episodes that follow Sedaris’ character, who runs a New York publicity firm called LeGrand PR. The office is packed with employees distracted by their pop culture obsessions (think Tinder, James Franco and SoulCycle). Seriously Distracted is produced by Above Average (7 Minutes In Heaven), and also stars Greta Lee (Girls) and Kimiko Glenn (Orange is the New Black).
 
Twitter
added a new audio embed feature to its feed last week, thanks to its new partnership with Apple and Soundcloud. The social net’s users can now post photos, videos, gifs and links to audio from Soundcloud and iTunes to tweets that are viewable on iOS and Android devices without leaving the original screen. Only select artists on iTunes will work in the new feature as of now, with Foo Fighters’ new single “Something from Nothing” being the first to get a Twitter Audio Card.
 
Vice Media will roll out local-language edition of its YouTube and web news channel in seven countries in the next few months. Vice will launch in Spain, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Mexico with video-focused newsrooms. The millennial-focused company announced the expansion after receiving $500 million in funding from A+E Networks and venture-capital firm Technology Crossover Ventures. Vice News is also the fasted growing news channel in YT’s history with more than 150 million views and more than one million subscribers since its launched in March.
 
As previously reported, YouTube celeb Shay Carl debuted series ShayFV, the collaboration with America’s Funniest Home Videos, on Maker.TV. Carl is known for posting videos on his own YT show Shaytards that are similar to the wacky entries on AFV. ShayFV will roll out a total of six episodes, with a new ep out every Sunday.
 
Ulive, the Scripps Networks Interactive digital platform, debuted a series on YouTube called This is a Show for Parents of Gay Kids, based on the bestseller This is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids by Dannielle Owens-Reid and Kristin Russo. The authors serve as hosts along with Matthew C. Mills and Chelsea Stoutenburgh, as they help parents better understand their LGBTQ children. A new ep will hit Ulive Family every Friday.

TODAY Show surpassed Good Morning America on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in followers last week. The @TODAYShow now has 2,436,926 followers versus @GMA’s 2,435,795 followers and is growing at 6.46% while @GMA is growing at 3.19%. On Facebook, TODAY has 3,904,722 followers and GMA has 3,736,109 followers. Finally, TODAY on Instagram has 514,448 followers compared to GMA’s 270,801 followers. “Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or the Orange Room­these platforms not only give us a mechanism to share our content on both the broadcast and TODAY.com, but we also get instant feedback on what we’re doing right and wrong,” TODAY.com Digital Strategy Producer Zoe Marcus told Cynopsis.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS
 

Google took a page from Facebook and unveiled a new text-messaging app called Messenger, which functions similarly to that of FB. Google already has a messaging app – Google Hangouts – which is for Android users, but 9to5Google reports that the big G wants to give its community more choices. FB also has multiple messaging apps, of course, due to acquisition WhatsApp (600 million users and no. 3 in the app store charts) and Facebook Messenger (200 million users and no. 1 in the app store charts).
