PROGRAMMING
Luckily for Amazon, it’s one of those few companies that can afford to lose $40 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s how much the company spent on an untitled series from director David O. Russell, which would have starred Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro. But to Amazon’s misfortune, the series had one other big-name credit: producer Harvey Weinstein. It also didn’t help that Amazon Studios chief Roy Price – who picked up the series – was himself publicly accused of sexual harassment last week. The allegations came from Isa Dick Hackett, a producer on Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle. Price was swiftly suspended from the company, and resigned this week. The now-scrapped series would have cost a reported $160 million to make. The $40 million that Amazon already poured into the project went into pre-production.
Facebook has ordered a new English-language remake of Skam, a popular teen-oriented drama series that ran in Norway for four seasons. The news was first reported by Variety. Concluding in January of this year, the show was distributed online daily before being repackaged for TV. Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment will produce the English-language version of Skam (English translation: Shame). The company snatched up the U.S. rights to the show earlier this year. The Skam remake will be available through Facebook’s Watch platform.
Eurosport, the European TV sports net owned by Discovery Communications, is partnering with Snapchat for the Olympic Games. (The network owns the European TV and multimedia rights for the 2018-2024 Olympics.) Olympics-related posts, curated from user-submitted Snaps, will appear on Snapchat’s Our Stories section during the Games. In addition, Eurosport will create its own “ Publisher Stories.” The content will be available in multiple countries, spanning numerous languages. Discovery will also have a sales team in place in Europe, selling ad packages for the app.
APPS + PLATFORMS
The Google Home smart speaker now supports YouTube TV, the OTT-based TV service that Google launched earlier this year. Google Home owners can use the speaker to control YouTube TV with voice commands. For instance, users can tell the device to play a certain channel, record a program, or turn on captions. Users can also use voice commands to play, pause, rewind, or fast-forward. YouTube TV is now close to completing its rollout in the U.S. Its first major national ad campaign will launch later this month during the World Series.
BET Digital is launching a new video “Flash Briefing” skill for platforms that support Amazon’s Alexa. Devices like the Amazon Echo Show will now allow users to access BET Breaks, the network’s daily digital video series exploring music, celebrities, style and sports. The BET Breaks Flash Briefing skill is available in the U.S. and the U.K.
Happy Halloween. Snapchat parent Snap Inc. is now selling a costume based on the “dancing hot dog,” the goofy little augmented reality filter that debuted on Snapchat earlier this year. You can buy the costume on Amazon, but be warned: at $79.99, it’s a tad pricey for a hot dog.
The Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp will soon enable live location sharing. The new tool lets users tell selected friends where they are in real time. Friends will receive a map that displays where a user is at a particular moment. Users can choose just how long they want to share their location info, whether it’s for minutes or hours. The new tool – which is similar to Apple’s Find My Friends app – will likely be used to coordinate parties and get-togethers. But the feature also has some safety applications – for instance, making sure that a friend arrives at home safely. WhatsApp says that the feature will debut on both Android and iOS devices within “the coming weeks.”
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
Mixed reality startup Magic Leap is getting a fresh infusion of cash. Confirming a September report from Bloomberg, the company announced that it has raised $502 million in new round of Series D equity funding. As Bloomberg reported, the Singapore investment firm Temasek Holdings led the round. The famously secretive company – which has been developing a set of advanced augmented reality glasses – has now raised over $1.8 billion to date. On top of that, the company recently authorized the sale of 37 million new shares of stock – meaning that it could soon raise over $1 billion more. According to Bloomberg’s September report, Magic Leap’s headset is likely to ship within the next six months.
RESEARCH
Not all binge-viewers are created equal. Netflix identified a class of viewers that the company has termed “binge racers” – people who watch a full season of a new show within 24 hours of its debut. The company said that its two most “binge-raced” originals are Fuller House and the four-part miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Marvel’s The Defenders came in at third, according to the Netflix. All told, Netflix says that 8.4 million subscribers have “binge-raced” at some point. That’s a little less than eight percent of the company’s worldwide subscriber base, which adds up to about 109 million members. Still, the company says that the “binge-racing” trend is accelerating.

Ever heard of “bone-conducting” headphones? They conduct sound through the wearer’s cheekbones instead of plugging directly into the ears. The sound quality isn’t quite as good, but the headphones enable users to hear their real-world surroundings. CNET took a look at the newest bone-conducting headphones fro AfterShokz. You can check the video here.
