Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 16, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler announced that the HBO Go streaming service will be made available to those without a pay-TV subscription starting in 2015. During his speech at Time Warner’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday, Plepler said, “It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO….there are 80 million homes that don’t have HBO, and we will use all the means at our disposal to go after them….It is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped.”

The HBO Go news caused a 4% drop in Netflix shares. They then bounced back, but dipped again in light of its Q3 report. Netflix stock plunged 23 percent, or $100, after announcing it had added only 980,000 new domestic customers, instead of the expected 1.37 million. Revenue was $1.22 billion, versus the predicted $1.41 billion.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Fans of Central Perk, get excited: Netflix is bringing all ten seasons – 236 episodes – of Friends to the service on Jan. 1, 2015. This is the first time the series has been on any streaming service.

Oprah.com announced a partnership with newsletter The Skimm to produce a six-episode weekly web series titled Things to Know. Skimm founders Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg will discuss top-trending topics in episodes that roll out every Wednesday for six weeks, along with an interactive mid-term election guide on Oprah.com….

YouTube channel SciShow launched a new World’s Most Asked Questions series that will run until Oct. 28. The ten-parter will explore such subjects as: What is love? How do I grow a beard? and more. The Vlog Brothers creator and co-founder of VidCon, Hank Green, founded the channel.

The documentary Virunga will premiere on Netflix on Nov. 7. The doc examines the oil, poachers and war crisis in Congo and its effect on the remaining mountain gorillas at Virunga National Park.

AD PLATFORMS

Simulmedia and Nielsen Catalina Solutions have partnered on a license agreement for the NCS marketing platform AdVantics On Demand. “Marketers want a way to tie what they know about their audiences to the media they buy,” Simulmedia Chief Marketing Officer David Cooperstein told Cynopsis. “After learning about that in digital media, they want the ability to do it at scale with TV. Working with Nielsen Catalina, Simulmedia is able to go beyond connecting the consumer’s transactions to TV viewing patters to actually buy ad space where those consumers are most likely to be watching TV.”

YuMe announced an enhanced Click-to-Ngage ad unit on connected TV platforms for its launch partner BMW of North America. Ngage+ will reach consumers through multiple CTV platforms, by allowing for long form content distribution and more content with photos, videos and promotions, as well as measuring how consumers are engaging with branded programming.

Kantar Media unveiled a new private marketplace inventory from Rubicon Project’s publisher and mobile app developer customers at SRDS.com. “Now buyers have a centralized way to view, compare and purchase programmatic inventory from top publishers and mobile app developers,” Kantar Media SRDS Managing Director of Emerging Media Dina Srinivasan said. “It also gives media sellers the ability to expose their inventory packages to 15,000 media and marketing decision makers from hundreds of agencies, including the top four agency holding companies.”

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

AOL Video is now available on Google’s Android TV. The connected TV will include access to content from Miramax, TechCrunch, HuffPost Live, Makers and AOL’s originals like Emmy-nominated series Park Bench and The Future Starts Here. AOL’s video library is now available on 16 connected TV and OTT devices, including Apple TV, Roku and Samsung.

A+E Networks and Activision launched the Duck Dynasty video game, with such virtual player pursuits as airboat racing, shotgun golf and frog catching, on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 and Nintendo 3DS. For a limited time, purchasers can also play Uncle Si’s Redneck Logic trivia challenge and have a shot at a bonus in-game reward.

A third of moviegoers say they would buy a movie ticket after watching a trailer or ad online, according to new research from Unruly. “One of the most interesting findings is that trailers have a unique sharing pattern compared to other online ads,” Vice President of Marketing and Insights, U.S. Devra Prywes told Cynopsis. “Movie promos are the fastest-shared type of brand – which means that they have even less time than other sectors to reach relevant audiences.”
Other key findings from The Science of Sharing: Movies included:
Video drives ROI: 31 percent of moviegoers who watched a trailer would purchase a ticket to see the film. 28 percent said they would rent it, and 12 percent would buy it.
Film-related content is launched too early to generate opening weekend buzz: Trailers get 42 percent of their total shares on social media within the first 24 hours, compared to music videos, which peak after three days.
Most shared movie content is not trailers: The top three movie promos were prankverts, micro-movies or music videos.

EXEC MOVES

RLJ Entertainment hired Matt Graham as Vice President of Acorn TV. He was most recently Co-Founder and Sr. Director of PBS Digital Studios.

The current Executive Vice President of MTV and General Manager of MTV2 and mtvU, Chris McCarthy, is now also Logo TV’s General Manager. McCarthy worked as interim General Manager since Logo TV became aligned with MTV in late 2013, and a result, 2014 was the highest-rated and most-watched in Logo TV’s history, up nearly 20 percent from the year prior.
