IN THE NEWS

Viacom formed a special committee of independent directors on Friday to evaluate a potential merger with CBS. According to TheWrap, CBS is organizing a special committee of its own, too. National Amusements, Inc. (NAI), the parent company of both publicly traded media corporations, asked the two firms to explore re-combining into one. Viacom and CBS spun off from one another in 2005

There’s a new reboot in the works – think cat fights and shoulder pads – and it’s headed to The CW. The network is bringing back a modern-day version of Dynasty, the iconic series that was produced by Aaron Spelling. Project hails from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who have teamed with Revenge writer/producer Sallie Patrick and the original series creators Esther Shapiro and husband Richard Shapiro.

Animated spy Archer’s days are numbered on FX, but not for a long while. During an appearance on the Modern School of Film’s Murmur podcast, show creator Adam Reed announced he plans to end the comedy – which returns for Season 8 in 2017 – after Season 10. Originally, he had planned to finish the show after its eighth season, “but then I had a brain explosion of a way that I could do three more seasons and really keep my interest up.”

After two seasons, NBC cancelled Aquarius, the drama starring David Duchovny based on the Charles Manson murders. The series, which debuted in the summer of 2015, saw its ratings drop when it was moved from Thursday to the low-trafficked Saturday night.

In other NBC news, the network decided not to move forward with half-hour comedy Mail Order Family. The concept was met with disapproval by Asian American groups concerned with stereotyping of Filipino women.

Showtime released a new teaser for Twin Peaks featuring composer Angelo Badalamenti and his theme music from the show’s original run. Badalamenti returns as composer for the new series, which bows in 2017. Teaser is available on youtube.

Winners were announced for the 6th Annual Streamy Awards on Saturday. The show,
hosted by King Bach, will be live streamed on Youtube on Tuesday, October 4 at 9p.  YouTube stars Grace Helbig, Roman Atwood, and actor Robby Novak (a.k.a. Kid President) were among the winners taking home awards for Brand Campaign, Pranks, and Kids and Family, respectively.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The F Word is headed to FOX, and it’s totally G-rated. The network ordered the live food variety show from its very own reality star Gordon Ramsay. It marks the first series for Studio Ramsay, the independent production company the chef launched earlier this year and hails from the company’s joint venture with All3Media. It is based on Ramsay’s hit UK series of the same name.

NBC bought A Year to Remember from Telefe USA and Kapital Entertainment. The project is based on Telefe’s telenovela Un Ano Para Recordar and will be written by Michael Foley (How to Get Away with Murder). The crime drama centers on a Boston homicide detective who’s confronted by her husband over an affair she’s having with her partner, and accidentally kills him.

MTV and Viacom Velocity, the company’s in-house creative agency, named A$AP Rocky, backed by his creative company AWGE, as Creative Director of MTV LABS. The first-look deal gives Rocky and AWGE the opportunity to create original content, experiment with new formats, and develop branded content for advertisers in partnership with Viacom Velocity. “MTV is a name we grew up with – everyone knows them as innovators and champions of building artists’ careers,” said Rocky in a statement.

Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot) partnered with Cathy Konrad‘s Tree Line Film and Ashok Amritraj‘s Hyde Park Television to adapt Dean Koontz’s Dark Rivers of the Heart. The psychological thriller follows an ex-Marine, haunted by a tortured past, who is on the run with a troubled woman who witnessed the murder of her husband and parents.

FX ordered Snowfall, a drama inspired by the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. Production on the 10-episode first season begins this month to and debut in 2017.

Sundance TV teamed with ITV on six-part series Liar, from Two Brothers Pictures. Created and written by Harry and Jack Williams, the thriller stars Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four). Shooting begins in November.

Veteran showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters’ production company, Fazekas & Butters, sold two hour long projects to ABC. One, penned by them, has a Disney theme parks tie-in. Another, written by filmmaker Nisha Ganatra, explores the history of a multi-generational Indian American family. The company has also set up projects at Freeform and Amazon and is developing a series based on Wesley Chu’s Tao science fiction book series.
