Facebook is changing its corporate name to Meta. Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at Connect, the company’s annual hardware event, on Thursday. The move had been hinted at in recent weeks and follows the company’s plan to invest billions of dollars in the next iteration of computing, which the social media giant’s CEO refers to as the metaverse.

Michelle Obama is heading to primetime. The former First Lady is set to guest star on ABC’s “black-ish” when it returns for its eighth and final season in 2022. She’ll be appearing as herself.

Abby Huntsman, who had a brief run as a conservative co-host on ABC’s “The View” from 2018 to 2020, shared a new reason for her departure. In her podcast “I Wish Somebody Told Me,” which debuted on Thursday, she said that the “executives in charge” of the talk show had created an environment that “was all about money and the tabloids… You would see people act in ways that were not okay, that was very much part of the toxic environment on ‘The View,’ and here we were going on the air criticizing others for toxic culture.” The former Fox News personality originally said she left the show to join and assist the Utah Gubernatorial race of her father, Jon Huntsman.

ViacomCBS is set to acquire majority interest in Fox TeleColumbia & Estudios TeleMexico. The investment expands ViacomCBS’ position as Spanish language content producer, feeding Spanish language content to streaming platforms Paramount+, Pluto TV and linear networks worldwide.

MotorTrend Group and Mecum Auction struck a multi-year agreement that delivers exclusive live coverage of Mecum Auctions on MotorTrend+ and MotorTrend TV beginning in January 2022. MotorTrend will broadcast and stream more than 160 hours of live coverage across ten MECUM AUCTIONS.

Nominations for the 2021 American Music Awards were revealed on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and Spotify’s “The Get Up,” on Thursday. Olivia Rodrigo led the pack with seven nominations, including Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year, while five-time AMA winner The Weeknd earned six nominations, including Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video and Favorite Pop Song. The show airs live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 21 at 8p.

After a virtual event in January 2021, NATPE is returning to Miami from January 18-22, 2022. Once again, the National Association of Television Program Executives will welcome attendees from around the globe

Family Entertainment Television has launched FMC (Family Movie Classics) on Dish Network. The 24/7 classic movie channel is now available to nearly 9 million DISH TV subscribers. “This is a very proud day in our company’s history,” said President and CEO Drew Sumrall. “We continually strive to bring good, wholesome entertainment to American families. FMC is a major step toward achieving that goal, and with DISH TV as a launch partner, the future is very bright for this network.”

Fox News Channel has dedicated a studio to Rupert Murdoch, the man who launched it in 1996. The space previously known as “Studio F” has been renamed “Studio M” in honor of Murdoch, who continues working as chairman of parent company Fox Corp.

CBS News and Stations will deliver multi-platform coverage of Election Day, Tuesday, November 2. CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 live streaming news service, will have reporters on-the-ground in Virginia and New Jersey following the governors’ races, as well as a team of journalists in-studio and across the country offering context, analysis, poling and reporting as the votes come in. In addition, CBSN will stream a special edition of daily politics show “Red & Blue” at 5p

The Country Music Association, alongside the CMA Foundation, will welcome some special guests at “The 55th Annual CMA Awards.” The CMA Foundation’s 2020 Music Teachers of Excellence, a group of 30 inspiring and dedicated music educators, will be celebrated during the ceremony, airing Wednesday, November 10 at 8p on ABC.

Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, won the worldwide rights to the untitled memoir that will be published in fall 2022. Perry best known for his role of Chandler Bing on “Friends,” recently reunited with the show’s cast for the HBO Max special, “Friends: The Reunion.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

In his first television role in seven years, Martin Lawrence will headline a reimagined English-language adaptation of Israeli series, “Nehama.” Lawrence will portray the title character in the not-yet-titled dark comedy, as a happily married father of five who quits his job in high tech to chase his original love of stand-up comedy. Lawrence will also produce the project via his RunTelDat Entertainment production company, alongside 24 Drafts Studio and Topic Studios.

Stephen Colbert’s business relationship with CBS Studios is expanding. The studio has signed “The Late Show” host to a three-year, first-look production deal that will give it rights to all TV and streaming projects created and developed by Colbert’s Spartina Productions.

A+E Studios has inked a first-look deal with Alyssa Milano. The agreement was sparked by A+E acquiring Milan’s pilot script, “Things I’m Seeing Without You,” which she adapted from the young adult novel by Peter Bognanni. Under the pact, Milano will write and produce projects for A+E Studios.

The CW has set two variety specials with Taye Diggs, Ne-You and Eric Bellinger: “The Black Pack: We Three Kings” and “The Black Pack: Excellence.” Both will feature music, dance and comedy. “The Black Pack: We Three Kings” debuts Monday, November 29 at 8p.

CBS has put “Never Tell” back in development with new writer Barbara Hall, who created “Madam Secretary.” The drama is based on the book by Selena Montgomery (Stacey Abrams’ pen name) and hails from Abrams, Nina Tassler and Denise Di Novi’s PatMa Productions, and CBS Studios.

FilmRise has commissioned “Making a Serial Killer” from FirstLookTV. The original true crime series explores what makes someone kill again and again. The deal gives FilmRise all rights for North America, German-speaking Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Jimmy Fallon’s “That’s My Jam” debuts Monday, November 29 at 10p on NBC. “The Voice” coaches Ariana Grande, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend will guest on the hourlong music and comedy variety game show that draws inspiration from the most popular “Tonight Show” games.

“Meet Your Makers Showdown,” starring Chrissy Metz and Leann Rimes, debuts Saturday, November 27 on Discovery+. Creations designed by tartisans from across the country take the spotlight in the crafty competition series hosted by Metz. LeAnn Rimes will serve as an inspiration judge.

Paramount+ has set Vanessa Williams, Michelle Visage, Trixie Mattel and Leona Lewis as judges for “Queen of the Universe.” The drag queen singing competition series, hosted by Graham Norton, hails from MTV Entertainment Studios and RuPaul’s Drag Race producers World of Wonder and is scheduled to debut on Thursday, December 2.

Netflix renewed “Elite” for a sixth season ahead of its Season 5 premiere. The Spanish YA drama, created and written by Carlos Montero and Dario Madrona, is one of the streamer’s best performing Spanish originals.

Auctioneers Dan and Laura Dotson lead buyers through unit after unit filled with surprises in the new season of “Storage Wars.” The series returns Tuesday, November 2 at 9p.

The Weather Channel is introducing two new original series. “Uncharted Adventure,” premiering Sunday, November 7 at 9p, takes viewers on a journey through the eyes adventure traveler and Marine biologist Mike Corey. “Frozen Gold,” debuting Sunday, November 14 at 8p, centers on six American gold hunters searching for a fortune in Greenland.

BYUtv premieres a contemporary adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s “The Canterville Ghost” on Sunday, October 31 at 9p. The four-episode limited series was produced in the U.K. by BBC Studios Productions.

Acorn TV debuts “The Madame Blanc Mysteries” on Monday, November 15. Created by and starring UK actress Sally Lindsay, the six-episode series follows antiques dealer Jean White (Lindsay), who, nearly bankrupt after her husband’s sudden death, begins investigating what happened.

It’s time for a TLC wedding. Amy Roloff of “Little People, Big World” will marry fiancé, Chris Marek, in “Amy & Chris’s Happily Ever After.” The two-hour special bows Tuesday, November 9 at 9p.

Oxygen’s “Murdered & Missing in Montana” brings awareness to crimes committed against indigenous women. The 90-minute documentary airs Friday, November 12 at 8p.

“The Real Charlie Chaplin” bows Saturday, December 11 at 8p on Showtime. The feature-length documentary takes a look at the man who became a legend.

“The Battle Never Ends,” a documentary celebrating Disabled American Veterans, is set to air across Sinclair Broadcast Group stations. It showcases the organization’s 100 years of advocacy on our nation’s ill and injured vets and dedication to serving past, present and future disabled veterans.

“The Wimbledon Kidnapping,” the story behind the first ransom case that galvanized modern Great Britain, premieres Tuesday, November 16 on Sundance Now. The documentary centers on Rupert Murdoch and the mysterious disappearance of Muriel McKay.

STREAMING

BBC Select announced its first co-production, “History of Mother Earth: Gaia Uncovered” with historian Bettany Hughes. The show premieres on the documentary streaming service alongside “Nature and Us: A History through Art” on Monday, November 1 in the U.S. and Canada.

ScreenHits TV is breaking into the live linear channel space globally. The streaming aggregator will offer access to the 24/7 live feeds of Bloomberg Television, its enchanced Bloomberg TV+ (excluding the U.S.) and global streaming news channel, Quicktake.

TECH TALK

Comcast inked a deal with Apple to bring the Apple TV app to Xfinity X1, Flex and XClass TV platforms. Under the agreement, Comcast’s Xfinity Stream app, which provides access to its pay-TV service, and Sky Go app in Europe and the U.K. will be launching on Apple TV set-top boxes. A rep for Comcast said the app would launch on its video platforms in “the coming months.”

Uberall released a new report, “The State of Online Review Fraud,” which analyzed four million local business reviews on Google, Facebook, Yelp and Tripadvisor. It found that Google had the highest average percentage (10.47%) of fake reviews. Next, in descending order, were Yelp (7.1%), Tripadvisor (5.2%) and Facebook (4.9%). In addition, the report revealed that 67% of US consumers say fake online reviews are a growing problem.

GOING GLOBAL

A documentary film about Freddie Mercury is the works at the BBC. The final chapter of the Queen legend’s life will be told in a BBC2 doc from Rogan Productions. “Freddie Mercury: The Final Act” comes 30 years after the superstar died from complications of AIDS.

Abacus Media acquired worldwide distribution rights to “It Takes a Flood.” The Docsville Studios Production takes viewers to the heart of the floods that have been hitting the UK in recent years as a result of climate change.

Zodiac Kids secured a key sale with KiKA Germany for Mumfie. The animated comedy series is based on Britt Allcroft’s Magic Adventures of Mumfie (creator of “Thomas & Friends” and the film “Thomas & The Magic Railroad.”
