IN THE NEWS

Jon Stewart will host and executive produce a single-issue current affairs series for Apple TV+, part of his first-look deal with the streamer. Former HBO CEO Richard Plepler will exec produce through his EDEN Productions.

By 2025, more than half of US broadband households will live without a MVPD service, according to The Diffusion Group. Pay-TV services will lose 36% of their 2020 subscriber base, up roughly four-fold from the prior 5-year period (-9.5%). The forecast reflects the rate of decline in legacy MVPD subscriptions – which exceeded TDG’s worst-case scenario – and consumer research revealing cord-cutting proclivities have reached a record high. In 2017, TDG forecast year-end 2020 legacy MVPD households would be between 83.5 million (low) and 87.0 million (mid), most likely at the lower end of this range. Legacy MPVD subscribers at year-end 2019 totaled 81 million, below TDG’s least-optimistic forecasts.

The COVID-19 pandemic is leading to abbreviated seasons for many scripted series, thanks to slower production and higher costs. So far, CBS has cut back full season, 22-episode orders for CBS Studios shows NCIS: LA and The Neighborhood to 18 episodes, and Blue Bloods, Bull, Magnum P.I., NCIS, NCIS: NOLA, and SEAL Team to 16 episodes. The Unicorn remains unchanged at 13 episodes.

A drop in marketing spend will lead US agencies to eliminate 52,000 jobs through 2021, projects Forrester, leading to a minimum 5% increase in small and mid-size boutiques and start-ups that deliver marketing, ad tech and martech solutions. “These new companies could be specific to performance marketing or ad tech,” said Jay Pattisall, Principal Analyst Forrester. “I don’t think we’ll see media buying companies, but rather technologies that work within.”

Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen and director Nick Stoller (“Neighbors”) are reuniting for Apple TV+ comedy “Platonic,” produced by Sony Pictures Television. The series follows former best friends who reconnect as adults.

Singer/actress Demi Lovato will host the 2020 E!’s People’s Choice Awards, airing live on Sunday, November 15 at 9p. The ceremony will present awards in 44 categories.

Charter Communications hit its goal of making 50,000 homes safer and healthier by the end of 2020 through its philanthropic initiative, Spectrum Housing Assist. Charter employee volunteers working with nonprofit partner Homefront reached the target number early, on October 24, by repairing two homes in Stamford, where Charter’s corporate headquarters is located, as well as completing exterior improvements at the local Boys & Girls Club. “From day one our employees have embraced the spirit of Spectrum Housing Assist,” said Tom Rutledge, Chairman and CEO of Charter. “Since we launched SHA six years ago, thousands of Charter employees have donated their time and skills, and by achieving this major milestone of improving 50,000 homes, they have made a tangible and meaningful impact in the communities we serve.”

Young, diverse audiences are leaning into local news, according to Nielsen Local Watch Report: “Diverse, Young and Informed: Today’s Growing News Audience.” While the time consumers spend watching TV news has been rising since the fall of last year, it peaked at just under nine-and-a-half hours each week in April of this year, the height of the stay-at-home period in the US.
