IN THE NEWS
With no carriage agreement in sight, YouTube and YouTube TV may well be yanked from Roku devices, warns Google. “Since we haven’t been able to continue our conversations in good faith, our partnership for all new Roku devices will unfortunately end on December 9,” Google said in a statement. “We are, however, giving Roku the ability to continue distributing both YouTube and YouTube TV apps to all existing users to make sure they are not impacted.” Responded Roku, which has accused Google of anticompetitive conduct, “While not surprising, this kind of blatant retaliation and monopoly conduct is likely why the U.S. Department of Justice and 30 State Attorneys General are investigating Google for violating fair competition laws.”
Dave Chappelle is willing to talk to Netflix employees offended by transphobic jokes in his comedy special, “The Closer.” Controversy over the special led to protests at the streamer last week. “Both sides of the street are talking and Dave is listening,” said a rep for the comedian. “At some point, when everyone is open, I’m sure our communities will come together. As Dave said in his special, ‘No more jokes about transgenders until we can all laugh together.'”
Several media companies made it on Newsweek’s Most Loved Workplaces for 2021. Spotify was #1, with employees noting “big on discussing company mission and values,” and benefits like six months paid parental leave. ViacomCBS came in at #29, with kudos for town hall meetings, and A+E Networks landed at #40, lauded as “a great place for LGBTQ+ employees.”
Internal Facebook documents show the degree to which the company was aware that extremist groups on its site were trying to polarize American voters before the election, and that Facebook employees believed the company could have done more to stop it, reported The New York Times and others on Friday night. In a blog post, Facebook VP of Integrity Guy Rosen noted the measures Facebook took to protect the platform, and said of critics who blame the social media site for the January 6 attack on the Capitol, “We are a significant social media platform so it’s only natural for content about major events like that to show up on Facebook. But responsibility for the insurrection itself falls squarely on the insurrectionists who broke the law and those who incited them.”

ABC’s “The Rookie” has banned “live” guns on the set, in a move likely to be replicated after last week’s tragic shooting on the set of the film “Rust.” “As of today, it is now policy on The Rookie that all gunfire on set will be Air Soft guns with CG muzzle flashes added in post. There will be no more ‘live’ weapons on the show,” wrote “The Rookie” showrunner in a memo to staff obtained by THR. “The safety our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much risk.”

IN MEMORIAM
Actor Peter Scolari died October 22 after battling cancer. He was 66. Scolari rose to fame in “Bosom Buddies,” and appeared in numerous series, including “Newhart,” “Murphy Brown” and “Evil,” winning an Emmy for “Girls.” Robert King (“The Good Fight”) said Scolari “was one of the funniest—sneakily funny—actors we’ve worked with. He always took a nothing scene and found different ways to twist it, and throw in odd pauses that made it jump….He was just wonderful.”
