Nielsen kicked off Advertising Week with a new look. The measurement company unveiled a brand campaign that “represents a commitment to innovation and the company’s role and purpose of powering a better media future for all people.” Following the sale of its Global Connect business in March 2021, Nielsen is now focused on delivering digital-first and global-first media solutions in measurement, audience outcomes and content services. “The rebranding marks a new Nielsen both inside the company and out, with a strategy hyper-focused on the global audience and the changing media environment,” said Jamie Moldafsky, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. “Nielsen’s core values of inclusion, courage and growth, along with its clear strategy, will power the company’s transformation as we partner with the industry and our clients to help them better understand how evolving audiences consume media and find content.”
ViacomCBS and Altice USA announced an agreement for the continued carriage of ViacomCBS’ portfolio of networks for Altice USA’s Optimum and Suddenlink customers. This time around, Altice USA has rights to ViacomCBS’ suite of streaming services, including Paramount+, SHOWTIME OTT, Pluto TV, BET+ and Noggin.
Sinclair Broadcast Group’ operations were hit by a cyberattack. In an SEC filing, the company revealed that it had identified a “potential security incident” over the weekend as “certain servers and workstations” in its environment were encrypted with ransomware. Some office and operational networks were disrupted, and data was stolen from the company’s network. Sinclair is working “to determine what information the data contained and will take other actions as appropriate based on its review.”
The Sundance Institute named Ava Davis (“The Waltz”), StormMiguel Florez (“Welcome to Roswell”), River Gallo (“Ponyboi”), Carol Grant (“Eurydice V”), Mitchell “MiSha” Owens (“The Boy from Across Town”) and Savannah Ward (“Meta”) as the fellows for its inaugural Trans Possibilities Intensive, focused on advancing the careers of transgender storytellers of color. The six creatives were nominated by the institute’s allied organizations.

It only took 40 years…Hulu has ordered “History of the World, Part II,” a follow-up variety series to the Mel Brooks 1981 film “History of the World, Part I.” Brooks is a writer and executive producer on the project, which is expected to begin production in the spring of 2022. “I can’t wait to once more tell the real truth about all the phony baloney stories the world has been conned into believing are History!” said Brooks.
Mel Gibson will star in “The Continental,” the “John Wick” prequel set at Starz. The series, originally ordered in 2018, explores the inner workings of a hotel that’s a refuge for assassins.

Ina Garten has expanded her relationship with Discovery Inc. The Barefoot Contessa has inked an exclusive multi-year deal to create content across all the company’s platforms. First up: “Be My Guest” (wt), a series in development for 2022 that has Garten welcoming viewers into her home, including an hour-long extended cut on discovery+, a half hour episode on Food Network and a companion podcast.
Netflix renewed “Family Reunion” for a third and final season. The comedy series’ writers, Adrienne Carter and Arthur Harris, have been promoted to executive producers and showrunners for the final run. In addition, Robert Prinz will serve as an executive producer.
Mark Gordon Pictures is developing anthology series “Girls Can’t Shoot (& Other Lies),” based on the international bestselling essay collection Feminists Don’t Wear Pink (and Other Lies), reports Deadline. The cast for the project includes Beanie Feldstein, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Kat Dennings, Jameela Jamil and Lolly Adefope.
HBO is moving forward with “Blood Sugar,” starring and executive produced by Betty Gilpin (“GLOW”), from Annapurna. Written by Duke Merriman (“Monos”) and Preston Thompson (“Kids In Love”), the series explores the rise to fame of Margot Schultz, who was laughed off the stage of “Shark Tank” along with her frozen food business.
Viral creator community r/PhotoshotBattles has partnered with Adobe for a Reddit Live Original that will combine original content with a multi-day comedic competition event shared though daily livestreams hosted on Reddit. “PsBattles Live” will facilitate daily photo-editing battles for all Reddit users, with challenges culminating in daily one-hour livestreams hosted by comedian Patti Harrison (“Shrill). Bunim-Murray Productions and Kreative Inc. are producing.
Casting Notes: Diany Rodriguez (“Law & Order: Organized Crime”) will heavily recur in Season 9 of NBC’s “The Blacklist.”… Cathy Mueller will reprise her role as Abbie Cornish in the fourth season of Amazon Prime Video’s “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” …Meena Rayann (“Game of Thrones”), Jack Mullarkey (“Vikings: Valhalla)” and Richard Clothier (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) will recur in Netflix drama series “Warrior Run,” while Jonathan Tucker (“Debris,” “Kingdom”) has been tapped as a lead opposite Michelle Monaghan in Netflix’s “Echoes.”

Jeffrey Wright reprises his role as narrator when “While The Rest Of Us Die” returns Thursday, October 21 on VICE TV. The show’s second season asks why life feels so insecure in the wealthiest country in the world.
“Space Titans: Musk, Bezos, Branson” begins streaming Thursday, November 4 on discovery+. Created in partnership with The Washington Post, the series will follow the entrepreneurs who are putting billions of dollars on the line to launch a revolution in space.
COMING UP
“Adele One Night Only” is set to air Sunday, November 14 at 8:30p on CBS. The two-hour special bows five days before the release of the performer’s fourth album, 30, and will include her first new material in six years. The special will also be available on Global and stream on STACKTV and the Global TV App.
The 2021 “Soul Train Awards” will be presented from the first time from the Apollo in NYC. The awards show, recognizing the best in Soul, R&B and Hip Hop, premieres Sunday, November 28 at 8p on BET and BET Her.
Three new movies have been added to GAC Family’s “12 Movies of Christmas.” Kicking off October 30, the stunt will feature an original Christmas movie each Saturday night on GAC Family. Additions include “My Angel’s Christmas List,” starring Chad Michael Murray and Jessica Lowndes; “A Lot Like Christmas,” starring Maggie Lawson and Christopher Russell; and “Joy for Christmas,” starring Cindy Busby and Sam Page.
A new character will be added to “Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten” during the comedy adventure’s season one finale on Friday, October 22. Star and exec producer Arnold Schwarzenegger will introduce Emerson, a wheelchair user and exchange student from England who has a secret super power.
AXS TV presents a “Heavy Metal Halloween” programming event on Saturday, October 30 at 12p, featuring profiles, documentaries, concerts and more. Prior to the stunt’s kickoff, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons sit down with Dan Rather in a pair of “The Big Interview” episodes starting at 10a.
STREAMING
Roku is bringing comedy series “Children Ruin Everything” to the US in an exclusive deal with New Metric Media. The new half-hour comedy, which will stream for free on Roku Channel, is created by Kurt Smeaton (“Schitt’s Creek,” “Kim’s Convenience”) and will air on Bell Media’s CTV network in Canada next spring. Roku will release all eight episodes of the series following the full broadcast in the Great White North.
Redbox will begin offering over 20 new FAST channels in the coming weeks, including America’s Funniest Home Videos, three Sony Canal Spanish language channels, Electric Now and the Wu Tang Collection. In addition, Redbox signed an agreement with Cox Media Group to stream 10 live local news channels from markets that include Seattle, Atlanta, and Orlando. The company also signed a deal with Yahoo! Finance to begin offering their streaming business news channel.
Fox Weather, Fox News Media’s AVOD streaming service launching October 25, has added to its on-air team. Marissa Torres, Ian Oliver, Kiyanna Lewis and Jane Minar will helm programming across the platform, while Brandy Campbell will serve as multimedia journalist.

Advertisers in the Americas saw progress in brand safety as they adopted sophisticated risk prevention strategies, according to the IAS Media Quality Report for 1H21. Global brand risk dropped below 4%, with display being the safest ad format. For desktop display campaigns, brand risk dropped in Brazil (-3.9 percentage points), Mexico (-3.6pp), Canada (-3.4pp), and the US (-2.4pp). CTV was determined to be the most viewable ad format, at 93.2%.
AWARDS UPDATES
Nominees for the Critics Choice Documentary Awards were announced on Monday. Two directors making their debuts as documentarians, Jessica Kingdon (“Ascension”) and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, were among the lot with both films receiving six nods each. In addition, National Geographic has two documentaries scoring five nominations apiece: “The Rescue” and “Becoming Cousteau.”
Luke Bryan will host the “2021 CMA Awards” on Wednesday, November 10 on ABC. It marks the first time the two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year will MC the ceremony. Bryan will also be the show’s sole co-host, after nearly two decades of co-hosts.
Westwood One announced that “Country Countdown USA” host Lon Helton was honored with the “Broadcast Personality of the Year” Award for the Weekly National Show by the Country Music Association. The winners were announced in advance of the 55th Annual CMA Awards Show to be held November 10 in Nashville.

Vacation club brand Club Wyndham has partnered with Hallmark Channel for the net’s “Countdown to Christmas” campaign, with three custom-designed suites at Club Wyndham’s timeshare resorts in NYC, Nashville, and Vail, CO, based on movies from Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” lineup. Guests will have access to festive experiences specific to their chosen destination.
In celebration of the premiere of its new movie “Highway to Heaven,” Lifetime has partnered with The Art of Elysium and artist Colette Miller for a seven-day interactive installation of Colette’s Global Angel Wings Project. Initially created as interactive street art in Los Angeles in 2012, the life-sized angel wings were painted throughout the city to “remind humanity that we are the angels of this earth.” The wings will be on display through November 9. Starring Jill Scott and Barry Watson, “Highway to Heaven” bows Saturday, November 6 at 8p.

Scripps’ national “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign will distribute over 200,000 books to kids in low-income households this school year. The annual childhood literacy campaign is led by the Scripps Howard Foundation and supported by employees of The E.W. Scripps Company, members of the Scripps family and communities where Scripps does business in more than 40 markets across the country. This fall, the campaign raised $840,657, equating to 168,131 books.

UK marketing agency Kids announced the launch of its national “Feed their hungry minds” multichannel advertising campaign for Amazon Kids+. The agency created the campaign to drive awareness of the all-you-can eat service for kids that provides unlimited access to child-friendly books, movies, TV shows, apps and games.
One Animation has secured new deals for its CG-animated series Oddbods, and comedy adventure series Insectibles. In the US, Peacock will debut 20 half-hour compilations of the short-form version of Oddbods and season one of Insectibles. Ketchup TV has acquired VOD rights to season one of Oddbods and themed compilations for the US, UK and Australia. For the UK, Discovery has picked up season two of Oddbods short-form series and renewed its deal for short-form season one for Discovery’s VOD services. For Latin America, WarnerMedia has taken SVOD rights for HBOMax for season three of Oddbods for Cartoon Network and Boomerang.
