10/18/18: Alvarez gets new title

Good morning. It’s Thursday October 18, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Canelo Alvarez locked in a $365 million agreement with DAZN that will see an 11-fight run that his promotional company says is the richest athlete contract in sports history. The deal begins with his next bout, which will see him move up in weight to take on WBA super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding on Dec. 15 at Madison Square Garden. The deal now means that the platform is able to showcase what may be the two biggest figures in boxing in Alvarez and heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
“We have No. 1 and No. 2. They’re the two most important fighters in the world,” DAZN executive chairman John Skipper said. “Canelo fighting on DAZN, we believe that that will help us attract some of the other fighters, some of the other premier fighters.”

TBS’ coverage of ALCS Game 3 ranked as the top program of the day across all of cable TV, notching a 3.7 overnight Nielsen rating. The 2018 MLB Postseason across Turner’s TV Everywhere platforms is up 52% in live streaming minutes vs. last year. Game 3 saw Boston rank as the top market, with a 19.9 local rating.
CBS announced that its post-Super Bowl slot will go to The World’s Best, the new talent competition series featuring elite acts from around the world with James Corden as host and judges Drew Barrymore, RuPaul Charles and Faith Hill. The episode is expected to air around 10p on Feb. 3, 2019.

The Canadian Premier League unveiled plans for its first draft, as Canadian University soccer players have an opportunity to earn a spot on a CPL. The CPL-U SPORTS draft comes courtesy of a partnership between the CPL and U SPORTS to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to be signed to a CPL-U SPORTS Developmental Contract. This will allow an athlete with one to four years of eligibility remaining to play with a CPL club, while preserving their eligibility, in the spring and summer before returning to U SPORTS competition. A player draft will take place on Nov. 12 following the 2018 U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at UBC in Vancouver.
Professional Bull Riders and Active Interest Media, which produces consumer and trade events, websites, magazines, and films/TV shows, announced a partnership in which PBR will represent TV and digital media rights for two AIM championship series in western sports along with a new original program in development. PBR will represent the TV and digital rights for AIM’s Equine Group, including the World Series of Team Roping (WSTR), United States Team Roping Championship (USTRC), and American Cowboy TV, a new original series slated to debut in 2019.
