Formula 1 has eyes for Miami to host its first-ever Grand Prix after reaching an agreement in principle to host a race at Hard Rock Stadium beginning in 2021. The proposed Formula One Miami Grand Prix would see F1 cars navigating a custom-built track around the stadium giving F1 its second race in the United States, joining the US Grand Prix at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas. Should the race be given the green light in a vote by the Miami-Dade County on October 28, it would see Formula 1 return to the state of Florida for the first time since the 1959 United Stated Grand Prix at Sebring.
Foul weather in the New York City area forced the postponement of Game 4 of the ALCS between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees, with FS1, FS2, FOX Deportes and BTN slating changes to accommodate the switch. Game 4 of the ALCS will be played tonight at 8p, forcing Game 5 of the series to Friday at 7p with all ALCS contests are televised on FS1. The college football game between No. 4 Ohio State and Northwestern, scheduled for Friday on FS1, is now televised exclusively on BTN at 8:30p. Programming originally scheduled Friday evening on BTN, No. 6 Indiana at No. 25 Maryland men’s soccer (6:30p) and No. 17 Illinois at No. 6 Wisconsin women’s volleyball (9:00p) now moves to FS2.
The NFL Players Association and NFL Media agreed to a multi-year deal to carry the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl live on NFL Network. Under this new partnership, the NFLPA’s all-star college showcase will air exclusively on the network through 2024. The ninth annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl is scheduled for a 4p kickoff on January 18, 2020 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California.
As we gear up for the NBA season to tip off next week, networks firmed up programming plans for the new season. ESPN’s morning debate show First Take will run live from ESPN’s Los Angeles Production Center from October 21-25 as the 2019-20 NBA regular season begins. The show will have the latest insight on the marquee matchups including Tuesday’s showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers with Tuesday’s edition of First Take set to include a live studio audience made up of fans of both teams in anticipation of that night’s battle for Los Angeles at the Staples Center.
On TNT, Turner Sports announced that the Inside the NBA Presented by Kia studio team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson will be on the road in Los Angeles on Tuesday and San Francisco on Thursday for Autotrader Premiere Week. Tuesday night’s studio coverage – starting at 5:30p – will be live from the NBA on TNT American Express Road Show in Los Angeles in an expanded, 2.5-hour pregame show that will feature special guests, the Toronto Raptors’ ring ceremony and live looks from Toronto’s Jurassic Park, Two nights later, Inside the NBA Presented by Kia will be live from Chase Center in San Francisco throughout Thursday night’s coverage.
Finally, NBA TV cemented a range of new original programing for the 2019-20 NBA season. In addition to the network’s signature NBA GameTime, the new and expanded original programming lineup will include: The Warmup presented by Ford; NBA CrunchTime; #Handles on NBA TV; The List and Say What?. Meanwhile, monthly programming will also include Winer’s monthly 30-minute magazine-style show, Beyond the Paint, Shaqtin’ A Fool – which recaps the NBA’s funniest on-court moments – and High Tops: Plays of the Month hosted by Parrish.
In ratings news, Monday’s rain-impacted NASCAR Cup Series race on NBCSN scored as the network’s top Cup Series Monday race ever, averaging 1.536 million viewers, and pulling the most-streamed NASCAR Cup Series race on record, up 114% in uniques with 150,000, up 74% in minutes at 8.9 million and up 64% in average minute audience at 32,000. For the season, NBC is up 2% over 2018 numbers, averaging a TAD of 2.484 million viewers across 13 races, excluding this year’s rain-impacted Daytona and Talladega races.
Combate Americas reports that its Oct. 11 telecast, with its viewership across Univision and TUDN, generated a total of 411,000 total viewers on Univision. “Combate Americas was, by far and away, numero uno this weekend,” said Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren, “and this time we had three general market competitors airing in English, including two in primetime.”
On the local front, NBC Sports Chicago announced Chicago sports media personality/NBA expert JASON GOFF will be joining the network as host of Bulls Pregame Live/Bulls Postgame Live beginning this season. Goff’s first official game night appearance on NBC Sports Chicago takes place on Oct. 23. Goff will also make additional appearances throughout the season on a variety of NBC Sports Chicago’s programs and cross-platform portals, including SportsTalk Live and the network’s “Bulls Talk” podcast.
Pac-12 Networks mapped out plans for its 2019-20 winter broadcast slate, anchored by women’s gymnastics with live broadcasts of more than 20 meets, including the 2020 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships. Rounding out Pac-12 Networks’ winter broadcast schedule includes live coverage of eight men’s volleyball matches, six wrestling matches, an Arizona State hockey game, one men’s gymnastics meet and extensive coverage of Pac-12 rugby, including both days of the PAC Rugby 7s tournament. Live coverage of championship events also continues this season for women’s swimming and diving, men’s swimming and diving and wrestling. MSG Networks announced the return of its weeknight talk show, now titled the MSG 150 Final, which first aired this past summer. The new, 30-minute edition will air live following Knicks postgame shows on weeknights during the season with the first ep running at 11:30p on Oct. 23.
Showtime Sports launched a new video podcast, All The Smoke With Matt Barnes And Stephen Jackson, a weekly series the will deliver “authentic, unfiltered perspective on the most polarizing topics in and around the game of basketball, including culture, social justice, politics, music and more.” The show premiers on Monday with new episodes released every Thursday in video and audio formats on the new SHOWTIME Basketball YouTube channel and on major podcast platforms.
