Tony Stewart is bringing his brand to the NHRA, announcing that his team Tony Stewart Racing will field two fulltime entries – one in Top Fuel for nine-time event winner Leah Pruett and one in Funny Car for 39-time event winner Matt Hagan. The manufacturer and the team’s technical alliance associate, along with corporate partners, will be announced at a later date. “When I retired from fulltime driving I said it wasn’t the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. This is proof of that,” said Stewart. “I appreciate all forms of racing and I’ve always been intrigued about drag racing and NHRA, in particular. Back in 2009 when Tony Schumacher and I were both representing the U.S. Army, I got to hang out with him and Don Schumacher at the U.S. Nationals. Tony ended up winning and after taking it all in, I was hooked. But it wasn’t until I met Leah and started going to races regularly, where I saw the strategy and the preparation firsthand, that I truly understood it.”

PROGRAMMING

TNT’s saw the network’s first-ever NHL regular season telecast, pitting the Rangers and Caps rank the most-watched game to ever air on the second night of nationally televised NHL coverage, with the telecast delivering an average of 817,000 total viewers, up 139% vs. the comparable game window in 2020 and an increase of 210% over the primetime game televised on the second night of NHL coverage in 2019. The second game of the doubleheader between the Blackhawks and Avalanche averaged 522,000 total viewers, up 284% vs. the same telecast window on the second day of NHL coverage in 2020-21.

A day earlier, ESPN generated record numbers for its NHL FaceOff doubleheader. Combined, the NHL Faceoff doubleheader on ESPN averaged 884,000 viewers on the network over the more than five-hour window, which is up 54% over the 2019-20 season-opening doubleheader and up 19% over the 2020-21 season-opening tripleheader. The Penguins/Lightning game generated an average audience of 984,000 viewers, while the Kraken/Golden Knights matchup generated an average audience of 782,000 viewers to mark the most viewed late-window opening night game on record and the second-most viewed regular season NHL game to start after 9p. p

Speaking of ESPN, The Walt Disney Company and the NFL locked in a five-year rights agreement for ESPN to present the Monday night Wild Card game beginning with the 2021 season and continuing through the 2025 season. The inaugural Monday night NFL Wild Card game will be played on January 17, 2022, to serve as the grand finale of the NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend and the first scheduled weekday prime time NFL Playoff game. ESPN’s MegaCast production will provide fans multiple ways to watch. ABC and ESPN will air the traditional telecast with Steve Levy, Brian Griese, Louis Riddick, Lisa Salters and John Parry on the call. On ESPN2 and ESPN+, Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli will be available and ESPN Deportes will air the Spanish-language telecast.

ESPN also revealed the times, dates and networks, along with matchups for this year’s 2021 Men’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The action begins with a pair of games on ESPN2 on Nov. 29 that will include Iowa/Virginia at 7p and Notre Dame/Illinois at 9p.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 schedule was revealed, with the org plotting a slate that will include 10 men’s and seven women’s rounds across a span of six months beginning with a pair of combined men’s and women’s events in Dubai, as well as three new hosts in Malaga and Seville in Spain, and Toulouse in France. The Emirates Dubai Sevens will host a behind closed doors round on Nov. 26-27, followed by a second event on 3-4 December with fans in attendance at The Sevens Stadium.

MSG Networks announced that former Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist will join the MSG Networks broadcast team this season as a studio analyst for select New York Rangers telecasts. Lundqvist will join his former teammate and Rangers analyst Steve Valiquette and host John Giannone in studio for pregame, intermission and postgame coverage on MSG Networks.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is departing ESPN in 2022 and will move to ION and Bounce, available free and over-the-air to viewers as well as on cable and streaming. Scripps Networks will announce full broadcast schedules and streaming plans in early 2022.

ROOT SPORTS reached carriage agreements with TV providers to deliver Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Kraken games to approximately 80% of all ROOT SPORTS subscribers in Washington, Oregon and Alaska (and the Idaho portion of the Spokane DMA for Seattle Kraken) with other carriage discussions still ongoing. ”We’re excited that ROOT SPORTS and the Trail Blazers will be reaching more households with this increased distribution in Oregon, Washington and Alaska,” said Chris McGowan, President and CEO of the Trail Blazers and Rose Quarter. “We’re proud to be sharing a network with the Kraken, Mariners and other Pacific Northwest teams as we head into the 2021-22 NBA season.”

The NFL is reportedly prepping to spinoff sponsorship rights to the Super Bowl halftime show with the league’s sponsorship deal with Pepsi set to expire after the 2022 game, according to CNBC, with plans to take future sponsorship rights to the open market. The value of the halftime show could range from $25 million to $50 million, according to the report.

LegalZoom.com and the NBA announced a new multiyear partnership, which will tip off with the creation of “Fast Break for Small Business,” a community initiative that will award $6 million in grants and LegalZoom services to support thousands of small businesses throughout the country. “Our partnership with LegalZoom is a significant extension of our commitment to increasing economic opportunities for historically marginalized communities,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “Together we will bring meaningful resources to entrepreneurs and directly address many of the challenges facing minority-owned small businesses.”

The Presidents Cup named Genesis as the Official Automobile Sponsor of the 2022, 2024 and 2026 events, slate to run out of Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina; The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Québec, Canada; and Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, respectively. Genesis will provide tournament vehicles for the teams, staff and volunteers, with display vehicles being placed throughout the host property.

DraftKings agreed to a deal with the NHL to become an Official Sports Betting, Daily Fantasy Sports and iGaming Partner of the league in the United States. To complement the deal, DraftKings has also reached an agreement with Turner Sports, including Bleacher Report, to be the exclusive sportsbook and daily fantasy sports provider for their coverage of the league. As an Official Sports Betting, Daily Fantasy Sports and iGaming Partner of the NHL, DraftKings will be granted access to NHL assets including the use of official marks and logos, as well as themed sweepstakes and enhanced promotional efforts both during the regular season, NHL All-Star Weekend and throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final. DraftKings will also have the opportunity for a variety of content integrations across the league’s digital and linear media platforms.

Collectable and IMG announced a partnership with Lelands Auctions to create The MINT25 Auction, running online from Jan. 10-29 with extended bidding taking place over the phone and in person at The MINT Collective presented by eBay, a sports collectibles event coming to Las Vegas, January 28-30, 2022. The auction will be limited to 25 lots with a minimum expected appraised value of $250,000 per lot. The MINT Collective will take place at UFC APEX and MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

SeatGeek is merging with RedBall Acquisition Corp at a valuation of roughly $1.35 billion. The deal includes a $100 million investment from Kevin Durant’s Thirty Five Ventures, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, among others.

Speaking of Kevin Durant, the athlete is teaming up with Dapper Labs, the company behind NBA Top Shot, and the Flow blockchain to get into the NFT space. The deal also includes a creative development role for Durant and Thirty Five Ventures that will see Durant curate and create NBA Top Shot Moments, video content, and more.

EA has extended its exclusive agreement with Lenovo for the Apex Legends Global Series, as the new season prepares to take off this weekend with competition from over 80 markets for a total prize pool of $5 million. “The popularity of esports is skyrocketing and striving to be increasingly inclusive with more players forming teams – growing its worldwide fanbase to over 474 million total viewers on the edge of their seats. With all eyes on this competitive industry, it’s now a lasting cultural phenomenon without borders,” said Emily Ketchen, CMO and Vice President of Intelligent Devices Group, Lenovo. “The future of global esports will be powered by increasingly sophisticated, more immersive gaming devices like our premium Lenovo Legion lineup that can successfully accelerate a gamer’s honed skills and help them win. Riot fleshed out plans for the previously-announced European Regional League, announcing that 2022 will see of five accredited regional leagues in: Superliga (Spain), the LFL (France), the NLC (Nordics, UK and Ireland), Ultraliga (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia), and the Prime League (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland). Every accredited ERL will feature two divisions of 10 teams, with a double round-robin, best-of-one regular season.

The Seattle Seahawks announced the launch of gaming community – Seahawks Sandbox, which will feature a regular rotation of weekly tournaments and content for the 12s, produced with gaming platform provider Rival. The Seahawks Sandbox platform will host 50 different tournaments throughout the season on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC. The community will feature 14 different popular sports, racing, battle royale, and fighting game titles.

Complexity Gaming announced three hires to bolster the organization’s expansion efforts. Hires include Bee Yancey as Director of Partnerships; Michael Zervos as Director of Video Content; and John Williams as Art Director.
