X has dropped Unilever from its lawsuit, filed in August, against the World Federation of Advertisers and federation members. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants had conspired to withhold billions of ad dollars from Twitter/X after Elon Musk acquired it, to force the platform to maintain certain safety standards. In a statement, Unilever said X had committed to ensuring the “safety and performance” of its brands on the platform. “Today’s news is the first part of the ecosystem-wide solution and we look forward to more resolution across the industry,” posted X.
TikTok’s own research shows that the app is harmful to the mental health of teenagers, according to Kentucky Public Radio, which was able to access some redacted material in a lawsuit filed by over a dozen US attorneys general. The text underneath the digital redaction appears to quote and summarize findings from internal TikTok documents and communications in which TikTok employees seem to acknowledge that their goal with safeguards like screen time nudges were meant to have limited effect on actual screen time. Kentucky joined the lawsuit last week, with AG Russell Coleman stating, “TikTok was specifically designed to be an addiction machine, targeting children who are still in the process of developing appropriate self-control. It doesn’t take much for our kids to fall headfirst into a digital world of unrealistic beauty standards, bullying and low self-esteem.”

Gamers are fully engaged, leaving little time for anything else including streaming video, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s annual “Gaming 360” report. Young consumers consider gaming a big part of their daily lives – 91% of those age 16-24 play mobile, console or PC video games, with 53% playing on a game console every day and 35% playing on a console multiple times per day. Young gamers estimate they spend 35% of their total “screen time” playing games, and just 19% watching TV shows or movies. “These results illustrate why it’s so critical for media companies to adapt to the tastes of a new generation of consumers,” said Jon Giegengack, Principal at Hub. “There are ways for video platforms to lean into this change; Disney’s investment in Epic Games and Netflix’s growing gaming capabilities are good examples. According to Advertiser Perceptions latest study, US advertisers that implement data strategies results in an average ROI increase of 35%. The research, commissioned by Claravine, shows that 79% of US advertisers agree that it is getting more difficult to show the ROI/ROAS on ad/marketing campaigns as they work with more platforms and have fewer signals to work with; two in five US advertisers already use generative AI for ad creative, and one in two are considering it. About 26% of advertisers are very confident in their ability to properly tag and track all their AI-generated assets.
