IN THE NEWS

Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith has stepped down from his role as Chief News Anchor and Managing Editor of the network’s breaking news unit, and anchor of Shepard Smith Reporting. Friday afternoon’s edition was Smith’s final show, during which he addressed his surprise decision. “Recently, I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News. After requesting that I stay, they obliged. So under our agreement, I won’t be reporting elsewhere, at least in the near future,” said Smith, who has been with FNC since its founding in 1996, but has found himself clashing with the news net’s opinion hosts over his skepticism about President Trump. “Even in our currently polarized nation, it’s my hope that the facts will win the day. That the truth will always matter. That journalism and journalists will thrive.”

Viewers weren’t the only ones taken by surprise by the abrupt announcement. “I’m a little stunned and a little heartbroken,” said Neil Cavuto on air Friday. In an internal memo, Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and President Jay Wallace told staffers, “We know this was an extremely difficult decision for him and he made it with much deliberation, care and consideration. While this day is especially challenging for both of us who have worked alongside him for 23 years, we respect his decision and are deeply grateful for his immense contributions to the entire network.” A series of rotating anchors will host Smith’s former time slot until a new program is announced.

Presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren made intentionally false statements in Facebook ads, to draw attention to the social media giant’s policy of exempting ads by politicians from fact-checking. “Breaking news: Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook just endorsed Donald Trump for re-election,” said one ad. “You’re probably shocked, and you might be thinking, ‘how could this possibly be true?’ Well, it’s not.” Warren explained the move in a series of tweets on Saturday. “Facebook changed their ads policy to allow politicians to run ads with known lies – explicitly turning the platform into a disinformation-for-profit machine,” she wrote. “This week, we decided to see just how far it goes…We intentionally made a Facebook ad with false claims and submitted it to Facebook’s ad platform to see if it’d be approved. It got approved quickly.” Responded a Facebook spokesman: “If Senator Warren wants to say things she knows to be untrue, we believe Facebook should not be in the position of censoring that speech.”

The NBA announced Friday they would not hold media availability for its teams for the remainder of its preseason trip in China. “They have been placed into a complicated and unprecedented situation while abroad and we believe it would be unfair to ask them to address these matters in real time,” the NBA told EPSN. Repercussions from a Twitter post by Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morley in support of Hong Kong protesters included canceled games and the sponsorships being put on hold.

Kerry Washington has accepted an invite to Netflix’s The Prom. The Scandal star joins Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Andrew Rannels (The Book of Mormon) in the Ryan Murphy movie musical.

James Murdoch acquired a small stake in Vice Media as part of Vice’s recent acquisition of Refinery29, reports the NY Times. Murdoch, the former chief exec of 21st Century Fox, joined the board of Vice in 2013 as part of an investment Fox made in the company.

Sets and props from Madam Secretary are being donated to the United States Diplomacy Center. “Over the past five seasons, Madam Secretary has brought to life the important and tireless work of dedicated American diplomats who represent our nation around the world and in Washington, DC.,” said Mary Kane, Director of the U.S. Diplomacy Center. “These items will become a focal point of our popular culture exhibit, giving us a compelling and dynamic way to engage our audience who may have been introduced to the work and language of diplomacy through this television show.” CBS drama is in its sixth and final season, Sundays at 10p.

Good news (pun intended) – the entries are still open for the Cynopsis Best Of The Best Awards, which includes categories that honor social good media campaigns, content and partnerships! Submit by Wednesday, October 23rd for the chance to be recognized among your industry peers.

Chance the Rapper will do double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live on October 26. He hosted the NBC sketch comedy show in 2017.
