MLS has its first round contests locked and loaded for the MLS Cup Playoffs with the action set to kick in on Oct. 19 and six games in total set to take place over that weekend amid all-new format for the league, anchored by top seeds New York City FC in the Eastern Conference and Los Angeles FC on the Western Conference. Play begins with Toronto FC/DC United at noon on Univision/TUDN, with the Atlanta United/New England Revolution at 3p. FS1/FOX Deportes then serves up the Seattle Sounders/FC Dallas at 3:30p, while Real Salt Lake/Portland Timbers kicks off at 10p on (ESPNews/ESPN Deportes. Oct. 20 features Philadelphia Union/New York Red Bulls at 3p on FS1/FOX Deportes while Minnesota United/Los Angeles Galaxy compete at 8:30p on ESPN/ESPN Deportes.
 
PROGRAMMING

For the first time ever in golf, every shot by every player will be live-streamed from a full-field tournament when THE PLAYERS Championship returns to TPC Sawgrass from March 12-15. Fans will be able to follow any player in the elite field through all four rounds with coverage available to PGA TOUR LIVE subscribers on either NBC Sports Gold or Amazon Prime Video Channels. PGA TOUR Entertainment and NBC Sports Group will showcase more than 32,000 shots over 72 holes from a starting field of 144 – live – by utilizing nearly 120 cameras positioned throughout THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, with each group having its own dedicated stream. In addition, the PGA TOUR will be launching an all-new TOURCast product that will allow fans to follow every shot from each group with a 3D rendering of the golf course and shot trails. 
 
In ratings news, FOX Sports is touting that America’s Game of the Week took home top numbers for the NFL’s weekend action, as the Packers win over the Cowboys drew a 14.9/30 in metered market numbers (up 5% over last year). The regional game, meanwhile averages a 10.6/25, up 15%. FOX NFl Sunday, meanwhile, notched a 3.6/11, up 9%.
 
Meanwhile, the Colts’ 19-13 victory over the Chiefs on NBC’s Sunday Night Football notched a Total Audience Delivery of 18.6 Million Viewers to guide NBC to another primetime win. Through Week 5, NBC’s SNF package is  averaging a Total Audience Delivery of 21.0 million viewers, the best since 2016 and up 5% over last season.
 
ESPN and Quibi cemented an agreement for daily sports programming on the mobile platform when it launches in April 2020. As part of the new deal, ESPN will be the exclusive US multi-sport content provider for Quibi’s curated news and information programming, Daily Essentials. The new ESPN show, available only on Quibi, will feature daily episodes and breaking news covering the biggest stories in sports.
 
The Pac-12 announced a new deal that will keep the conference’s end-of-season basketball tournaments for both men’s and women’s basketball in Las Vegas through 2022. The men’s event will remain at T-Mobile Arena, while the women’s tournament will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, For each of the next three seasons, including the 2019-20 campaign, the women’s tournament will continue to be held the week prior to the men’s tournament, creating a true festival of Pac-12 basketball in the city.
 
Al Roker Entertainment signed on to produce the nationally-televised Musial Awards as the event’s 2019 broadcast production partner. The National Sportsmanship Foundation, which oversees the Musial Awards agreed to let ARE package the Musial Awards into a one-hour television special that will air on CBS on Dec. 21 at 2p. The telecast will also run at least twice on cable’s CBS Sports Network. The Musial Awards live show, meanwhile, takes place on Nov. 23 at Stifel Theatre in St. Louis.
 
Today sees sports talk personality JT The Brick launch a new show on SiriusXM via the Mad Dog Sports Radio channel. The show, Brick at Night with JT The Brick, will run five nights a week (Sundays 11p-2a and Mondays through Thursdays 11p-3a) out of Las Vegas. “JT is a super talented sports radio personality with the unique voice and strong and informed takes that sports fans love,” said Steve Cohen, SiriusXM’s SVP of Sports Programming. “We’re very excited to expand his role on Mad Dog Sports Radio and give our listeners great sports talk late into the night coast to coast.”

GoDaddy signed on as a partner for the Toronto Raptors and will launch a new marketing campaign that celebrates the team’s 25th anniversary with Muggsy Bogues, as he launches his fun new storybook, ‘A Raptor Tale’. The Columbus Blue Jackets announced a new multiyear partnership with Horizon, an Ohio-based fiber broadband company. The agreement designates Horizon as the Official Communications Provider of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The partnership also calls for Horizon to be the presenting partner of the in-arena WiFi that enables fans to access their favorite content during games and events in addition to having presenting rights to the club’s official website, BlueJackets.com, and sponsorship of the Blue Jackets Foundation’s fundraising gala, CannonBall. 
 
DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

The NFL and OverTier, a Bruin Sports Capital company, announced an expansion of their partnership for OverTier to operate NFL Game Pass, the league’s premium subscription OTT service. Since 2017, OverTier held the rights to operate NFL Game Pass in Europe but the new agreement now brings the service to a combined 181 countries and territories worldwide including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, and South Korea. “We are excited to expand our partnership with OverTier to bring the NFL directly to fans around the world on their favorite viewing platforms with NFL Game Pass,” said Chris Halpin, NFL Chief Strategy & Growth Officer. “OverTier has a proven track record of innovation in Europe, and we look forward to unlocking significant potential across other markets.”
 
Meanwhile, the XFL locked in its player draft to take place on Oct. 15-16 with player selections announced on XFL.com, @xfl2020 on Twitter, @xfl on Instagram, and through the social media channels of the eight XFL teams. Over the two-day draft, each XFL team will populate a 71-man roster by selecting players from a set of positional groupings. One quarterback will be assigned to each team prior to a five-phased draft, phased with 1) Skill players 2) offensive line 3) defensive front seven 4) defensive backfield and 5) an open draft of all positions. The draft pool will include approximately 1,000 professional football players, all of whom accepted a Commissioner’s Invitation and passed a standard background check.

ESPORTS

Gaming and esports lifestyle tour Player Omega locked in a partnership with Super League Gaming to provide esports players, fans and local organizers with monthly events in each market where Player Omega debuts in 2020. Super League also will be participating in Player Omega’s inaugural event on November 9-10 in Pomona, CA. At the November event, Super League will host one of the participatory zones, offering programming for Fortnite, League of Legends and Minecraft players. For 2020, Player Omega has confirmed stops in Minneapolis, Niagara Falls, NY, Norwich, CT, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia, with tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks. Super League will recreate its Player Omega experience on a recurring basis in each market.
 
Complexity Gaming formed an alliance with Extra Life, the gaming-focused peer-to-peer fundraising program of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Through live streams, local hospital visits and more, this partnership allows for Complexity players and streamers to lend support toward fundraising efforts for CMN Hospitals across North America. On Nov. 2, a variety of Complexity’s players and streamers will participate in a celebration around Extra Life to help raise donations and awareness for the charitable needs of children’s hospitals and will also regularly visit and tour their local CMN Hospital.
 
Following a deal to partner with Reuters Connect, Esportz Entertainment Corp. announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art broadcast studio in Orange County, California with completion targeting the end of the first quarter of 2020. The company plans to produce live and pre-recorded content, streamed through the most popular esports online channels daily, including YouTube, Twitch, Mixer and others.

Former Viceland International executive James Rosenstock is being tapped to serve as Executive Vice President, International for WWE. He will be charged with management of all international operations at the wrestling group and growing WWE’s brand and business outside of the US.
 
FloSports announced that Marc Ruskin, Founder of Hockey TV and former President of HockeyTech has joined FloSports as an Advisor with a focus on FloHockey. There, he will “help drive growth and strategic development by ensuring that governing bodies, conferences, leagues, and teams capitalize on FloSports’ unique ability to showcase organizations and athletes through rich storytelling alongside live and on-demand content.”
 
The US Anti-Doping Agency is partnering with NBC Sports’ SportsEngine to recognize great coaches with any youth sport coach of athletes aged 5-18 (high school, middle school or club coaches) eligible to enter. According to the agency, “Nominees should demonstrate TrueSport coaching values to include a focus on sportsmanship, character-building and life skills, and clean and healthy performance.  Contest nominees should place the utmost emphasis on building healthy young athletes and winning the right way in stark contrast to the “win-at-all-costs” culture that undermines many young athletes’ experience in sport.”
