IN THE NEWS

X Corp. ad revenue slid -54% year-over-year in August, the most decline of any social platform in its competitive set, according to Guideline. TikTok led the pack, with ad revenue up +72%. The only platform other than X to see ad revenue dip was Snap, down -4%.

Brighter news at Disney Advertising, which has secured nearly 50 brand sponsors for this year’s Halloween and holiday seasons. To name a few: In its inaugural year as a sponsor, Hershey’s has signed on for a two-year deal that will feature its brand spots across Hulu’s Huluween and Freeform’s “31 Nights of Halloween”; Kohl’s is onboard for its ninth year of Freeform’s “25 Days of Christmas”; and Ford Truck will center its second year of sponsorship around Hulu’s holiday campaign. “Whether they’re watching ‘Hocus Pocus’ on Freeform or ‘Happiest Season’ on Hulu, Disney Advertising creates unique, engaging experiences that enable brands to authentically connect with our fans,” said John Campbell, SVP, Client Partnerships, Disney Advertising.

How happy are viewers with their streaming services? Max leads the industry in terms of customer satisfaction among all SVODs, but fell -6 points to 88% from 94% in 2022, according to Whip Media’s annual Streaming Satisfaction Report. Hulu came in at #2 and Disney+ at #3 in the ranking. Other findings include:
· Apple TV+ is ranked #4 in overall satisfaction among subscribers, increasing +5 points from last year to 81%.
· Peacock showed the largest gain in overall satisfaction, increasing +6 points to 74%, bolstered by the subscriber’s strong reception to the quality of its original content. Peacock still holds the lowest-ranked position in overall satisfaction, tied with Prime Video.
· Netflix, which ranked second overall in 2021, dropped to fourth place in 2022, and is ranking sixth in 2023.

Over $2.8 billion was invested to advertise automotive models through national digital, print, and TV outlets through August of 2023, a 10% year-over-year decrease from the over $3 billion spent last year during the same time, according to a study from MediaRadar. “The Big 3 have different advertising strategies, it will be interesting how automakers will approach the rest of this year, especially in light of ongoing challenges,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO MediaRadar. “Given the strike is a more pressing concern, allocating resources to advertising may not remain as high of a priority moving forward.”

WPP unveiled a partnership with commerce company Shopify to jointly develop products with shared insights, and pair WPP’s network of over 13,500 commerce experts with Shopify’s platform to help brands scale faster. Shopify will collaborate with WPP on product development in order to build targeted solutions across sectors including consumer packaged goods, health and wellness, and fashion.

The distribution of Paramount’s 2004 teen comedy “Mean Girls” on TikTok, in 23 individual videos, drew criticism from “It Follows” producer Rebecca Green, who tweeted, “As the WGA strike comes to a close, studios find another way not to pay us for our work (and if you think people won’t watch the film this way, you’re obvs not on TikTok.)” The movie was posted on October 3, in celebration of Mean Girls Day. Paramount’s musical movie version of “Mean Girls,” based on the Broadway adaptation, is set for theatrical release on January 12.

The new CBS News team of 2024 campaign reporters includes Nidia Cavazos, Shawna Mizelle, Allison Novelo, Olivia Rinaldi, Jake Rosen and Taurean Small. In expanded roles are Camilo Montoya-Galvez, Aaron Navarro, Zak Hudak and Cristina Corujo, who will focus on covering the campaign through the eyes of voters. The network’s political coverage also will include, for the first time, Spanish-language reports.

Lifetime’s annual Stop Breast Cancer for Life campaign features new PSAs with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Keshia Knight Pulliam (“Married at First Sight: Afterparty”) and Rachel Lindsay (“The Bachelorette”). The campaign emphasizes that screenings should not be based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Bye, Carly: Paramount+ has canceled its revival of “iCarly” after three seasons. “The series had a great three-season run and delivered on what fans really wanted to see with Carly and Freddie finally getting together,” said a Paramount+ spokesperson. The original ran from 2007-2012.
