IN THE NEWS
One episode in, CBS gave a full season order to Young Sheldon. Monday’s premiere of the Big Bang Theory spin-off averaged 17.21 million viewers and 3.8 among A18-49, making it the most-watched comedy launch on any network since 2011, and the highest-rated new comedy since 2013. Also promising: The show retained 98% of its Big Bang viewer lead-in and 93% of A18-49.
Good news on the diversity front: A new DGA report found that more than twice as many first-time minority directors and almost double the number of first-time female directors were hired this season versus last for TV series under DGA contracts. Of the 225 first-time directors in the 2016-2017 season, 56 were ethnic minorities, up from 24 last season, and 73 were women, up from 38. “The move toward inclusion – after years of glacial progress – suggests that qualified people who have previously been overlooked because of their race or gender are beginning to get recognition,” said the DGA.
Not surprisingly, 77.5% of respondents in TiVo’s 2Q17 State of Pay-TV report only want to pay for channels they watch. But they’re willing to pony up more than they were before – the average price a U.S. viewer would pay for 20 channels was $29.97, an increase of 5.9% q/q. The channels respondents were willing to fork over the most to watch? HBO ($2.58), Tennis Channel ($2.45), Fusion ($2.38), Telemundo ($2.31) and Showtime ($2.21).
Underground executive producer John Legend hopes to keep the acclaimed series about the Underground Railroad, canceled by WGN America in May, alive for season 3. “The cast, producers and our studio Sony Pictures remain committed to a future for Underground because of a belief that this story is important and invaluable… and it remains our hope that not only is there a future for this show, but for many others like it,” wrote Legend in an op-ed piece he released yesterday. Despite solid ratings, Underground was a casualty (along with Outsiders) of the network’s move away from high-cost programming in the wake of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s agreement to buy WGNA parent company, Tribune Media.
If fans were taken aback by the announcement by Chip and Joanna Gaines that season 5 of HGTV hit Fixer Upper will be their last, the couple has the support of the network that made them stars. “It takes a huge amount of time and creative energy to make a phenomenal series like Fixer Upper,” said HGTV. “We understand their decision to spend more time with their family. Like all of their fans, we want only the best for them and they know they will always have a home at HGTV.”
Will & Grace was just the beginning. Hulu, which inked a streaming agreement last week for the red-hot NBC revival, followed up with an NBCUniversal agreement that will make Hulu the exclusive SVOD home to every episode of 30 Rock, starting October 1, as well as Parenthood in early 2018, Paul Reiser‘s upcoming There’s Johnny, the first 13 seasons of UK reality series Made in Chelsea and the first 10 seasons of Syfy‘s Face Off. Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, is a co-owner of Hulu.
Walt Disney Studios signed on as the premiere studio partner for National CineMedia’s movie theater pre-show Noovie, launching tomorrow. Also promoting shows on the big screen in October are Amazon (Lost in Oz), Hulu (Future Man), USA (Mr. Robot) and Showtime (White Famous).

ADVERTISING
Only 33% of ad executives said they consider their audience insights completely trustworthy, according to Advertiser Perceptions’ “The State of Advertising Measurement Report, and the number dips to 29% for audience analytics/measurement. The majority of respondents, about half, fell in the “somewhat trustworthy” pool. The study surveyed 197 advertising and agency decision-makers.
Trust was also an issue in a report, “Brand Protection From Digital Content Infection: Safeguarding Brand Reputation Through Diligent Ad Channel Selection,” from the Chief Marketing Officer Council and Dow Jones. The study found 63% of consumers respond more positively to ads in established and trusted media environments. To improve trust, 48% of marketers said they planned to develop digital advertising guidelines for their agency and ad buying networks.

Gizmodo Media has launched Earther, a web site reporting on stories about climate, environmental justice and extinction.
